- In this video I demonstrate a home-built, portable, gold-extraction shaker table for field use. I mix fine gold with black beach sand and extract it using the table. The results are presented.
Here's a link to a SketckUp drawing. It's approximate and does not reflect my current thinking on the best design. The rubber mat is not the same as the one used in the video. Please use it as a rough guide only.

Your video is the most enjoyable I’ve seen in ages... I just want to find some gold in my creek here in a very Geothermal region between Cobb Mt And Mt St Helena called Anderson Springs. I’ve got property with no cabin since the Valley Fire, with the deepest pool on bedrock that erosion has changed 8 seasons in a row, after virtually no change in my 65 yrs. grandpa built the cabin as his escape from grandma in the 29s and 30s...I had to make it my home in 2010. Grandpa found quite a bit while building the cabin and swore to me that I would find the secret ...I was 10! He told me in my 60s. I’m 65, and want to rebuild that simple life. Living in a Toy hauler is fine, but it’s a bit too tight, and I can’t have my trailer on my property without a dwelling. Gotta luv Lake Co Code Enforcement! My 39k had to be spent on renting in a tiny RV PARK,...That was NIT MY PLAN, lol ...such is life! Before I lose my vision completely, I want to have fun trying to chase a little dream. Pretty Slick! I had a rubber mat for flooring in a truck that i could modify . It had very small ribs across it. If I had something like a shaving razor to remove some ribs it would work real nice! I would have two batteries and charge them with a solar cell setup to swap out when I needed to.

hey man just wanted to stop by and say nice table. i like the extras you did for the battery pack and all too its not a bad idea at all. if you decide to do a box for ac power for when your home you can always just use fan controllers from lowes menards home depot. or if you like your own wiring you can use rheostats aka dimmer switches if you didnt know.
also as for the flexors. look into scooter parts gy6 50cc or the 150cc the parts are dirt cheap and you can use their torque drive or clutch springs for your base. the 50cc stuff is pretty strong the 150cc is really strong and the 2 stroke stuff is inbetween. they may be a bit bouncier than the flat stock but will last forever and move more fluidly.

What kind of motor mount did you use please? Looks like either delrine or a 3D printed mount. Looks like it would absorb some of the shock from the acentric coupler. Thanks
I bought that motor from amazon, I think, and it came with the motor mount. I've made other motor mounts out of Aluminum plate, Delrin, etc. They all work.

cool build, If going to the desert, I would take something that concentrates and does more production, then bring back the cons to your machine. It will not do as much production running desert material as you expect, i don't believe. I make concentrators, on my other channel, that would do much more production, Spike's prospecting Equipment! Great build and details! I mold ABS parts!
Yeah, you could be right. I have a few days off next week to check it out in the desert. I'll take the machine with me but I'll leave it at the cabin. I'll collect some classified material from various locations and run it through the machine in the evening. Great to know that you mold ABS! Thanks.

Very interesting! I am curious about how much design you put into the shaking action itself? The asymmetrical gearing you show should produce an equal-speed back-and-forth shaking of the deck, but I feel there is huge potential in designing a shaking motion that is fast in one direction and slow in the other. Something akin to tapping a pan? I am only theorizing here, though. Thoughts?
Hi Kristian. Yes, I agree, there is some potential here for innovation. I'm trying several other methods of moving the table with more of an impulsive force. Asymmetry is the key. Thanks for the comment.
As long as the center of the motor axle is offset from the pivot point on the table, there is some difference in motion forward and back due to the geometry. It will move faster in one direction.
We've been beach mining in Nome Alaska for more than 10 years. We've developed several iterrations of a 12 vot portable mini-sluice for prospecting. Always looking for something better and faster. Your demonstration is very interesting. I admire your ability as a craftsman. I am not capable of building such a fine machine. How about a simpler solution? Have you thought about using an acoustic speaker and a vfo to drive the vibration?
That is quite an interesting idea! Yes, the idea with a sluice is to keep the material in a state of partial liquefaction, and the acoustically-induced vibration should do that. I'll give it a try. Sound like fun. -- Dave

I think the fine gold vs the sand and heavies is still not within the same "scale" though. For full separation you can't have a gold particle smaller than 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the largest heavy and the 1/3 is really pushing it. Try running it with classified material within this size ratio and tune water for that and I think you will be surprised.

I get to go to a goldcamp two times a year tops, and it's a 4 day stay with a 16 hour roundtrip.
Built my own vortex matting and classifying sluice though, and it works a treat.
The classification is really important to allow the shaking and water to handle the particles differently. Since gold is 19.3g/ml while the heaviest sulfides and black sand is up to maybe 7g/ml (tin sulfide 5.3, lead sulfide 7.6, hematite 5.26 and pure iron 7.8) a round-ish particle twice the diameter of a gold particle starts to act the same. Any larger difference and it's a random game of bounce the particles.
I've always been pondering some sort of screen system on a shaker table to automatically screen the material into very tight classifications so they can drop on different regions of the table with correct waterflow to separate perfectly. Would be beautiful to watch.

Could you put a run above the bar with a wet hopper at the top to do a constant small feed onto your current loading zone while you load the hopper twice as much but in intervals? (If that makes sense)
Yeah, totally makes sense and that's how I'd run it in mini-production mode.
Finally a shaker table I could easily fit in the space my wife lets me have in the dog house 😯
Would you mind describing the neoprene mat you used?
Does the mat material have a big influence due to surface structure?
Example: Rubber can be very fine grain, neoprene can be rough (rough doesn’t mean bad per se, we all worked our pans for a reason).

Yes, the surface texture of the mat does make a difference, especially in the grooves. I finish the grooves with fine sand paper for this reason. I use simple neoprene mat, 1/4" thick.

I myself just cannot work out a suitable design.

The rubber mat is made from Neoprene, 1/4" thick. It's available from Rubber Sheet Warehouse. -- Dave
Why is the battery voltage 8 volts? I thought the motor you are using 12 volts? Thoughts? Thanks
Hi Dennis, Both the pump and the motor are 12V devices, but I use the voltages to them to adjust the rate of water flow and the rate of shaking of the table. So, I typically run the pump at 8V and the table at 14V. That gives the best overall performance. -- Dave

Hi Patrick, The grooves are 2 mm deep and 6 mm wide, spaced between 12 mm and 18 mm, depending on your preferences. -- Dave

What about putting two shaker tables in a diamond configuration but with two feeds?
That should work but be aware that the load on the motor and springs will change. Some experimentation will be necessary. -- Dave

Gold wire bonds are difficult for a shaker table because of the large surface area.

its funny how some feed from right to left and others from left to right ,, i guess it depends on your transport and your space .. where your water catch basin will be -- otherwise it shouldnt matter witch direction, though it seems many i have seem tend to go from input on the left and output on the right ... wifleys ...
i luv the simpliicity of the drive action .. no fancey metal works, just a simple wood pivot and rotator .. just about as simple and cheap and effective as one can get ...ez to make , ez to replace / upgrade ..

Hello. This is a demonstration unit. I don't plan on selling equipment, sorry.
Not trying to pic shit, just give you a heads up and tell you Aluminium will work harden so it will crack, you can either change to stainless steel or just keep replacing all 4 of the Aluminium if you see one crack, but I would take some with you at all times because you know it will happen while your away from home.
Hi Gavin, I've switched to Garolite for the flexures. Garolite is a trade name for epoxy-fiberglass and should last more than the life of the table. It works very well. You can see it in action in my latest table video.
@@orophilia Yep just watched it, I know bugger all about epoxy-fiberglass so was going to keep my mouth shut. Metal is what I have worked with for 40 years, I saw something that could be a problem and gave you a heads up, I glad you found something better.

Why milligrams man wtf
If I understand your question, you're asking why I use only 50-100 mg of gold. Well, that's more than enough to get the job done. I'd rather use less because that would be more representative of the actual concentrations that we mine. At 10 ppm, using one kilogram of beach sand, we would expect to get 10 mg of gold. In the end, it's just a test of the efficacy of the table.

There is for "average" person almost no chance to build a really working shaker table for fine Gold .....
Why .....?!
The physics and behavior of concentrate melange with fine Gold is ( and that with a obviously simpel
gravitation influence ) so difficult ,- that it needs a real S-table design ( even there with preparation of
the material) to separate the Gold in ONE "strike" !
These table comes with quiet some costs !!
It will help to read the "bible" of "Mineral Dressing" ( Taggart) ....... ( 1000 pages)
But to the next disappointment ..... there is no majorwise news since 1954 ......
We watch Jason for a while ... and his table have a different setting then yours .....
And obviously not even on the point ....
He is realy good in his work ( may we try to arrange a meeting at his place ..... will see )
Your handicraft is good ....so the critics are all around the principle of the hydro mechanical execution ..
The details are not easy ,- and easy to build .....
Your assumption ,- with the aluminum "spring" support , is not correct in the way of purpose ....as an
example .... it is way more to it .......unfortunately 🤥😪

Hi Rigel and the Team. Can you please give me more information about who you are and what interesting stuff you're working on? The table that I built works well in certain situations and not in others. I don't think either of us are surprised by that. I've been able to separate gold particles down to 250 microns (60 mesh) from black sand and heavy sulfides using the table, but recovery rates drop for gold particles smaller than that. Of course, it also depends on how the table is set up and used, and how aggressive the separation is. As you know, I don't manufacture the tables nor do I claim that others should make one. I don't understand your statement about the Aluminum flexures (springs). It works as I've demonstrated. The shaking rate, shaking amplitude and water flow rate and distribution are quite important.

You know the different of a Holman table and a Wilfley table ?
It have something to do , with the stroke ,- the deck surface ,- speed and angle ......
We can handle ,- as an example,- 230 mesh = 0.063 mm ( 63 micron) pretty easy ..... in one work process ...( means ... the Gold is meltable ,- and can be poored..... )

@@rigel1176 I know both tables. The Holman table uses a sawtooth waveform and the Wilfley is more sinusoidal. There is a company in the UK called Holman Wilfley. Their products look quite decent. I'd love to know how to make a table that handles 50 micron gold. Thanks! -- Dave
