Dude...this is absolute genius... I was shopping for a smoke machine, but I dont want to pay $700.00... You ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Video! Suggestions 1) Try using your shop vac without smoke first to see if your sink vents/toilet gurgle (vent) 2) A smaller shop vac will have less blower pressure in your vent system 3) Buy a "2 1/2" blast gate" from HD or amazon for $10 and use it on the shop vac outlet to reduce blower pressure to your vent stack 4) Install the Blast Gate to the Shop Vac Outlet, use adapters /carboard/Duct Tape as needed 5) Adjust the blast gate until the fixtures stop gurgling
To everyone worried about blowing out the traps, pick up a little $15 router speed control from Harbor Freight or Amazon and you'll have full control of that power! This build is AWESOME!
Hey thanks so much for this video. I used a spare wet dry vac and was able to test my sewer pipes for leaks. Works so well and didn't cost anything except the cost of the candles
Put a tee with a valve in front of elbow to moderate air pressure. Leave roof vents open until they blow smoke then tape them making sure you open valve in front of shop vac elbow so you dont blow toilets n traps.
Can you please explain a little bit more. As far as my understanding that you instructed you to put A tee on that 90 . and on that Tee on the other side equipped with an open and close valve to control air pressure? Why not just install a Tee and plug one into the vent and the other side of the tee is still blowing smoke and pressure out . The reason I'm asking is because I'm going to do the same route as the video above. Thank you for ur sharing.
IT doesn't. I tried, nothing came past it. If it does, your roof vents are clogged. You could also restrict shopvac intake a little to prevent too much air.
If your vents are working as they should it will not blow past the traps. I played with it and I could see the water rise a tiny bit but air would not get past toilets traps at all. If you do have it happen just block the shop vacs intake port with something. You could even buy one of the shopvac plugs and drill holes in it.

Can you do a test with out blocking roof vents as they are hard to get to. Mean roof pitch. Thanks

You have no idea how helpful this is. ❤

My idea confirmed, thanks!

Sweet, my first thought I didn't copy comments, lol, thanks for sharing....
Sweet! So simple and effective
This is amazing
Would it blow out the traps because of high pressure?
I have seen less blow out the traps wouldn't surprise me if they had to go back
Yes. It even blows all the water out of your toilets

which size fernco is that ? great video
can I use my 7 gallon ridgid "Plastic tank" shop vac instead of the Stainless.. and will use a coffee can inside?
Nice unit. Where do you get the candles
I been told those candles smoke will damadge fabric and art wallpaper... Is this an issue?
I doubt it for this short exposure.
Ingenious
genus
Is they too much pressure could it blow past the traps

Do you plug off the city side of the clean out when testing thanks
Tried this. All it does is blow all of the water out of the toilets & fill the house with smoke
Like others said, put a t-valve in line on the shopvac inlet and control how much air is pumped out (which goes into your sewer)
Copied my idea
Or, you know, buy a real one. But yours is good too.
600 bucks+ for a smoke machine is insane. This will cost you a little over 100. And you can use it as an actual shopvac as well. Superhandy
Nice work. For a full time plumber, I can see how this would be a great option. Or for a DIY homeowner, retrofit your own shop vac like you did here.
