Fonn Na Saoirse - Melody of Freedom ‘Sí an Ghaeilge fonn na saoirse - Irish language is what freedom sounds like. “until we have it again on our tongues and in our minds we are not free” Michael Collins - The Path To Irish Freedom.
I’m learning Gaeilge it will be in my heart and tongue and when I have children they will speak it. I’m saving for my trip to my heart home Ireland 🇮🇪 and my ancestors home. That I Adore 🥰
Dia daoibh. Is francach agus ta me ag foghlaim na gaeilge. Is aoibhinn liom an teanga seo agus ta dochas orm labhair leis aon eirennach. Nil mo chuid gaeilge an maith ach oibraim é gach la. Nollaig shona daoibh.
If anyone is wondering thos actually translates to sound of freedom they comeptly changed the story its telling its telling the story of how the brittish tried to kill the Gaelic language all together by enslaving the Irish and I find thet beautiful thet you are telling this story in the irish native tongue you heve brought me to tears
My Irish is a little rusty but here's what I think the English translation is for those wondering. It seems like the words are about the time Ireland fought for freedom from the UK: The calm silence falls down, All around me once again. The words in my head were so sweet. They're now silent but I still remember. And the dream, That would always prevail, It's distant now. Where is the desire for freedom? Enemies came from overseas, To seek the darkness in the light. Not a nation for you are not real. “Go to hell or go to Connacht.” They seek to destroy, Our spirit and to suppress, Our identity. Extinguishing the desire for freedom. But there were voices that still remained, That stood bravely for their rights. For they'd never bow for any king. For they'd never live under him. Rising up, And out of the danger. Giving their lives, For the desire of freedom. But we will be silent no more. Our voices must be heard. Tired of this old heartache, Aching to end the embarrassment. Forever speaking out the words, That we are free, Forever true. And we sing a song, Of Freedom.
@Clara J Go raibh maith agat! D’fhoghlaim mé Gaeilge ar scoil. Ach tá sé 2 bhliain ó mo dheimhniú fágála. Shíl mé nach raibh mé chomh maith agus a bhí mé ach táim sásta go dtuigim cuid de fós. Mar a deir siad: Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.
I'm learning Irish Gaelic, and I recognised some of the words. I am learning because my ancestry is only two generations back we are Irish! I really appreciate that the Irish is shown on screen so I can learn to recognise the words to the sound. I loved this song. Made my heart stir. You can take the person out of Ireland but you can never take Ireland out of the person.
I'm currently learning the language so thank so much for making these songs! It makes it so much easier to learn when I have something modern to reference and listen to.
As a learner of Irish, seeing the words is great because it shows me which patterns to look for to see if a letter is voiced or if it signifies a broad or slender consonant. Go raibh maith agat!
I am Irish and I moved to Australia as a kid. it makes me sad that I can’t understand most of the words and sentences of this song, but I think if I study the language just a tiny bit it will all become clear.
I'm English but my dads Irish and I've been learning recently, I'd really suggest the app Duolingo, it's fantastic, it can also be accessed from PC. Tá ag fóghliam an Gaeilge, agus is maith liom è! I'm learning Irish and I like it!

Hi Touie, most states have *some* people studying or running courses or conversation meetups. Usually there are formal classes in NSW (several places), Victoria (Melbourne, Geelong), SA (Adelaide) & WA (Perth). Here in Melbourne we’ve been doing a couple of video classes during lockdown and hope to keep one going after.
It is just perfect. So damned heartfelt, and haunting. The lyrics is just heartbreaking, especially nowadays. Gawd, who the heck is chopping onions everytime I listen to it?!

Stunningly stirring...incredibly beautiful and evocative...igniting freedom's fierce fire within the heart and the soul. Far beyond the inadequate expression of my words...
Kudos on this translation/remixed adaptation. Not only is it well written and sung, but the sounds of the words flow together in such a satisfying way as well. Love it! Go raibh maith agat!
Someone translated these lyrics somewhere in the comment section. It amounts to the history of the English attempting to erase the language. "to hell or to Connaught" refers to Cromwell forcing the Irish west or to be killed. Throughout the song they remind us that even though a few brave souls rescued the language, it is still alive. Try Duolingo it's free and is very good for starting to learn Irish/Gaeilge.
That was absolutely breathtaking.... Brought tears to my eyes... This has been a favorite song of mine since I was a child.... And very rarely do I come across a cover that floors me.... Well done, well done. *Puts on repeat*
Merry Christmas 🌲 and it warms the hearts of Ireland to know the suffering endured has been heard all over the globe. A nation's desire that couldn't be tamed. A desire for freedom ☘️🇮🇪☘️
It took this English speaker a moment to realise that the lyrics had been changed - 'Fonn na Saoirse' translates as 'Sound of Freedom' rather than 'Sound of Silence'
I love the line “‘g iarra’ dubh a chuir ‘na gheal.” Even though “geal,” or light, is a different word from “Gael,” which refers to the Gaelic people of Ireland, Scotland, and Isle of Man, I like to think there was a subtle hidden meaning. “Wanting to turn the darkness into light,” vs the pseudo-pun “Wanting to turn the wicked into The Gael.” Remember though that “dubh” here doesn’t mean the literal color black. Like in English, I understand that “dubh” can take abstract meanings, like “darkness”, “wickedness”, “the unknown”, or other concepts like that. I’m not an expert of Irish. Nílim ach dalta na Gaeilge, ach bhí mé ag gáire a smaoineamh ar rud haha.
I am not sure I'd say more, it's definitely moving in either language. I'd say it's about equal. Least this performance, Disturbed and the original. I think it's because of their voices.

I was wondering about that. I knew Saoirse means freedom, liberty in Ghaeilge. This version sounds way better then the original imo.
It would be helpful to those of us learning Gaeilge to see the English lyrics side by side.
