  • We buy a premium Thule VeloCompact 927 bike carrier that fits onto the car's tow ball. It's good, but is it that good?

    Thule recommends to put the lock bar for the second bike when the first one is set up. They also recommends to put the lock underneath the bike frame not from the top.
    Thank for the video.

    I was waiting for the part where you fit the number plate... Thanks for the video and some great comments here. Waiting to get my towbar fitted so I can use it!

    We have a similar carrier but it's manufactured by Witter. You may find it easier to put the larger bikes nearer the vehicle, threading the arms of the rack through the triangle of the bike frame to reach the outer bikes.

    Mine wouldn’t fit/lock on the ball of the tow bar without taking that plastic shroud off either. Thanks for the great tip.

    Hi, I have just bought one of these racks. Halfords, best price I could find. Research was a pain. Halfords shop and online were vague about its ability to tilt. Thule site was the same. Took a chance. Problem, tow bar was not compatible. Securing mechanism needs a certain "height" clearance to properly clamp to the ball. New tow bar bought. Success. Lights working, bikes fitted. Problem, the lovely restraining /locking bar clamps supplied can't cope with the tubular dimensions of an electric bike. I have a "Trek rail" They also don't line up when you have several or in my case two bikes on the rack. Picking a "suitable length" and threading them through tubes and bars will be frustrating. The three retention bars look nice but are too ridgid and would have been more practical if they were flexible. I also question the build quality of the unit. As I just don't believe that it will survive the rigours of a heavy MTB when I am tired in wet, dark conditions. It's also a sizeable investment. Would I recommend it? Despite the price and the fitting difficulties. Yes I would. No one else makes anything else to match it.

    First: on the box are no instructions how to open the box and the manual has no text, so thanks to your video, i know how to get it done :-)

    Good review. Have u compare this to Yakima justclick? Is this velocompact able to carry three adult bikes?

    The "backpipebar" is not in place at the video , it should be in totaly lower position , and its not , it can bend backwards and its dangerous.

    Thanks for the video. I'd have loved to see you attaching the license plate to the rack, as that's the bit I'm struggling with.

      There are a number of plastic clips that are part of the number plate assembly . They have to be removed and re-clipped in the appropriate slots for the number plate . No details of this in the manual which is surprising . It’s works really well for holding a standard sized number plate.

    • @aminbazdeep6417
      @aminbazdeep6417 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nicholas, check the plate area and you need to remove the three small rotating / rectangular plates from the carrier. They are actually designed to be broken off. Once you do that just place your number plate in position and it becomes obvious how you refit the three small rectangular plates back into their corresponding holes to lock the plate in.

      Hmm.. Possibly. You'll need to play around with the different length arms to make sure it reaches the frame properly.

    Is the 19 cm bike spacing on this bike carrier a practical issue in terms of keeping the bikes separated ? It seems like most competing carriers use 25 cm.

    • @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
      @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think it is an issue.
      We've just upgraded my lad's bike to a bigger one, and now I find I can only fit two adult bikes on there, not 3.
      I did manage to fit two adults and large child's bike, but despite using rags to wrap and protect, it took some paint of my new bike (not happy!). So, I think this is OK, for taking an adult and some children's bikes, but not 3 adult bikes.
      I've also found the arms don't work well with adult bikes on there and had to come up with a strange arrangement to get them to go through the frame.

    Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)

      Check the total weight of your e-bike & other bikes and find rack that support that total weight. Most racks support total of 60kg, regardless if they are for 2, 3 or 4 bikes.

    I also have the Velocompact and some people point out that the "U" bracket/ bar seems to be mounted wrong, it moves when it shouldn't. I'm close to the point where I want to send the thing back to amazon. Even if I tighten the plastic nobs to the point where my hands hurt, it still moves when I tilt the rack with 2 bike on it and the bikes tilt on each other. I'm afraid this can also happen during a journey. Anyone have any tips?

    • @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
      @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't remember if they are self-tightening screws/bolts on those plastic knobs. Might be worth checking everything is mounted around the correct way.

      push the U bracket into the hole properly before trying to tighten the screws. When i push it in nicely it is very sturdy and firm.

    Does anyone know how much of a hit you take with mpg, I have roof ones at the minute and my mpg just drop quite significantly

    • @BEN10TO10
      @BEN10TO10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had a tow bar mounted bike rack for years and yes unfortunately when in use there is an impact on mpg as you are effectively destroying the aerodynamic profile of the car. I don't mind, as its the price I pay for having the bikes on holiday or away for the weekend.

    There appears to be a design flaw with these racks in that there is only one bolt on each side holding the vertical in place. This is apparent when the person tilts the rack back with the bikes on it. In practical terms, this means that on journeys when there are wind forces acting on the bikes, they start to slip backwards and end up at 45 degrees as the vertical bar is not held upright, it just pivots on the bolt. this could be easily remedied by having one more bolt on each side tho prevent pivoting until you want to fold the bike rack away.
    I don’t believe it is dangerous per se, it just looks it.
