Back when shows targeted for a child audience took guts to write an episode that touched on racism.
A A classic old people statement. I’m a 90’s kid and even I know today’s shows touch more on racism, homophobia, sexism, etc way more than the past. Controversial subjects used to be taboo. Nowadays, every show is a goddamn political speech. Saying that we stopped discussing such subjects in today’s show shows an incredible level of ignorance and lack of understanding. Like it or hate it, today’s age is highly politicized.
@@theseyi They said it took guts to do so not that shows nowadays don't have guts or don't talk about issues. But it is somewhat easier to do so nowadays which is a good thing. It's nice that shows of old pushed boundaries because it helped contribute to changes in media. Now we get even more topics covered in more shows; racism, homophobia, xenophobia, body shaming, bullying, and many more issues are more readily show on television now.

I remember this episode vividly. People need to realize that this it's good to have stuff like this on good shows because it can teach valuable lessons. You should do the retracted Hannah Montana special about diabetes, No Sugar Sugar!! It was WILDLY inaccurate so they had to pull it and make a new one called Uptight Oliver's Alright.

I remember this episode, unfortunately, it came out right around the time I was diagnosed with diabetes, so like other kids learned what it was through the show and man was that episode inaccurate. Like it didn't explain the main side of diabetes, the medical, but exclusively focused on diet and sugar (they tried to BS that sugar caused type 1 or that diabetics can't have sugar, when in fact we need it when we get low). I hope they do a video on it.
As a Type One Diabetic, it truly bothers me that they were trying to teach children that was how it worked.
From what i remember the girls were trying to keep him away from sugar but when he found out he told them he can have it in moderation, and in situations where his sugar was running low. Diabetes runs in my dad's side of the family and im prediabetic. I feel like that's alright, but it's not just candy or whatever that can mess you up

They spent the episode looking stupid to keep sugar out of his hands, but when he found out their plan he actually needed some sugar because his blood sugar was getting low. Fucking kids shows smh. Despite being raised in a household with someone who was, what I refer to as "subtly racist", I never saw racism for myself until I watched this episode on TV one night. My best friend was black, I remember being heartbroken at just the idea of her ever going through something like this just because of her skin color. It was definitely a big lesson as a child.

I don't know if All in the Family, Maude, and Roseanne would work because they were kind of the early version of what gets labelled as "dramadies" today (e.g. Shameless) so controversy and topical issues were kind of their bread and butter.
ETA: Honestly, I was surprised they've done two episodes of The Golden Girls because, while a straight forward sitcom, it won a ton of Golden Globes and Emmy Awards, so it has a lot more prestige than the TGIF line-up.
I'd don't know if I'd want to see a comedy episode about rape....but then he did the differnt strokes episode about the child molester, and that isn't any better. hmm...
@@KaseyWynne It wasn't really played as comedy. It was done very serious and a few of All in the Family's international broadcasters cut the episode from broadcast. That's why I don't think All in the Family would count, it was always tackling issues. There's another episode where the family's drag queen friend gets killed in a gay bashing which triggers Edith questioning her faith in God. It wasn't a lighthearted show.

God, the "Battle with Racism" arc was so boring. Raven spent like 3 episodes just powering up. And the mall took like 10 episodes to blow up despite them saying it was gonna explode in 45 minutes.
