Tom saves Matthew’s relationship with Mary here, Matthew restores Tom’s dignity by making him his best man, they work together running the estate, Matthew comforts Tom after Sybil’s death, and they excel at playing cricket together. My personal headcanon is that when Tom remarried, he had a son and named him after Matthew.
Honestly more than anything I loved how 'human' this TV show is.. everyone from the servants to the aristocrats have their own human flaws and emotions.. this series taught me so much about life

He stayed true to his beliefs, and never gave up on Sybil despite the fact that she was so unsure for so long. He was willing to wait at the house for as long as it took for her to make up her mind. And his growth throughout the series is amazing. This scene with Matthew is so powerful and shows a wonderful brotherhood between the two. This shows how much he cares for Mary and Matthew.
