Scotty Kilmer Hi Scott. Can you tell me where my EGR part us in my truck ? I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 4wd 6.0l engine. It's an LT. I have tried almost everything ....this stupid truck is a pulling/ hauling truck. It pulls horse trailers ect...... .But here lately I. Loosing power. I was going up the Mountain after work today, and it lost power. It made it but at 15 mph all the way over. Then last week we had a friend that needed some stuff hauled to Landfill. It was only about 100 extra lbs, and once again lost power... help !! Thanks
I wish there was a product called, "Scotty in a can," where you opened it and a copy of Scotty popped, fixed your vehicle, and magically dissapeared when the work was done.
I love Scotty, how you go regularly beyond the prevalent 'find the faulty part and replace it' mentality. I believe that you provide a great service with these unOrtodox instructional videos for those, to whom car is not a luxury toy, but rather an essential tool of transportation, which has to be maintained in a pinch. Knowing how the average age of vehicles are rising the last few decades, we maybe in the majority too.
TODAY IS THE DAY that I found the ONE video of the ONE engine that I have that for the SPECIFIC problem I am experiencing, and Scotty coming to save the day!!!
Me thinking: "I'll watch a couple of Scotty's EGR cleaning videos, one of them must have the same style EGR as my Isuzu." Scotty: "...this Isuzu..." Me: "Well, that's fortunate."
Thank you a lot Scotty. My Pontiac Torrent 06 got this kind of EGR valve and it used to got the same problem. The thief in the dealership wanted to change all the valve setup and charge me $600 (pieces + labor) for replace it. I almost snapped a tooth when he told me that. You really give a COMPLETE guide of what to do and not only say "clean only the valve and that's all". Thanks.
@Scotty Kilmer You are awesome, Your no nonsense approach and directly to the point fixes are the best, I appreciate you for sharing this great information , many people would covet their little secrets and not share anything. Thank you so much for passing your many years of experience best advice to myself and others. You provide a tremendous service to society. You should feel proud as you deserve it.
What a coincidence! This morning I cleaned the egr on my 3.5 isuzu trooper. Thank you so much Sir. I'm a big fan of yours and every afternoon I check for new videos.
I just want to say i really appreciate how you take the time to answer all these comments any other youtuber wouldnt even consider it and that really puts you over the top! Props!
It's long fixed, that's when I got it from a customer where it was hiding unused for 16 years. I like the smoke for the intro there, a little special effect action.
So some of what you did was while installed so can some of this stuff be done without taking that thing out. My 07 Commander with a 5.7 has made it not very easy to get to.
Even if rusted out, get some WD40 and spray it and run the vehicle a couple of times, on your last run, spray the bolts with cold water when the engine is still hot and then try to remove the bolt, if you have an impact gun it will come off easy. I did this to a 2003 Honda Pilot that I thought for sure that it would break off because of the way it looked (almost melted).
Yeah easy as... My golf mk5 was a b****d c***T of a job. Cleaned it like new. 250 miles later light and code came back. Inlet manifold needs cleaning too... I'm not doing it. I'm gonna spray it on the car. Too much of a mission
often no symptoms at all, other than a check engine light on saying the egr system has a problem. It's an anti pollution system and cars often run better when they clog up
I just did this to my car but i used a guitar string. I did it by taking off the throttle body to get to the pipe thats about 2 inches in the intake manifold. It was so clogged up! It seemed to fix the problem quite well and the light hasnt been on since. Anyway, i wish i would have seen this video earlier as you posted it two days after i did it and its even the same car and engine model! haha
you could have a problem with the EVAP vent system, see that a lot with such a problem. when near E, there is a lot of empty space so the pump can push out fuel better with less resistance as a full or half full tank would have.
glad I live here in Texas. rust can be hell to replace. Take it off at each end carefully, or , pay a good man with a torch to cut it off and weld a new one on.
Great tip. My brother's F250 with 460ci gas was triggering a code for the fuel banks running lean. Found out the EGR was sticking partially open causing excessive air in fuel mixture. So it as nothing to do with the fuel rails at all. Cleaned the EGR and CEL went by-by.
I fixed a 98 rodeo wich had the same code, the valve wasn't stuck but the carbon build up in the tube was very packed do i had to take the throttle body off and cleaned it with a clothes hanger, but this is a very good tip thanks Scotty
so sorry to hear that Scotty. My cat of 12 years died in Jan so I understand. its very hard to lose a pet thats been part of the family for so long. but I'm sure you gave her a great life :)
many things can do that, but number one is big vacuum leaks, try my video "finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar" and also pressure test the fuel pump, it may be going out.
That EGR valve looks completely different than the one's I'm used to. I don't even know if I could identify one if I didn't have a service manual. The one on my Camaro looked a bit like a mini power brake booster. But, this is a neat trick for the modern valves...
My Toyota Prius 3rd gen. We used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back and had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and we finally freed the EGR assembly. Good video
under the glove box should be an open two terminal connector. You jump those terminals together using a jumper wire. then the code flashes as in this video
tons of things wear out in old trucks, my advice, see a good front end man for a free analysis and estimate on what's really worn. replace the most worn parts first.
I love your channel, I love all your videos, all that I've seen there are still a lot that I wanna see from you. You're absolutely right in this video and perfect sense. BTW, when you blew on the EGR with your mouth I felt like it was a little too close for comfort. I hope there weren't any carbon that stuck to your lips. Don't be disappointed though, bec., I went on to do an EGR delete. Blocked the in & out of that sucker completely. From the in section & it's out section of my 4runner turbo diesel. Not legal in some places. If your DMV is very thorough. I just wanna share the other things I do for my vehicle some of your followers might agree or like it & some might not, just make sure you use top grade but low viscous 100%synth oil like pennzoil or valvoline are my faves, next in line are castrol, motul, or mobil1 0w-30, zic is good too & also liqui moly, I've used it. synth all the way. 0w-30. Add more grounding cables and don't neglect to put in some fresh top grade glow plugs if you can get an slightly uprated aftermarket glow plug, get it. Don't go bonkers with it. Just the next step up. Not two or definitely note 3 or more steps up. Use aftermarket air filters like K&N.
injector assemblies come apart in those at that age, due to the over use of cheap plastic that cracks and leaks internally when that old. I'd bet the farm it's that.
Mr. Scotty, great minds think alike! I used the same technique 3 months ago to unplug the EGR tube on my 91 LS400. Apparently "the book" suggests removing the transmission to due there not being enough clearance to remove the bolts at the bottom of the tube. Ridiculous! I went a step further and disconnected the cats to prevent debris from plugging them up. An "8hr" job was reduced to 1 hr including one well deserved cold one at the end of the job.
Great video. Thanks for all your hard work. I was just restringing a guitar, and thought ... hey, these heavy strings would work great if you don't have a spedo cable hanging around. I haven't tried it, and bet they would need to be spun in the right direction (as they are wound strings and wound one way) or they might unravel. But, your idea saves taking an intake manifold off sometimes ... great video! Keep em coming!
this is my 1st video i saw of you just happen to clik on it and wow loverd it the best video of how to iv ever seen thank you and keep up all the good work god bless '
Hey scotty, I've been fixing a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t for my sister for months. EPC light comes on, and the OBD-II scanner gives me about 10 or so errors. I replaced the throttle body, cleaned the EGR system, and had the "Throttle Pedal Actuator" (Gas Pedal) reset. Should i buy a new TPA? VW had to think outside the box and use an electric signal instead of fly-by-wire. any suggestions? Oh and it's a 5-speed.
Scotty, I have to replace the y-pipe on my Maxima. The car is very rusty underneath from the harsh Montreal climate/salt. Do you have any tips for removing exhaust parts on an older rusty car without it turning into a nightmare?
Scotty, when you reamed out the EGR's intake passage (smaller opening) with the piano wire is there a danger of those carbon dirt chunks being sucked into the combustion chamber and messing up the engine? Similar to like when a car is run without an air filter.
@ 1:55 you;re about to rotor rooter out the crud in the port that 'goes into the engine'. I don't know much about this stuff, but then arent you gonna get chunks of stuff in there that could score valves or something?
Thats some good advice - i’m gonna try this. My Impala 2002 keeps throwing this code(p0401) dealership said they cleaned it, but the code came back. So i’m thinking i need to get in there and really clean it/maybe lube it like you did there. Its also got an evap code now, unsure where it’s coming from. The car is only at 36K, but it has likely sat a while, and i got it from cali (hot weather) and i live in wi. I’m still trying to untangle all the issues with it.
Scotty, long hair looks good on you. You look like John Lennon; my favorite. After fixing Hummer, you need to tune up the Stingray that appears in the intro as well. Its exhaust blows like a factory chimney from 1960s.
Not inside the engine (crankcase and moving parts) but inside the intake manifold and all the ducts where recirculated exhaust gases flow - yes. I had such an issue on BMW e39 diesel where diameter of intake manifold ducts were quite reduced by carbon deposits, even the car was running ok. I'd like to hear from Scotty or someone else what are the experiences and regulations about bypassing or completely removing EGR valve (and it's belonging components).

Scotty Kilmer can you do this for a 1999 v6 ford mustang. I've changed the egr valve but still throws the code
Scotty Kilmer get a cordless drill Scotty 😜

You forgot to listen carburetor cleaner.
I thought this would damage the diaphragm. Yes/No?

I'd expect some bonus questions and answers though.
id suply the beers :)

Scotty it's 2021 and this video is still teaching. Thank you very much!
I've used my oil dip stick to clear out the EGR tube in the intake. It worked for a really clogged tube.
That's a good idea
Not recommended. Bad movr
MacGyver has approved your actions.
@@michaell3711 Why not? Cause u didn't think of it first? Lol
Thanks I will try before spending hours trying to find the right cable! I have N extra trans dipstick

This was the most immaculate piece of mechanic Kung fu that I have seen. The speedorooter was exactly the trick! Thank you sir!

Ahhh. Mine is right on top.

Oooh that drill is an oldie. Back when Black & Decker made a pretty descent unit before they got into the home depot & walmart line of cheaper tools.

True life saver!
Scotty, I just did this to my Yukon......man you saved me about 500 dollars! Love your content, hope all is well with the move. Best wishes!!
Thanks Scotty! Always appreciate your comprehensive, insightful and high-quality DIY videos.

Scotty I don't not what we guys would do without you, Your a big help & THANKS

Don’t you just love that sound Scotty makes when he tightens bolts? 🤣
Unnnh.- that’s about right.
yes, a gallon of lacquer thinner to an almost full tank of gas, burns the sulphur off
yes, any metal cable thin enough to go in the holes
glad I live here in Texas. rust can be hell to replace. Take it off at each end carefully, or , pay a good man with a torch to cut it off and weld a new one on.

Hey Scottie. Just wanted to say that you're an awesome mechanic. I've learned so much from your videos. Thank you for your knowledge.
Thanks Scotty, hoping my Chevy Astro van runs better after cleaning the EGR. I had to do sooooo much effort to get to the EGR on this van its crazy
Hey Scotty, great videos i have saved lots of money watching your vids. keep em coming! God Bless you!
yes, if the mechanical fan is spinning fast and the clutch isnt' shot on it.
Thank you very much. Did this exact process to an 88 buick lesabre 3.8L. Works exactly like new.
so sorry to hear that Scotty. My cat of 12 years died in Jan so I understand. its very hard to lose a pet thats been part of the family for so long. but I'm sure you gave her a great life :)
if it runs OK, live with it. If not, replace the distributor as the sensor is built inside that.
they will just get sucked into the engine and be burned up. It's not like they're steel or anything, small particles will just burn up
may have just bent the dust shield on the brakes, pull the wheels and see if that's rubbing now. Pray it's that easy.
most have them, but some modern ones don't use em with VVT engines
many things can do that, but number one is big vacuum leaks, try my video "finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar" and also pressure test the fuel pump, it may be going out.
this guy has saved me $$$,$$$ at least if not more he is a national treasure. Thank you, Scotty.
That EGR valve looks completely different than the one's I'm used to. I don't even know if I could identify one if I didn't have a service manual. The one on my Camaro looked a bit like a mini power brake booster. But, this is a neat trick for the modern valves...
either the fan cooling the radiator isn't working right, OR the radiator is old and can't dissipate the extra head AC causes and needs replacing now
it's running rich, leaking fuel injectors often do that. sometimes cleaning can help, try my video "how to clean fuel injectors on your car"
My Toyota Prius 3rd gen. We used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back and had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. You are AMAZING
simple Easy to follow Fixes don’t have to take it to a shop just follow Scotty Kilmer !!!
Thank you !!!!
you've got a good point, but I did get the ac to blow again for the meantime
Hey Scott. Does a 2003 h2 hummer have a idle air control valve? I have the p0300 code and I'm taking steps to fixing the code. Thanks
under the glove box should be an open two terminal connector. You jump those terminals together using a jumper wire. then the code flashes as in this video
tons of things wear out in old trucks, my advice, see a good front end man for a free analysis and estimate on what's really worn. replace the most worn parts first.
generally carbs need overhauling, they are pretty cheap little things that clog easily.
Perfect. I just had this exact problem on my 2000 Vauxhall Frontera 3.2 which is that exact engine. Cheers dude. 👍
I love your channel, I love all your videos, all that I've seen there are still a lot that I wanna see from you. You're absolutely right in this video and perfect sense. you lose the egr valve function, which can make the catalytic converter run hotter and create more NOX gas.
spanner light means a code has stored.
get that code from a scan tool, and e mail me that code
"how to safely buy a used car' is already out there. I would buy toyota though
injector assemblies come apart in those at that age, due to the over use of cheap plastic that cracks and leaks internally when that old. I'd bet the farm it's that.
You, sir, are a god among mortals.
they need to dry out a while, but cleaner will burn off and then run normally.
Just what i was looking for. I have the same problem. Thanks for sharing another great video.
probably something to do with production left over rubber particles.
yes, to clean them, but they rarely clog up inside on toyotas
my fuel pressure is in the 60's. i will check for leaks today. thanks alot scottyy!
I use lacquer thinner myself
you replace them, they really aren't repairable. You can mess with the spring tension on some, but that's just pot luck trying to hit it right.
An "8hr" job was reduced to 1 hr including one well deserved cold one at the end of the job.
you make things easyer , thankyou for the tip
MY EGR VALVE WAS STICKING, FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS, HOPEFULLY IT WILL DO THE TRICK. THANK YOU!
Did it work? The people want to know... 🤔
Worked great for my car. Thanks Scotty.
I love the way you explained things...you are awesome...😊❤😊
not always, many gms will get carbon stuck on the other side from broken pieces coming out the exhaust.
Weed whacker shaft cable works
Hmmmmm thanks,. I actually have broken weed Wacker still residing in the tool shed ... maybe easier to extract that cable vs a vehicle speedom' !?
yes, IF you can get the cable to go in that far
this is my 1st video i saw of you just happen to clik on it and wow loverd it the best video of how to iv ever seen thank you and keep up all the good work god bless
'
it often does.
Hey scotty, I've been fixing a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t for my sister for months. EPC light comes on, and the OBD-II scanner gives me about 10 or so errors. VW had to think outside the box and use an electric signal instead of fly-by-wire. any suggestions? Oh and it's a 5-speed.
it will work on any EGR system
Scotty, I have to replace the y-pipe on my Maxima. The car is very rusty underneath from the harsh Montreal climate/salt. Do you have any tips for removing exhaust parts on an older rusty car without it turning into a nightmare?
they are tiny little pieces, easily crushed and burned inside the engine
Scotty, when you reamed out the EGR's intake passage (smaller opening) with the piano wire is there a danger of those carbon dirt chunks being sucked into the combustion chamber and messing up the engine? Similar to like when a car is run without an air filter.
Pull out the shop-vac ?
back side of the engine, pretty hard to see. Go to a place like auto zone, they can show you on their computer screen pictures
Did you have to replace the gasket as well?
@ 1:55 you;re about to rotor rooter out the crud in the port that 'goes into the engine'. I don't know much about this stuff, but then arent you gonna get chunks of stuff in there that could score valves or something?
You're a life and time saver dude
Thats some good advice - i’m gonna try this. My Impala 2002 keeps throwing this code(p0401) dealership said they cleaned it, but the code came back. THAT'S a problem with the turbo boost system, often a bad wastegate
Scotty, your knowledge is amazing! I wish I knew one tenth the stuff you know.
No, I'm gettting back into the long hair of my youth. Though the heat of texas will probably put an end to that soon.
Scotty, long hair looks good on you. You look like John Lennon; my favorite. After fixing Hummer, you need to tune up the Stingray that appears in the intro as well. Its exhaust blows like a factory chimney from 1960s.
blower stopped blowing air from a massive melt down electronically due to the use of cheap parts.
Scotty's my go-to-dude!
Thanks for the help man glad you make these extremely helpful videos and for responding
Scotty is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scotty is the man 👍
Great tip. I really like the speedo cable snake :)
non interference unless at very high speeds.
Great show. Which used cars do you recommend under $15K?
Can you make a video on buying a used car and what to look for?
sure, try it yourself. it often works
That was a great informative video Scotty , you're the best. Thx
Does the carbon build up in the EGR valve also indicate carbon build up inside the engine?
not really
Not inside the engine (crankcase and moving parts) but inside the intake manifold and all the ducts where recirculated exhaust gases flow - yes. I had such an issue on BMW e39 diesel where diameter of intake manifold ducts were quite reduced by carbon deposits, even the car was running ok. I'd like to hear from Scotty or someone else what are the experiences and regulations about bypassing or completely removing EGR valve (and it's belonging components).
good cars, but somewhat pricey for that age , though that's kilmometers and not miles, so not that bad.
