Ammonia poisoning is a common problem in fish tanks that can have severe consequences for the health and well-being of aquatic inhabitants. It often occurs when ammonia levels in the tank become too high, posing a significant threat to fish such as bettas, goldfish, guppies, and clownfish, as well as other aquatic creatures like shrimp and axolotls.
Ammonia (NH3) is a toxic substance produced from the breakdown of organic waste, uneaten fish food, and fish excrement. In a well-established aquarium, beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrites (NO2-) and then into nitrates (NO3-), which are less harmful. However, when the tank is not properly cycled or the biological filter is insufficient, ammonia levels can rise, leading to toxicity.
High ammonia levels can cause burns and inflammation in fish, particularly affecting their gills. This can result in respiratory distress and a range of symptoms such as gasping for air, lethargy, loss of appetite, and abnormal swimming patterns. Ammonia poisoning can also impact a fish's brain, leading to disorientation and potential neurological damage.
To fix ammonia issues in a fish tank, it's crucial to test the ammonia levels regularly using an aquarium test kit. If the levels are high, immediate action should be taken to treat the water. The first step is to perform partial water changes, replacing a portion of the water with dechlorinated water. This helps dilute the ammonia concentration and remove some of the toxins.
In addition to water changes, it's important to address the root cause of the ammonia problem. This involves establishing and maintaining a proper nitrogen cycle in the tank. To initiate the nitrogen cycle, beneficial bacteria need to colonize the tank's filter media and substrate. Adding a bacterial starter or using filter media from an established aquarium can help speed up the cycling process.
Ammonia removers or neutralizers can also be used to bind and detoxify ammonia temporarily. These products can provide a short-term solution while working on fixing the underlying issue. However, they are not a permanent fix and should be used in conjunction with other measures to address ammonia toxicity effectively.
To prevent ammonia poisoning, it's essential to avoid overstocking the tank, overfeeding the fish, or failing to maintain regular tank maintenance. Testing the water parameters regularly, including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and temperature, will help ensure a healthy environment for your aquatic pets.
If a fish shows signs of ammonia poisoning or ammonia burns, prompt action should be taken. Isolate the affected fish in a separate, clean tank or container with pristine water conditions. Increase aeration and consider adding aquarium salt (only for species that tolerate it) to support the fish's recovery and promote healing.
Remember, preventing ammonia poisoning is crucial for the overall well-being of your fish and other tank inhabitants. Regular maintenance, proper cycling, and responsible fishkeeping practices will help maintain healthy water conditions and minimize the risk of ammonia-related issues in your aquarium. how betta get rid deal remover wont go down rat guppy cure biochemistry sickness diseases neutralizer control axolotl anhydrous inflamed intoxication eating dangerous what do burn poison

Honestly, it can be due to various reasons. Primarily due to tank condition or swim bladder. We have video already in channel about why betta stay at one place. Hope you find that helpful. Add your comment there for any further help. Hope she will recover soon.
