I really think you should make a full series on this explaining each portion in detail so people get more insight. Things that include pre-shoot prep, lighting, equipment, settings, color grade and exporting for different mediums. Regardless, brilliant video as always!

this is by far the best video i've seen on this topic. so many others feel that style is crafted completely in lightroom, when in my opinion the more that is done in pre production the better!

I really shifted from heavily focused on editing to much being more professional in the way I handle the 'pre-production'. It makes you really a better photographer if you learn to nail exposure, white balance and composition in camera and in my case, it makes me less frustrated. The great thing is that since I shifted to Fujifilm, I am actually able to get already very decent results out-of-camera.

It's something I struggle so much with. I always liked to try different things when it comes to the subject, like, I love to take portraits and boudoir pictures but the styles still change a lot because for the models sometimes a more softer and more feminine approach is fitting and for another model a more alternative and urban look is more fitting. And I really don't like to have that one "filter" like many photographers have on Instagram. I kind of fear to stick with one look because I can easily get bored with that. But as you said already, I try to edit a lot less than before because I try to set the shoot up to have almost everything in line so I only have to do some little corrections. So thank you so much for this video!

Thank you for this amazing discussion. There are too many out there who are ruining their own creations with over-editing and only doing what sells or what gets them the most likes on social media. Thanks for reminding me to explore and create my own style.

I find I love lots of different styles, from vintage to bright and colorful, to black and white, to landscape, wildlife and street work. I just love great images. In photography, what is that style called? As a newbie, I don't think I will change much in style regards, as I decorate my personal space the same way. Thanks again. BTW, your voice is absolutely gorgeous. I see a future in speaking. ;)

  • @Maalekg651

I think where i've struggled with is exposing properly. I travel the world and do alot of landscape and environmental portraits. So when i'm on top of a mountain, hanging meet off a bluff infront of the ocean, or trekking through the jungle to a waterfall the lighting is obviously different and some times can get super dark, or moody from clouds or mist. So the presets i've created for my self change drastically based off of how i exposed my photo. do you have any suggestions on how to create consistency in edits when you're faced with ever changing natural lighting that you cant control like that.

Can a sports photography have a style? I mainly shoot volleyball and basketball and track and field but i sometimes shoot an occasional football and soccer game. Would bright and punchy be a style or should sports be shot a certain way? Perhaps just SOOC?

Subscribed and followed you on IG. One thing I appreciate about your portraits is that you dont obliterate the background and turn it to mush like has been the trend for a few years now, this whole bokeh obsession. Thankfully it seems to be dying out. I also like that you use wider angles with your portraits, one thing I am going to start doing more of.

I can't seem to find one significant style to claim to my photos. I enjoy different styles, it really depends on the mood I'm in or whatever creative my brain comes up with.
I like portrait, street photography and I also want to get a little more into product. But also with light and colors I variate. Sometimes I like harsh lights and shadows and sometimes I want a soft and smooth look. Colorgrading too... sometimes I want a natural look and sometimes I want to get a little more creative.
I'm not sure if I can limit that all to one style...
What do you think of this? Any advice?

    • @ViktorFury

You need to ask yourself whether you're looking to do this for a living or not.
If not, then why are you constraining yourself? Do whatever you like and not what some algorithm is telling you is the flavour of the month. All of us have and do struggle with this question all the time and the sooner you realise that 'style' is a function of particular types of lighting, tonal and colour grading (with a little composition), both pre- and syn-editting, the sooner you understand that that 'style' can't be applied to ALL the photography you enjoy. Create boxes for the work you do and if you want to shoot professionally in a certain niche apply that box of images to the work you present there and keep the rest of your work separate.
I hate to be harsh but I don't really understand what Sam thinks is so unique about his work. There are thousands upon thousands of people out there (some better, some worse) shooting the exact same 'style'. Faded 'natural' filmic lifestyle shots are absolutely everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, Sams photography is great but I couldn't pick it from the deluge of similar looking content out there.

I really hate Instagram for how it makes me feel about taking photos. It has made taking photos a battle of anxiety now, of whether an image fits a box which I have yet to wall in.
It's sad because I loved photography for the variety and playfulness you could have with trying new things and enjoying that process. Learning that I have to stick to one style or motif to grow feels like it robs me of developing as a photographer... If I'm stuck doing one thing that defines me I feel stifled and bored. The "exact same look" between photos philosophy hurts my soul. But then it's probably why I don't get as much work through my Instagram.
I know it sounds kind of wanky, but I want to take the photos I want because of the art and I want to always be able to experiment and try new styles without the voice that now sits in the back of my mind telling me that photo I took is useless now.

AlexJCorona You’re thinking about it way too much. Just shoot. Please yourself! Regarding IG they changed the format a while ago so you can upload an image of any ratio. I get so bored seeing all these tiny pics with big white borders to control how the feed looks. But now you can upload the image, it’ll appear as a decently framed square on your feed but when you open it bigger you can see the full frame. Which is awesome. No more stupid white borders!

Consistency is the death of creativity. I'm sorry, but I find it hard to accept the title of this video. I do like most of the advice that you provide. However, I don't agree with you highlighting personal style. I believe that the best of work can come from stepping out of your comfort zone by simply experimenting beyond your knowledge of photography. My advice would be to avoid personal style all together. It might seem as a counter to what your video is representing. Which it is. However, I do respect your opinion and the effort you put behind it.

    • @adrianroc1
      @adrianroc1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I somewhat disagree. We need to be consistent in certain capacities of art to maintain a baseline to continuously progress from. It is actually good to have a personal style. It is the expression of inspiration that changes. Many great painters had definite styles which guided their creative expression such as Monet, Ruben and Van Gogh. These can all be associated with the emotional undertone in your image, usage of light and tonal distribution. Therefore many aspects of your work can change but I believe maintaining the baseline of a personal style allows one to drive the creativity machinery forward.

    • @virtualwarp

      @@adrianroc1
I'm sorry but I can not agree with this statement. If you keep a preprogrammed "style", which you believe is truly yours, then you'll never be able to move beyond that what you're familiar with. That's why you shouldn't bother by trying to keep a consistent style within your photography. Move beyond the line of familiarity and discover something that you didn't know you were looking for. If you stay within the boundaries you build you'll never learn, nor experience, anything other than what you already know or have experienced. Inconsistency is the key to originality, innovation and art. Though, this is simply my opinion. You are free to do whatever pleases you. I just choose to work with this mindset.

@@virtualwarp If there is no limit there is no creativity & there is no orginality. You can become more creative with in your style than trying to be hundred things. I'm not a photographer or anything related, I'm a music producer. So as a music producer if u need to be remembered u need to have a signature sound. But in that sound you need to be creative to not make the same exact thing again and again. Like if i'm gonna do jazz it won't be just jazz but jazz in my sound and in the next track i can do pop and it shouldn't be another pop song but pop in my sound.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you.
Originality is born within the unknown.
How else can it be original?
There should never be a limit on what you can accomplish.
Of course, music differs a lot from photography, or any form of visual art.
Though, some of my favorite musicians were able to completely reinvent their sound from album to album.
My favorite band (The Killers) would be a good example.
