  • Why would I buy the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo when I already own a number of digital and film cameras? The Mini Evo is a hybrid camera so you can take digital images and then choose which ones you want to print directly from the camera. The Mini Evo has 10 film effects and 10 lens effects that you can combine into 100 different possibilities. It is a beautiful stylish retro looking camera that you can even wirelessly print images from your mobile device.
    But most of all, the Instax Mini Evo is a lot of fun.
    Photographic equipment that I often use:

El Mini Evo tiene 10 efectos de película y 10 efectos de lente que puede combinar en 100 posibilidades diferentes. Pero, sobre todo, el Instax Mini Evo es muy divertido.

    但最重要的是,Instax Mini Evo很有趣。

    Wait, I just realized, this is not a "printer" in a classical way.
    It's actually the same process as the Polaroid, a light sensitive paper shortly exposed and chemical reaction.
    I'm impressed with the technology and love that it's analog.
    Yeah, I'll definitely get one for sure!

    • @thephotographytoolkit

      You're correct - the same process as a polaroid but not technically a polaroid because that is the brand name. I guess calling it Mini Instax Film would be more accurate but I don't think people would necessarily know what that means. Polaroid type film? Instant film? We could probably figure out a better name for that film. I hope you enjoy the camera as much as I do!

    I bought a instax mini 11 for my wedding, we've used it for so many special events since. It's been a big hit with family and friends when they can go home with a physical photo from a fun time together. My frustration was that I wasted a lot of film taking photos that came out as a disappointment... then I found this model! I picked it up today, I'm very excited to start playing around with the different filters.

    Hello!
    Thank you for the helpful guide.
    I’m still hesitant between this version of Fujifilm and the Canon Zoemini S2.
    Which one would you recommend?

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the question Mar. I have never used the Canon Zoemini S2 but looking at the specifications I can share some preliminary thoughts.
      1. A big part of the fun for me with the Instax Mini Evo is the filters and effects. That is what makes the camera so much fun. You can see my favourite creative techniques here: th-cam.com/video/fsDirWOgxms/w-d-xo.html
      When I compared the Mini Evo to my iPhone (th-cam.com/video/sjd_O5osyOM/w-d-xo.html) I found that they each made me look at situations differently. I am personally not a fan of the advertised effects on the Zoemini S2 where you put words on the photos. That just doesn't do it for me.
      2. The Canon does have many more megapixels than the Instax Mini Evo. So you will be able to do more with them if you download them.
      3. On the website, Canon says that you can print 25 pieces of paper on a full charge. That doesn't seem like a lot to me. I am not sure how many the Instax can capture on a full charge but I was able to go out for a day and capture pictures and print them.
      4. The big concern for me is the paper for the Canon. I am usually able to find the Instax paper pretty much everywhere. I have an older HP Sprocket which just prints photos from my smart phone and right from the beginning I had a lot of trouble getting paper for it. If the Canon Zink paper is easy to find then great. But I am not sure it is.
      5. Canon's website said that the camera's printer has a "printer head life" of 1000 pages. So at some point that printer is breaking down and won't be able to be fixed.
      6. I like that you can choose borderless prints with the Canon.
      To be honest, I would love to try out the Canon Zoemini S2 at some point if I can get my hands on it.
      I hope this was helpful.

    Hi! Thanks for your review. I don't know if you'll see this since your video is older now but I had a question if you don't mind. Many reviews say that you cannot send FROM the Instax TO your phone unless you have printed the photo first. Is that true? It seems like a very peculiar limitation and I don't see why that would be the case, yet I did see it mentioned several times in written reviews online. Thanks in advance for your clarification.

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the comment and question. I think it is funny that you say that my video is older because it is less than a year old and one of my newer videos. 😂
      You are correct that if you haven't printed the picture on the Instax Mini Evo, the camera will not give you the option of sending it to your phone. That is definitely a pain. My guess as to why they did this is because I might take a lot of photographs of one subject on my Evo and only choose to print a limited number and maybe they assume the limited number are the ones I want to send to my phone. If I had to scroll through all the hundreds or thousands of photos I have on my camera it might take some time and I might not know which one is the one I like best between similar shots. It would be great if, when transferring to my phone, I could choose between all photos or photos I have printed. That would give me options but still make it easy to find and print the photos I like best and have printed. An option of favouriting photos and viewing just those would work as well.
      One of your options is tricking the Mini Evo into thinking you have printed as outline here: th-cam.com/video/442TCPqfTA0/w-d-xo.html
      That process is quite time consuming. I prefer the second option.
      The second option is just to use a micro USB card and download the photos to your computer then your phone. The photos won't have the white border as they would if you transfer right from the phone. If I really want the white border, I just use a program like photoshop to combine a photo that I have printed and transferred that has the white border with the one from my micro USB. Then I transfer from my computer to my phone.
      I hope that make sense and I hope that helps.

      @@thephotographytoolkit haha, that's my misunderstanding of TH-cam from the content creator's end. I've asked questions on other videos and never got answers and assumed it's because the video is "old" and they never saw it.
      Thanks so much for your thorough reply and I'll keep that work-around in mind. Yes, it makes sense what you say. To be honest, I'm not a big photographer since everything went digital and I'm kind of just looking at options to have physical photos again. My mother had a Ricoh of some sort when we were growing up and us kids really didn't know how to use it properly but my god did we take so many photos! I feel like the magic has been lost a little now, ya know? I may go ahead and pick up a second hand camera from eBay in the end - just checking my options here and the Instax seems really fun and the limitation on transferring them isn't so bad in comparison to the old days when we couldn't even see our results for weeks so I am sure I will adapt - it just seemed like a strange limitation to build into a semi-digital camera. Haha. Thanks again for the reply and also the great videos, I was up at 2am watching you and other creators and I feel really excited about film cameras again!

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheLiquidCat It is all good! On my end, I try my best to answer questions the best I can. Thanks for the reply.
      I love both digital and analog photography and I do a bunch of both. I try to appreciate each for what they are and the challenges that come with each format. When it comes to the Mini Evo, I was attracted the the fact that I could capture photos with the camera and also print any photos from my phone. I really like that I can select photos to print and don't have to print everything.
      I totally understand when you say it is nice to have physical photos. I actually make it a point to get larger photos (30x40 inches or 50x75cm) printed every year and those are from digital files. I also get a book printed of images of my kids every year - like a year in review. Having physically printed photos is fantastic.
      In fact, the analog images that I capture on film are often scanned so I can share them or use them in other ways. I think what I am trying to say is that I really encourage people to get images printed and not just leave them as digital files and it doesn't matter if the image was captured as a digital file or an analog file. And I love the Mini Evo because it is really easy to capture images and share them. I especially like it when I am out taking pictures of people. I have even captured an image with my DSLR and wirelessly transferred it right away to my phone and then printed it with the mini Evo so I can share a portrait with the person I just took a picture of. That way it acts like a mini photo printer. I hope you enjoy whatever camera you decide to get.

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Any pictures that you print can be wirelessly transferred from the Mini Evo to your phone with the Instax Mini Evo app. If you want to transfer the pictures from the SD card directly to your phone (that you haven't printed) there are a couple of hacks like tricking the camera into thinking that it has printed the picture with an empty film cartridge.
      However, I think it is much easier and faster to just connect the SD card to a computer and then wireless transfer them to your phone from there. One thing to note, if you transfer from the Instax Mini Evo to your phone the photo will look like a print and have a white border and will be between 0.8 and 0.9 MB. If you put the photo onto a computer from the SD card, the photos won't have a white boarder and will be between 1.2 and 1.3MB.

      Hi - I wouldn't recommend it. For that type of photo you need a long exposure time which you can't control on the Instax Mini Evo. I actually wouldn't even recommend using a phone for those type of images. I would recommend a DSLR or mirrorlesss camera where you have more manual control over aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I hope that helps!

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question. I don't know anything about the Kodak Pixpro FZ55 other than what I can look up online. I think they are very different cameras. The Instax Mini Evo does't have a lot of megapixels (4.9MP) compared to the Kodak (16MP) so the Kodak will give you much better picture quality. The Mini Evo allows you to print in camera while the Kodak doesn't. The Kodak has a 5X zoom lens while the Mini Evo has a fixed lens. The Mini Evo has filters and effects while it doesn't look like the Kodak does have any of those features. The Mini Evo is a good option if you have a phone and you want to print those images or also print the images captured with the Mini Evo. If you don't have a decent phone camera, then I would probably go with the Kodak. Hope that helps.

      I am not sure why you don't have the green square for focus that can be seen at the 2:14 mark of the video. When I slightly depress the shutter release button to focus, I don't see it but after a short delay (as the camera focuses), it shows up. It allows me to focus and lock exposure and then recompose without lifting my finger off the slightly depressed shutter release button. I thought it might have something to do with face detection being turned on or off but it shows up for me for both. It also shows up when macro is on or off. Great question! I have actually recently just purchased a Mint TL70 plus camera which uses square Instax film. It is a TLR camera and I think it is absolutely beautiful. The screen is the same size as the print so you see what you get. It isn't a hybrid camera like the Mini Evo so you can't choose which images you print but I am really excited about the larger print size. It also allows for automatic or manual control so I am looking forward to exploring the possibilities. It is a more expensive option than the SQ20 and SQ10 so we will see if it is worth it. Maybe check out the Mint cameras as there are some other options that take Instax film: mint-camera.com/en/shop/cameras/

But that i was still happy with my purchase, sooo...I will probably end up with an Instax Mini Evo in addition to the SQ10. I think they serve different but equally great purposes. Thanks for the comment Sally. Fair point about low resolution prints on the Instax Mini Evo. That definitely isn't the selling point that they put first in their promotional material 🤣 One of the things about using different cameras is that they can sometimes make me look at the world differently and affect the way I approach a scene. One example of this is when I went out with both my iPhone and the Instax Mini Evo to see if the different cameras affected the way I approached or looked at a scene. Spoiler - they totally did and you can see that here: th-cam.com/video/sjd_O5osyOM/w-d-xo.html
      Sometimes I will go out at capture images with my 60 year old Nikon F which doesn't even have a meter and I have to set everything manually. Not everything for me is about the resolution of the image. Sometimes it is about being challenged as a photographer or trying out something different. Sometimes my purpose is just to have fun and experiment and play. And the Mini Evo is great for that. Thanks again for the comment.
