Oh wow, this might be what happened with my old Medion laptop. It no longer turned on. Whenever I plugged the charger in, the "Dual-Channel Synchronous DC-DC Step-Down Controller
with 5V/3.3V LDOs" chip was getting extremely hot. 19V seemed to be up everywhere it was meant to be, but no 3.3V or 5V anywhere. As stated in the video, I made the mistake of assuming the chip was responsible for the fault. I noticed that a cap that's right next to the super IO is connected to ground on both sides. I'm guessing that's not right.
The board is unfortunately not repairable due to my attempts to try and fix it. It is interesting to know what the likely cause of the fault is though. I always wondered what would make that chip get extremely hot whenever a charger was plugged in. This video certainly answered that question.

Exactly how it went for me on the x421ia. And weirdly it also takes ~300ma and overheats. Someone tried to unplug the battery from the mobo and ripped the connector from the board that's how it most likely died. I realized that while testing (plugin the power), the safety features of the 3.3V/5V regulator will not always trigger and can lead you the wrong way.

Stupid question: At first we think it is the first chip because it is hot, but then the output is shorted and this is the super IO chip the problem because it is hot. Could it be that one output of the super IO is shorted as well and make us think that the super IO is dead? To make sure that the super IO is REALLY dead, we could desolder it completely (removing any potential output shortage) and inject 3.3v to see if it is still consuming 200-500mAh, right? Otherwise we are not 100% sure it is dead.

Sorin, I had this EXACT issue with my grandson's MSI Prestige 15 gaming laptop. While replacing the LCD panel after it was damaged, I screwed up and shorted the battery connection while trying to unplug it (boneheaded mistake on my part, I know better than to use a flathead screwdriver to leverage a stuck connector when I had a plastic spudger nearby). Sure enough, it killed the laptop. I bought him another laptop and have had this one on the bench as a passion project, LOL. When I powered it up, that same TI LDO regulator showed up on my thermal camera as red hot, and the VREG3 pin showed as shorted to ground. Thinking that was the fault, I removed the LDO, only to realize the VREG3 pad was still shorted -- so it wasn't the chip itself. I'm still poking around looking for shorted MOSFETS and caps, but without a schematic it's really hard to visually trace on this motherboard given the black solder mask and the extremely fine traces. And I don't have a good microscope yet (just a little digital one). This one isn't water damaged and as far as I can tell the SIO is fine, but will be sure to double check it now.
Am also interested in seeing how you reprogram the replacement SIO.

One of services told me buy IO chip to replace but seller said that we need to update BIOS for it to work. But point is i cant boot my laptop bios :(

Sorin, why do you use a flammable liquid to test for shorts instead of using a safe Rosin Atomizer Short Circuit Detector. I'm not questioning your testing methods but safety is safety. I saw in one of of your videos where the liquid caught fire.

I dont understand why Sorin thinks there is no bios chip. It has a bios chip (8MB)
    - As someone also mentioned. There seems to be a possible cracked cap at 4:19
My guess is he bought Successor (new) or Vertyanov (and not SVOD3/4)

Bridge them two chip terminals to the tracks incase its high resistance? Could you cut the track and test the chip so you don’t have to remove anything maybe something on that track is making it draw current? Just some thoughts 🙄

How do I deal with a super IO that works sometimes and does not work sometimes. Its a pain to get my laptop to boot. But once it boots I runs fine for days.
To get it to boot. I need to pull out the bios bat. Then hold down a key. To drain power as per lenovo support. Then plug in my power. Sometimes it boots. Sometimes it starts to boot and then the power button LED just flashes.
I have tried with hard disk without hard disk / cd / change the ram/ changed the hard disk.
Its worst when the moisture content is over 80%. I have removed all the goo from tape used on the mother board. Only thing left for me to try is to pull the mother board and wash it in ISO.

  • @SidneyCritic

I thought the SIO was just a dumb IC, ie, connect what you want, not programable control. I can't find a datasheet to check, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if he can program one.

  • @jonathaningram4672

It's a Lenovo lol. I have Asus x401a with the 30 minute off issue, something to do with the bios, I've tried flashing the bios and it kills it, I flashed it with the x5 series and it works but useless due to casing and keyboard. Never found a bios for what I've got that actually works beyond the 30 minute mark. All thermals have been checked plus fan, so overheating is not the problem, there is a countdown timer that kills the laptop exactly 30 minutes.

@@jonathaningram4672 it once happened on a notebook that came to me, it was upgraded to a core i3 from a pentium processor of the same generation and same socket but the chipset of the motherboar is hardcoded by intel to not accept core processors and thus its shutsdown exactly after 30 min and no more seconds. Yes, its the usual bullshit that comes from intel. Try the old processor and let us now

Which also means that if this laptop had windows license and it's special hwID number, mac, feature byte in HP laptops - it's now gone forever. I really don't get why manufacturers try to push BIOS inside KBC instead of using SOC8 package chip. I am very interested if this chip would still be somehow readable or is it really toasted? Some follow up video Sorin? Best KBC programmer I know is SVOD but that toy is pricy. If there are other cheaper replacements maybe someone will be willing to share some knowledge? I don't do boards with KBC, for most jobs my TL866 is more than enough especially for some canon printers but I haven't found cheaper alternative to svod and for I haven't found extra funds to buy this toy. I want it though.

yeah it is really annoying when I find "junk" 8th gen or newer HP laptops, they constantly try to join domain in Win10/11 because Azure uses HWID which is saved in PCH/KBC, which sometimes I get lucky and HP factory CMD lets me change the HWID but not always for some reason....
