In order to hopefully spread some actual information I thought it might be worthwhile to go through what this video gets wrong Firstly: Elfdalian is one word, and doesn't have anything to do with elves, it's simply a latinization of "älvdalska", which is the Swedish word for the language. That word in turn comes from the area where it is spoken, älvdalen, which simply means "river valley". Secondly: Elfdalian isn't a "viking language", it's a descendent of old norse like all the other scandinavian languages. That is not to say that it isn't interesting or worth preserving, it absolutely is. It is very interesting linguistically as it combines aspects of old east norse (the ancestor of Swedish and Danish) and old west norse (the ancestor of Norwegian and Icelandic). Elfdalian also preserves some features that have since disappeared from the other scandinavian languages, one example is that it has three grammatical genders instead of the two in Swedish. Thirdly: People aren't "trying to revive the language in hopes of bringing back viking culture", rather they're trying to preserve their traditional regional language/dialect Fourthly: Describing Elfdalian as almost being "wiped out" is overly dramatic, especially with the accompanying images. The video makes it seem like it's the result of some bloody struggle, when reality is a lot more dry. Elfdalian isn't officially recognized as a minority language in Sweden but rather considered a dialect of Swedish. This means that schools won't teach elfdalian but "standard" Swedish. This, in addition to increased linguistic homogenization across Sweden due to increased movement and mass media, causes people to stop using and learning Elfdalian. (Also I can almost 100% guarantee that the viking reenactors on screen when the video talks about keeping the language alive aren't from Älvdalen) Fifthly: The video states that Elfdalian is "radically different from Swedish", as if it were an undisputed fact. I'd disagree. I'll leave the exact distinction between language and dialect to the linguists, but it is clear that Elfdalian and "standard" Swedish are related, closely enough for some to consider Elfdalian a Swedish dialect. From the short example in the video I (a Swedish speaker from Västergötland) can understand most of what is said, loosely translated to : "..here we would want to, by the grace of God, sit with..."

Not really, you should listen too old Swedish,norwegian or old Danish. Its hugd difference between Finnish & old norse since these languages arent related as Scandinavien & rest of the Germanic language etc.
As older Sweden as exemple had alot of word that is same & similar. many words in Swedish is loan words & couple worfs in English is loan word from old norse. Like finnsh has loan words from Swedish, which could make it sounds or seems like it could be some relation with old norse, but they just simple use loan words from Sweden, since Finland had been under Swedish rule for about 700y.
Älvdalska is basically old Norse but more like a accent aka cousins to rest of the old Norse community. They have been around same time period as nosrmens in southern part of Scandinavia, and have spooky the language since than until today, but only about 3k speak it, sadly.

Preserving Scandinavian culture is great, associating it with Viking culture is probably not a part of that. If it is, I can think of a few world powers who would have something to say about that.
Modern swedish have evolved very much since we spoke old norse but i can hear many similarities between old norse/swedish and elf dalian. Also the place were they speak elf dalian is more western in sweden closer to the norweigan border and therefore they have a another dialect.

Being a “Vikingr” in Norse society meant you were a sea farer. You were one of the people Who went in expeditions whether to raid, explore, expand etc etc. Not all medieval Northmen were vikingr. Using the word “viking” as a way to describe all pre-Christian Norse people only started happening after the Viking age.

I’m Swedish and grew up in Dalarna the same county as Älvdalen where they speak älvdalska (elf dalian). It’s an old dialect that has been preserved as many other old dialects is because of segregation before it was easier to travel around. The dialect is not to hard for a regular swedish speaker to understand. And what I know are they not trying to kick start the Viking culture with it, it’s just an old unique dialect.

The Norse spoke Old Norse. The closest language we have today is Icelandic. Many of us speak Icelandic. Elfdalian is very very conservative and was only a small spoken dialect even of its day. It developed due to isolation, but because of this it developed in ways that then seperated it from the other germanic languages that stem from Old Norse. Icelandic on the otherhand kept up before it was isolated. Once isolated it then became essentially frozen in time and is so close to Old Norse that I can read much of the original translations of sagas. I can not however understand Elfdalian. Both languages did keep some parts of the Old Norse root. Icelandic kept the Proto-Germanic voiceless sonorants, and interdental fricatives. Elfdalian kept the Proto-Germanic nasal vowels. Elfdalian does not have the vowel shifts that Icelandic has though.

also, take English for example. Modern Day English today. The furthest back in time you could go and still have a half decent conversation would be around 1554. Past that point, no one could understand you.

Agreed ! I’m married to an Icelander and I think Icelandic sounds Elvish like from The Lord Of The Rings. Icelanders have a better understanding of Old English literature as well as old Swedish texts that are 800 years old. Icelanders can understand them better than a modern day Swede or a modern day Englishman because their Icelandic language hasn’t changed much and has been well preserved since the time of the Viking Era in medieval Europe
Elf Salian is not a Viking language. No Vikinger ever spoke it. It is a modern north Germanic language that developed FROM the language of the Vikings, the same as Swedish danish and Norwegian

1. I'm a little lost on the hype? Elfdallion is around as old, maybe slightly older, than Icelandic. It's not exactly super impressive in it's age, even moreso when you consider that their were different dialects of the Norse language throughout Scandinavia. So, while this language MIGHT have been spoken by our favorite raiders and traders, so were a bunch of other dialects and even other languages. 2. No, it sounds nothing like Tolkienian elvish. They have entirely different linguistic forms and inspirations. Elfdallion is derived from old Norse whereas Quenyan from Lotr is inspired by Welsh. The language of the Eotheod (Rohan) is inspired by Old English, so Norse adjacent but still different enough that it doesn't sound similar. The closet you get is the dwarves language but that really only does so far as naming conventions.

Back in the 1000s, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian were dialects, not separate languages. Even today, they are fairly mutually understandable, at least if the listeners have experience with the others, much like oral Flemish wrt Dutch.

Probably easier for you, if you learn Swedish first as a stepping stone - fortunately it's fairly easy for English speaking people to learn Swedish, since there are many deep similarities with the basic vocabulary of English ( like a "mysteriously" parallel world of an older English WITHOUT the peculiar use of "do" and "-ing" with verbs ) as well as several similar grammatical features - and you would even "get" Danish & Norwegian as well almost for free ( just with slightly different spellings, different pronounciations and tonalities, essentially the same grammars in most important respects and then a few different words here and there , which will often be understandable anyway from their constituents and from the context. These words could potentially be Swedish words as well, or they even used to exist in older Swedish - and vice versa.

Since, älvdalen is close to old norse and they was also the last one in the world to make runestones the old way, and have done it for centuries.
At least under the time period when my grandfathers, grandmothers loved their. Her ancestry have lived there since so far back as we can get from family track, from 1300/1400's until the 1800's.

In order to hopefully spread some actual information I thought it might be worthwhile to go through what this video gets wrong
Firstly: Elfdalian is one word, and doesn't have anything to do with elves, it's simply a latinization of "älvdalska", which is the Swedish word for the language. That word in turn comes from the area where it is spoken, älvdalen, which simply means "river valley".
Secondly: Elfdalian isn't a "viking language", it's a descendent of old norse like all the other scandinavian languages. That is not to say that it isn't interesting or worth preserving, it absolutely is. It is very interesting linguistically as it combines aspects of old east norse (the ancestor of Swedish and Danish) and old west norse (the ancestor of Norwegian and Icelandic). Elfdalian also preserves some features that have since disappeared from the other scandinavian languages, one example is that it has three grammatical genders instead of the two in Swedish.
Thirdly: People aren't "trying to revive the language in hopes of bringing back viking culture", rather they're trying to preserve their traditional regional language/dialect
Fourthly: Describing Elfdalian as almost being "wiped out" is overly dramatic, especially with the accompanying images. The video makes it seem like it's the result of some bloody struggle, when reality is a lot more dry. Elfdalian isn't officially recognized as a minority language in Sweden but rather considered a dialect of Swedish. This means that schools won't teach elfdalian but "standard" Swedish. This, in addition to increased linguistic homogenization across Sweden due to increased movement and mass media, causes people to stop using and learning Elfdalian. (Also I can almost 100% guarantee that the viking reenactors on screen when the video talks about keeping the language alive aren't from Älvdalen)
Fifthly: The video states that Elfdalian is "radically different from Swedish", as if it were an undisputed fact. I'd disagree. I'll leave the exact distinction between language and dialect to the linguists, but it is clear that Elfdalian and "standard" Swedish are related, closely enough for some to consider Elfdalian a Swedish dialect. From the short example in the video I (a Swedish speaker from Västergötland) can understand most of what is said, loosely translated to : "..here we would want to, by the grace of God, sit with..."

I’m Swedish and grew up in Dalarna the same county as Älvdalen where they speak älvdalska (elf dalian). It’s an old dialect that has been preserved as many other old dialects is because of segregation before it was easier to travel around. The dialect is not to hard for a regular swedish speaker to understand. And what I know are they not trying to kick start the Viking culture with it, it’s just an old unique dialect.

The Norse spoke Old Norse. The closest language we have today is Icelandic. Many of us speak Icelandic. Elfdalian is very very conservative and was only a small spoken dialect even of its day. It developed due to isolation, but because of this it developed in ways that then seperated it from the other germanic languages that stem from Old Norse. Icelandic on the otherhand kept up before it was isolated. Once isolated it then became essentially frozen in time and is so close to Old Norse that I can read much of the original translations of sagas. I can not however understand Elfdalian. Both languages did keep some parts of the Old Norse root. Icelandic kept the Proto-Germanic voiceless sonorants, and interdental fricatives. Elfdalian kept the Proto-Germanic nasal vowels. Elfdalian does not have the vowel shifts that Icelandic has though.

Agreed ! I’m married to an Icelander and I think Icelandic sounds Elvish like from The Lord Of The Rings. Icelanders have a better understanding of Old English literature as well as old Swedish texts that are 800 years old. Icelanders can understand them better than a modern day Swede or a modern day Englishman because their Icelandic language hasn’t changed much and has been well preserved since the time of the Viking Era in medieval Europe

1. I'm a little lost on the hype? Elfdallion is around as old, maybe slightly older, than Icelandic. It's not exactly super impressive in it's age, even moreso when you consider that their were different dialects of the Norse language throughout Scandinavia. So, while this language MIGHT have been spoken by our favorite raiders and traders, so were a bunch of other dialects and even other languages.
2. No, it sounds nothing like Tolkienian elvish. They have entirely different linguistic forms and inspirations. Elfdallion is derived from old Norse whereas Quenyan from Lotr is inspired by Welsh. The language of the Eotheod (Rohan) is inspired by Old English, so Norse adjacent but still different enough that it doesn't sound similar. The closet you get is the dwarves language but that really only does so far as naming conventions.
Elfdalian is amazing, but it is not as unique as people think, it's very similar to the other Dalecarlian dialects in Ovansiljan, especially Våmhusmål.

Back in the 1000s, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian were dialects, not separate languages. Even today, they are fairly mutually understandable, at least if the listeners have experience with the others, much like oral Flemish wrt Dutch.

Probably easier for you, if you learn Swedish first as a stepping stone - fortunately it's fairly easy for English speaking people to learn Swedish, since there are many deep similarities with the basic vocabulary of English ( like a "mysteriously" parallel world of an older English WITHOUT the peculiar use of "do" and "-ing" with verbs ) as well as several similar grammatical features - and you would even "get" Danish & Norwegian as well almost for free ( just with slightly different spellings, different pronounciations and tonalities, essentially the same grammars in most important respects and then a few different words here and there , which will often be understandable anyway from their constituents and from the context. These words could potentially be Swedish words as well, or they even used to exist in older Swedish - and vice versa.
