    I loved “Letting Go”! Quote: “Escape is the avoidance of feelings through diversion. This avoidance is the backbone of the entertainment and liquor industries, and also the route of the workaholic. Escapism and avoidance of inner awareness is a socially condoned mechanism. We can avoid our own inner selves and keep our feelings from emerging by an endless variety of pursuits, many of which eventually become addictions as our dependency upon them grows. People are desperate to stay unconscious. We observe how often people flick on the television set the minute they enter a room and then walk around in a dream-like state, constantly being programmed by the data poured into them. People are terrified of facing themselves. They dread even a moment of aloneness. Thus the constant frantic activities: the endless socializing, talking, texting, reading, music playing, working, traveling, sightseeing, shopping, overeating, gambling, movie-going, pill-taking, drug-using, and cocktail-partying. Many of the foregoing mechanisms of escape are faulty, stressful, and ineffective."

      Great quote! It's so true that we generally engage in a lot of behaviors just as a way to distract ourselves from things we don't want to deal with or think about! And often we're not even conscious that we do it!
      Today more than ever you see it most with people's addiction to their phones! Most people can't take more than a few hours (if that) away from their phone without having anxiety. We're so used to being distracted and giving our attention away that we don't even notice we do it.

    I really enjoyed this video. It was super surprising for me to see that you are "only" at about 400 subscribers right now. The quality of the video was completely comparable to the big TH-camrs talking about self improvement. Keep up with making those great videos!

      Thanks for saying that! I appreciate it! I'm still pretty new to making TH-cam videos and this is my first video to even get over 1000 views haha, so I'm still in the growth phase for sure, so it's super cool to see people saying that they enjoy the quality and compare it to larger creators!

      Yeah it's so simple but so important! I have to re-read a few chapters every so often to keep it fresh in my mind

  • @Bluzephere

    Over a few months I ended up with all these books, first one I read was Letting Go. I did enjoy it but found it a bit heavy going at times. I think I need to read it again because even though the author says its simple to do, I still don't understand how to do it. The Untethered Soul, I just cannot get into it. I read a few chapters then go back and start again, so many people rave about how great this book is but I have a challenging time reading it.
    I have yet to read the others but I am getting to them.

    • @andrewvanhoff
      @andrewvanhoff  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find that those two books have taken me the longest to understand. The concepts they talk about are pretty strange at first.
      As time has gone on, I've had more "aha" moments from those two books in particular. I'll be reading another book, or watching a video, or doing something, and suddenly something clicks in the back of my mind and I'll understand how it connects to the things in those books.
      I'd suggest maybe reading Unstoppable Self Confidence if you haven't. It's written in super simple language and explains the basis of letting go, of your inner voice, of worthiness and ego - all things that are greatly expanded on in Letting Go and The Untethered Soul. I read that one first, and it helped me have a basic framework to understand what the followup books were actually talking about.
      Finally, I do have a video about the Letting Go process that might help a bit! th-cam.com/video/XrGvfzLzcAI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xM0TCHYqWhryRIEl

    1:19 Actually the next iteration from the simple distinction between fixed and growth mindset is to acknowledge the real worlds hard and soft limits but being aware that one has to focus on the things that can be changed to make the best out of it or even work around the limits.

    • @andrewvanhoff
      @andrewvanhoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right that there are of course, SOME hard limits that people have. But we tend to vastly underestimate ourselves when it comes to our potential. After all even Michael Jordan famously didn't make his highschool varsity team at first. But instead of interpreting that as a hard limit, as a lot of people with a fixed mindset would - he put in the effort to grow and practice as hard as possible.
      So I agree that the distinction might be oversimplified and natural limits certainly play SOME role in life. But I think we can often transform a lot more than we give ourselves credit for, if we actually believe we can and apply ourselves to the process.

      My goal with this channel is to share my experience and what's worked for me in terms of transforming my perspective and my life. It's always a process of course, but every little step counts, and I think it's really cool if I'm able to share something that actually impacts other people!
      Part of working through my own resistance and dark times has been the thought that maybe if I figured out a way to help myself through life, I could help make that journey easier for other people who are struggling.
      So it's always awesome to hear that people get something positive out of it, even if it's something small!

    • @andrewvanhoff
      @andrewvanhoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from the Northwestern US! And it's my pleasure! That's an awesome combo to start with! Atomic Habits was the first one I read on the list and that's where I really started to think about what I wanted/needed to start doing in my life to get the results I wanted. I actually glanced through the book the first time almost 3 years ago and never finished it - but even just glancing through it I decided to build a habit of working out and I went from basically never working out to building a habit of consistently working out 3-4x a week for the last 2+ years. And that was from me just glancing through it! When I went back through it at the start of the year I realized how many other applications it really has!
      Mindset is a great one to pair with atomic habits too because they both talk about the process of growth and learning through repetition and practice. I think they'll compliment each other really well!

    • @andrewvanhoff
      @andrewvanhoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's definitely valid haha! At a certain point they do start to get repetitive.
      I think there's probably a certain threshold of information that people need to attain from reading self-help or improvement books and then implementation becomes more important than more reading. More books and information can certainly help, but once you understand the basic principles, I think action is the most important thing!

      Very true! To be fair, most of the books stress this point too. But it's really easy to get into the habit of reading a bunch of books for information and never actually DOING anything. At which point they're basically just entertainment. Action steps are key!

That might help with your ability to negotiate more work for yourself and stand out from the crowd!

      It's a valid criticism! I think it's more to do with the tight angle of the shot. If my full body were in frame, it would seem more natural and my hands wouldn't constantly be popping in and out of frame.
