It's true, not everyone has had the opportunity to see/hear the show on Broadway. For many people in flyover states, this is their opportunity to experience the musical for the first time. They don't need to hear Joey from down the street singing. So let Joey wait for the sing along at Christmas time
@ oh I know. Haha. I feel the same way. I rather everyone lipsync until that day comes but the renaissance movie. I did not care. I sung my butt off that night lol
If someone starts singing during the movie, I will get up and stand directly in front of them and block their view for the entire film. I mean, I am just “having fun,” right? Jesus, people are selfish and entitled
Here’s the answer: NO!!! What you may consider fun is disruptive to everyone else around you. We came to hear the cast sing, not you. If you want to sing wait for the sing along version. People should be able to enjoy going to the movies and not have to be told to wait until the movie hits streaming because you feel that your right to sing is more important than the rights of others to enjoy the movie without any disruptions.
I agree with you. And I like the compromise of the sing-along version at Christmas, but there's another way to compromise: have 2 screenings of the show simultaneously. In many theaters they will have a movie that is anticipated to be extremely popular showing on 2 screens. Sometimes it's one screen in 3D and the other normal view. Here, you could have one screen available for sing along and one screen for people who just want to enjoy the cast.
@hueriskein Can't agree with this more, because people who live in flyover states don't always get to make it to New York to see and hear the show as it was cast and produced. Let them enjoy it that way. Alternatively, theaters could offer 2 simultaneous screenings of the show, the way they do with movies that are available in 3D. Have one screening room for people who want to sing along and 1 for people who just want to enjoy the movie. They do it with popular films all the time. There's no reason why they couldn't do two screens for 1 show with this.
The soundtrack is out. Sing along in the car or in the shower. If one sees the play live, even though it’s been running for 21 years and many have seen it multiple times, the audience doesn’t sing along. That’s just theatre etiquette.
I paid money for a ticket to hear the singing in the movie, not a random person in the room. It's selfish to sing during the movie IMO, do that on your own time.
Absolutely not. The same reason you’re not meant to talk or text during a movie; people are paying to watch and enjoy a movie, not to have to deal with people thinking they can sing along.
As a theater kid myself, my answer is….NO! It is really not respectful. Also it’s a whole new brand movie. It’s respect to the film itself and makers itself as well, not just to the audiences and guests around you.
no, theatre etiquette means sit your butt down and be quiet. If you wanna sing-along party, you can rent out a private theatre, you don’t get to ruin something other people paid for
I have seen groups of young people show up at a movie theater and spend the time running up and down the stairs to go get additional snacks and basically just having conversation throughout the film. I think they grow up with home theaters and streaming things at home and they no longer know how to act in public. For what those kids were spending on snacks, they could have easily gone to an Applebee's, had dinner and conversation together.
When I saw THE LITTLE MERMAID live action movie, no one sang but there was applause after every song. You can applaud the numbers but don't sing!!! Think of it as if you're seeing the stage version on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre, in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, or any of the productions worldwide!!! Another interesting part is the reacting to certain parts of WICKED that generally gets a loud response (Cheers, Screams, and Applause) from when you see the stage version. Seen it 5 times on Broadway and I always get chills on those certain moments. For example, when Ariana makes first her bubble entrance as "Glinda" or when you first see Cynthia as "Elphaba". Of course, the moment Cynthia first takes flight in DEFYING GRAVITY and after her war cry.
I'm a bit torn. I get why half of the fans want to hear the songs in the theaters. I also feel for the other half of the fans who want to sing along. But here is how you split the difference the soundtrack is available now, so you can both listen and sing along
And the proposed sing along presentation at Christmas is another great idea! Also, the way some theaters present a marvel movie in 3D and another screen with normal view, they could offer 2 theaters: one for people who want to sing along and 1 for people who don't. One show, two screens. It's not like they haven't done that with other popular films.
