    Top tip: know the A, Am, A7, E, Em, E7 shapes, understand the CAGED system (the concept of root notes), memorize the notes on the low E and A string and you have yourself 20-30 chords at your disposal.

    • @alec187
      @alec187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      tony montana yeah, you eventually get to a slightly higher than intermediate level and you would have to break off of the caged system. But as far as understanding the neck of the guitar in a beginner level, CAGED is very helpful.

    • @AmyReeve3639

      But if you take them simple chords and play then with a barre you can then explore the fret board and make something way more interesting but you are still pretty much using those same chords you have already learnt.

      Why/how do you think you stopped appreciating it like you once did? Do you just feel you’ve learned everything you want to learn and there’s no more achievements or new perspectives on aspects of playing/music in general? I’ve been playing on and off for just over 10 years, and maybe just because I didn’t challenge myself enough in the past or was too self taught, but I still find myself learning new things, discovering new sounds and aspects of sound/tone that can be manipulated and tell stories.
      Until about a year ago I almost exclusively played covers, mostly simple chord progressions and rhythm guitar parts. But now I almost exclusively write my own music and discovering how to craft a melody and change progressions, rhythm etc has given me a new appreciation for how vast the span of sounds you can create with a guitar (and my voice) is.

    I think its best for a beginner to learn the I ii iii IV V vi chords (Nashville numbering) in four keys.
    A capo gets you to many other keys.
    Key of Cmaj C Dm Em F G Am
    Key of Gmaj G Am Bm C D Em
    Key of Dmaj D Em F#m G A Bm
    Key of Amaj A Bm C#m D E F#m
    That's 4 keys in only 12 chords - none have to be barre chords if you learn a 4 string Fmaj, F#m and Bm.
    Then I would add some simple 7 chords - A7, B7, C7, D7, E7, G7 to add some twang to folk or country songs.
    Next Pick up the Key of E
    Key of Emaj E F#m G#m A B C#m - only 3 new chords here but the Bmaj chord can be a challenge for beginners and I played B7 as a substitute a lot for a long time.

I must have been 15 or 16 but now at 35 I hadn't touched a guitar in 8 years and even though I was a complete novice I acquired a whole new interest in playing. I know half of these cords yet have been absorbing soo much knowledge, like a sponge! I'm a MUCH better player today. Even got my first MIA Fender Strat Pro2 with a Fender Pro Jr4. Much better than playing a Squire with a frontman 15, lol. Although, I still own my Squire, having a Pro2 is a big difference.

    Personally I play the open A major chord with my second, third, and fourth fingers. Partially because it's easier to fit them all in place, but mostly because it makes the B major chord much easier to adjust to since it's basically just an A bar chord moved up a whole step.

    You can play the E7 chord by playing a regular E Maj chord and also fretting the third fret on the B string as well. If you voice it like that it leads better to the A Maj / Minor chord. Then both the tension notes in the E7 chord resolve correctly.

      NLK....Just wanted to say learning guitar is hard (at first), but you can do it. One of the things I learned was take your guitar to a qualified luthier or repair guy. It might cost a bit to get your git set up and more playable, but the experience will be well worth it. Bring a new set of strings with you. Then your git will be inviting you back to play instead of threatening to inflict pain.
      Find someone who will mentor you musically and is patient. LEARN SCALES! Be patient but persistent. Practice daily, at least 1/2 hour. Learn to play simple songs first, then tackle LZ (or whichever band you wish to emulate)...most of all, have fun!! Best regards musically, Bill

I had a cheap guitar with high action and would bare down on the barre till my hand cramped up. Took a day off and went back at it again. The awesome feeling of successfully playing a Barre chord is well worth it. Not to mention that now as an adult I play with heavies (strings) on my acoustic and my hands are stronger than most dudes I know. Keep working at the barre chords and only use the capo when really needed as dictated for certain specific songs that were written with the capo. You can do it!! Keep rocking!🤘🏻

    3-finger C chord is wonderful if you will be progressing to a C7. But for some reason, since my former teacher taught me a 4-finger C, that's what I've always used for an even more fuller sound. The trick I was taught is that to use fngers 2, 3 and 4 instead for an A Major because I am still struggling with Barre Chords. I'm really messed up! I was taught a 4-finger G instead. You are an awesome Teacher! I've developed habits. With the D Major, I use fingers 2, 3 and 4. I love your tutorial! You've broken it down to the very basic. I've just subscribed to your channel. • @robinhood480
      @robinhood480 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chiefline : When religion is used under the pretense of/ or in place of a proper relationship with God it does appear undesirable .
      Agreed.
      But “Invisible Man” ?
      Whether there is or isn’t a God you don’t expect to find natural proof of a Supernatural being do you ?
      That would be illogical.
      Atheism/ denial of God , is just a crutch some people use to avoid their feelings of convictions . To suppress the call of the Spirit.
      “ If I don’t believe , then it it isn’t real”.
      There ain’t no ghost 👻 as kids say
      Often we hear, “ Just because YOU believe it- that doesn’t make it real.”
      So it works in reverse too.
      “Just because you DON’T believe it doesn’t make it unreal.”
      Ok.... wait for it.........
      “PROVE GOD EXISTS “
      With what? Natural senses like sight and hearing, or touch, tastes, and smell are not going to detect any Supernatural Being!
      It supersedes the natural.
      Even an eagle 🦅 can see better that humans. Human flesh, our bodies, do not qualify as an efficient test for proving the Supernatural World.
      Your Mind & Spirit is how you “see”
      and “ hear” God. If you want to.
      Go ahead and do what you want as far as believing in God.
      Just don’t go on believing that humanity has the ability in the flesh with natural senses to detect and determine the existence of the Supernatural World/ and God.
      Thanks

    • @kenzireanna8400
      @kenzireanna8400 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chiefline you do need to work through that anger. The fact that you comment on a reply, bring yourself into a conversation, that had nothing to do with you, nor was it aimed towards you, because you don't agree? That's insanity. I'm an atheist, but I don't understand other atheists views on religion. It's not something that should upset you, who cares what other people believe in? They wanted answers, they found what works for them, you have no right to try and take that away because it doesn't fit what you believe or don't believe.

    Really nice! Although you somewhat explain that if you move a barre chord up and down the neck you get another chord, it would've been good to explain how to name each based on the fifth and sixth string notes. That would've been more clear and an eye opener for many beginner guitarists. For many many years i've only knew open chords because i thought that learning the "other" chords down the neck would be difficult because it would have been a different shape (like open chords) and to memorize this would be very cumbersome. Luckily that is not the case. If you explain the CAGED system only for E and A shapes that's a whole lot of chords there to play 95% of western music. And basically not only 20 chords but many many more.

If you know some basic positions for a chord, with some little knowledge you'll be able to build every type of chord you need, just where you need it, with the sound you look for. And then of course you go mad cause you realize there are thousands of possibilities. Still worthed.

There is a story about the Young Beatles getting into a taxi to go see one of George’s pals that knew how to play this chord shape. Don’t know for sure that it is true, but it is absolutely the sort of thing that guitar players would do before the internet and almost everything you learned was taught to you by one of your buddies, or from playing a track on a record over and over to work out what the groups were playing.
