Hi Lin, I kept a cutting in nothing but a coffee mug filled with water from 2001 to 2006! Yes... 5 YEARS! I was lazy. ahem.. I mean very busy. LOL! 😂 I have well water so maybe that made a difference. I finally potted it with some other cuttings not knowing what color it was. It was easy to determine which cutting was which though because it became hard and thick near the roots from being in water (it's my guess). It was such a pleasant surprise when it turned out to be a beautiful pale peach color. My cactus is full of buds right now and I'm so excited to cross pollinate both my plants this year. I hope it won't change its original peach color. TYFS! 🙂

I have been putting my cuttings in water for rooting for years. That is the only way that I have ever started new plants. You don't have to baby your cuttings. They are tough and starting new plants that way are so easy.

I love your greenhouse setup! My collection of plants is pretty similar. FYI, the cactus in this video is a Thanksgiving cactus. An easy way to identify the different types are by the edges of their segments. If it has a pointed edge, it’s a Thanksgiving cactus, a more rounded edge with just bumps is a Christmas cactus, and one with a completely rounded edge is an Easter cactus.

Hi there :-D yes I used to have a Schlumbergera opuntiodes that I got as a cutting and it rooted really well in water, unfortunately though it died after getting a bad spider mite infestation attack, but it rooted well in water, good luck with your cutting, and thanks so much for watching XXXX

I watch u and Danielletells all the time . I have three thanksgiving cactus 3 colors coming tomorrow three separate plant starts. Instead of having three single starts can I take those three starts and take cutting from them to immediately start fuller plants ????

Hi Georgina :-D I have now switched to using a mix of Orchid soil and John innes number 2 and perlite for Schlumbergeras, I use 40% Clover brand John Innes number 2 with 30% Westland Orchid soil and 30% perlite, it seems to work well but you can also use 60% houseplant soil with 40% perlite, I used to use added sand to the mix too, but I find the sand is too drying and the orchid and John innes and perlite is better for these Epiphytic cacti, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Love your videos! You are soo knowledgable! Quick question, what is the best time of the year to do propagation of Christmas cactus? I'd like to propagate some now, in August, ( zone 9-11) so hopefully they will be set by Christmas, to give as gifts. I realize they will probably not bloom flowers the first year, but just wanted to know the best time of year to do the propagation. Keep up the good work!

Just curious, I have some Christmas cactus cuttings in water at the moment. I had to slice the bottom segment because they had worms growing out of them when I first planted them in soil (don't ask). There are some roots growing out of some of the higher nodes but will roots grow out of the cut end just like epis do?
Hi Justin :-D yes these cacti should but not always send out roots from the cut end too, and its very common for them to send out roots from the higher nodes as well or sometimes instead of the cut end, this has happened to me too, and a few of mine have only sent roots from the higher nodes, but as soon as the roots are long enough ( about 1cms long ) you can go ahead and pot them up, and sometimes roots will still form from the bottom cut part at a later date when planted up :-D Good luck with your propagation, its so much fun to propagate these plants and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXXX

Hi Jill, the best thing to do is to let your Thanksgiving cactus soil dry out in the soil it has been planted in, to let it rest and acclimatize to its new soil, keep it dry for the next month and then start to introduce water slowly into the soil, you can mist the cactus if it starts to show signs of shrivelling, keep it in a bright position but away from direct sunshine for the next month, it should recover again in the following weeks, thanks so much for watching and Good luck with your cactus XXXXX

Hi there :-D i think because the buds had started to form and you moved the plant in from the dark it may have confused the plant and caused the buds to drop, but its still possible that your plant may still re bloom again

i have really good luck rooting in water, but once i put them in soil, they normally die in a month, no idea why, just always do, so i love to grow the plants in water for a long long time, keeps them green and plump, but, always the soil it rots, ugh
Thats fantastic that you have great success too rooting in water Anthony :-D sometimes it can be down to the type of soil that can harm them, too much nutrient or too high lime etc can effect them , I plant the cuttings up in a loam based soil with plenty of grit and sand and fertilise very little until the following year, sometimes too much fertiliser can scorch the foliage and kill off the leaves
@@desertplantsofavalon i have used it all at one time or another, i was told to use bark, perilite and cactus soil, but still they shrivel, i have tried every soil you can imagine and they still shrivel and no i do not fertlize mine , so no idea why once i put them in soil, they always shrivel and die,

I watch u and Danielletells all the time . I have three thanksgiving cactus 3 colors coming tomorrow three separate plant starts. Instead of having three single starts can I take those three starts and take cutting from them to immediately start fuller plants ????
If I can then do I have any tips??
Thats fantastic you have 3 different coloured Thanksgiving cacti April, :-D if the cuttings are long ( e.g 6 segments or more on each cutting ) you can definitely take more cuttings from them too, but its best to take cuttings of at least 3 segments on each of them for better success, if the cuttings are small I would wait until they have grown bigger and you have more segments before taking cuttings from them, Good luck with your wonderful new cuttings and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXX

Hey! I have a few that fell off, do you think I should put in water or soil, also how long do I leave them before I do so if they ares freshly broken?

Hi! with peat based composts gone now, what compost do you recommend for Shlumbergera? Is there a brand (s) you like for loam based or peat based substitute? John Innes type? Thanks x
Hi Georgina :-D I have now switched to using a mix of Orchid soil and John innes number 2 and perlite for Schlumbergeras, I use 40% Clover brand John Innes number 2 with 30% Westland Orchid soil and 30% perlite, it seems to work well but you can also use 60% houseplant soil with 40% perlite, I used to use added sand to the mix too, but I find the sand is too drying and the orchid and John innes and perlite is better for these Epiphytic cacti, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Love your videos! You are soo knowledgable! Quick question, what is the best time of the year to do propagation of Christmas cactus? I'd like to propagate some now, in August, ( zone 9-11) so hopefully they will be set by Christmas, to give as gifts. I realize they will probably not bloom flowers the first year, but just wanted to know the best time of year to do the propagation. Keep up the good work!

How long did your cuttings rooted in water?

Just curious, I have some Christmas cactus cuttings in water at the moment. I had to slice the bottom segment because they had worms growing out of them when I first planted them in soil (don't ask). There are some roots growing out of some of the higher nodes but will roots grow out of the cut end just like epis do?
Hi Justin :-D yes these cacti should but not always send out roots from the cut end too, and its very common for them to send out roots from the higher nodes as well or sometimes instead of the cut end, this has happened to me too, and a few of mine have only sent roots from the higher nodes, but as soon as the roots are long enough ( about 1cms long ) you can go ahead and pot them up, and sometimes roots will still form from the bottom cut part at a later date when planted up :-D Good luck with your propagation, its so much fun to propagate these plants and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXXX

Hi, I just got a schlumbergera and one of its stems broke, can I root it again?

Hi Jill, the best thing to do is to let your Thanksgiving cactus soil dry out in the soil it has been planted in, to let it rest and acclimatize to its new soil, keep it dry for the next month and then start to introduce water slowly into the soil, you can mist the cactus if it starts to show signs of shrivelling, keep it in a bright position but away from direct sunshine for the next month, it should recover again in the following weeks, thanks so much for watching and Good luck with your cactus XXXXX

Hi there :-D i think because the buds had started to form and you moved the plant in from the dark it may have confused the plant and caused the buds to drop, but its still possible that your plant may still re bloom again

i have really good luck rooting in water, but once i put them in soil, they normally die in a month, no idea why, just always do, so i love to grow the plants in water for a long long time, keeps them green and plump, but, always the soil it rots, ugh
Thats fantastic that you have great success too rooting in water Anthony :-D sometimes it can be down to the type of soil that can harm them, too much nutrient or too high lime etc can effect them , I plant the cuttings up in a loam based soil with plenty of grit and sand and fertilise very little until the following year, sometimes too much fertiliser can scorch the foliage and kill off the leaves
@@desertplantsofavalon i have used it all at one time or another, i was told to use bark, perilite and cactus soil, but still they shrivel, i have tried every soil you can imagine and they still shrivel and no i do not fertlize mine , so no idea why once i put them in soil, they always shrivel and die,

You can just stick them in dirt and not even root them in water... I do both... I luv watching the roots grow
