Echolalia = repeating the same word or phrases they've heard Palilalia = repeating it over and over Scripting = a form of echolalia, usually done by movies, social settings, or shows I hope this clarifies!
Thank you. So incredibly helpful. We go in for full assessment in 2 weeks, and I definitely overcount some of her "words" because it isn't explained this clearly.
ALOT of parents do and not only does it make it inaccurate but it also leaves parents confused when the professionals score them lower on communication!
My girls always been a talker and for years everyone wrote off her issues and signs because of how verbal she was. Same with her “imaginative play” she loves role play but she is actually re-enacting storylines from the shows she’s watched. She is very very verbal but she can’t answer simple questions like what she wants to eat , what she’s done at school etc , she can’t hold a 2 way conversation either. She’ll talk and talk and talk at you but her replies had nothing to do with what the other person had said to her
I am very happy that you are finding pleasure on creating good quality content again and keep going on educating us. Your Chanel has helped me a lot for more than a year.
Thanks for sharing and explaining this so well. My son 2.8 years old does echolalia with many words he hears everyday. But the only functional words he consistantly says are 'milk' when he wants milk. 'Up' when he wants me to lift him up and he raises his arms up too. 'Car' when he wants to go inside my car and stands besides it. 'Flower' when he sees any flowers. And 'yum' when he's hungry, Also 'mama' to me. He used to say 'apple' when he would want to eat apple. But no longer says that now. I guess maybr because he doesnt like to eat it much now lol x
It's funny the words kids lose and gain according to their interests. Liam use to say "na-na" for banana but now he doesn't like bananas so it's no longer in his vocabulary no matter what we try LOL
My son will be 3 next month. He sings songs all day, especially brown Bear brown bear. He doesn't say things himself unless we say it. Example: I'll say "I love you joshua" and he will say, "I love you joshua" back to me. I got the go ahead from his doctor a month ago to get him evaluated for autism, she mentioned his no eye contact and I remember her joking before that he had already developed selective hearing because he wasn't responding to his name. I know nothing about autism. But watching your videos has made me realize a lot of things my son does that I just thought was his personality. Like him just liking to play alone, his meltdowns, his "frog jump" Your videos are so helpful, I had no idea what to look for.
2:50 Palilalia is when they repeat the same thing over and over. Echolalia is when they copy things that they’ve heard from someone else. It has “echo” in the name because they’re echoing what the other person said, not because they’re repeating themselves over and over.
Thank you so much for clarifying! Trying to explain it can be very difficult as there's SO many speech disorders and ways it can represent and some are used functional and some are not :)
Awesome video! I love that you did this! Great topic to talk about! About the repeating things over and over again: I say things in just one word sometimes. Like just one word. Just the subject, nothing else. Would that be considered a functional word? Like I might say apple and nothing else. I do it all the time at home. At work I speak in complete sentences. I think it’s just that I like to goof off at home instead of at work. I have to focus on my work at work so I come home to be silly. But I know what you’re talking about as far as echolalia and stuff. My dad probably has autism because he’s real quirky and weird, as am I. He makes me laugh. My mom always said she wanted to marry someone who made her laugh, and she did. She has anxiety and is on meds to help her. She always had panic attacks as a child because she would say to my grandmother, “Things look far away.” Now she knows it’s a panic attack. She knows that if she has one she has to sit down and calm down for a minute. It usually doesn’t affect her much. It’s not debilitating, just annoying. Well, thanks for sharing! Have a great day!
Thank you!! So helpful! I have a 2.5 and 4 year old autistic boys. My 2.5 year has like 3 functional words so considered nonverbal. My 4 year old didn't start fully talking till 3.5.
I also wanted too say that you been a huge help for my family on our journey. Your videos helped me a long the sensory, ADHD, and autism journey with my kids. Two of my 4 were diagnosed with autism than shortly after I was as an adult as I related so much to them. My husband was diagnosed with ADHD along with 3 of my 4 children. Your videos help my family a ton!
So my 2.5yrs old (she’s a week older then Nelly) She is 100% non verbal She has less then 10 words (functional or not) She can’t/ won’t repeat She doesn’t even make animals noises. Her main word is “Up” Other words include “mama, Nana, Dada, hands (ands), cat (at), eye (which she also says “I” for our dog Sky, and baby brother Issac) She is Not on the Autism spectrum at all. Her receptive language is completely fine. She listens and can follow directions with no issues. We have been waiting for over a year for Speech services here I also noticed that she had a few other words that she was able to say. But hasn’t said them in well over 6m like Egg
So I am not a medical professional but I will say it sounds like she has a language disorder for expressive communication. Penelope has both where she doesn't have hardly any receptive communication and very low expressive. I am so sorry you're having to wait. I hate that anyone has to wait THAT long for help for their child!
@@katiev9494 yes. She doesn’t have all the traits of Childhood apraxia of speech. But she does meet some. We have had her evaluated by a speech pathologist. They said it’s something about muscle memory. We have just been waiting forever for services to start.
@@OurLANDingCrew8 thanks Stephanie I just find it interesting that by the sounds of it. It sound like Nelly who’s also delayed has a larger vocabulary. This time last year when she still wasn’t saying words, people just thought it was because she was my youngest of a large family. But as times went on, she has not improved We are working on sign language with her to communicate currently. Normal she points and grunts to let us know what she wants.
@@OurLANDingCrew8 I was 24 before they labeled me with autism along with a tic disorder and ptsd and borderline intellectual functioning disorder so some of my word issues are tics more then echoalia
I am really glad to see Noah speech and vocabulary and fluency….. can you please discribe in one of your videos or if you have already please send a link….. how his speech progressed????… also my daughter is kind of similar….. but man Noah asked bazillion questions…… is that repetitive????? Did he used to mixed pro nouns from I and you ?????….. did he used be echolalic????? Did he used to scripting????? Why he is still attending speech???? He is really good and he doesn’t seems like needing one….. but again I am just a mum….. I really liked your channel and the way you portrayed every kid of yours…… what concerns do you have for Noah now???? Certainly not a speech…… I am not asking for professional advice but a mother’s opinion……I really wish you s as nd your family all the best…. Please reply or comment…. I am a concerned mum and I know all kids are different but I do look up to…..
Has Noah used to echoing???? Or script???? Had he used to mixed pro nouns????had he mixed up with preposition???? I am really happy and amazed as his speech gotten really great….. was it long process…… I guess what I am trying to find out was what can I do help along…… you did something right that made him progress greatly in terms of his speech and language…… I just wanted to know that missing link…..
My son is not yet diagnosed...he does a lot of labeling, meaning if we ask what is this, he will say what it is, or If I say A is for.. he will say a word starting with A...but do those count as functional words or at least just vocabulary words?
I’m so confused one of my sons therapist told us to count non functional words. I knew it didn’t sound right but I’m not sure what to do about this. We were also told to count signs.
My son only has about 30 words including signs and sounds I just keep getting different information from different places. Our journey has been difficult. Some one told us a clinical diagnosis doesn’t count but ABA place told us it does and so on.
I feel in my heart from all the research that my 2 boys for sure are not "neurotypical". and my daughter reminds me of, well, me. I have ADHD. But my mom took me to be checked a dr. said I was and so she sought a second opinion from a dr that just told her Nah she's a girl. girls don't get ADHD.

Hi. I have a question ! My daughter repeats what people say with some people. And at times they don’t
That could just be random or who she feels more comfortable with. That's a really common thing!
with me sometimes I get words stuck in my head and if I don't say them out loud the words will not leave my head
