- FujiFilm has just released the Instax Mini 99, a surprise left turn by a brand that was slowly transitioning into the digital/film hybrid camera space. Instead, the Instax Mini 99 is an all-analog camera with a genuinely shocking array of features, some of which I've never seen before. To me, it's unequivocally the best Mini camera Fuji has ever released!

What does everyone think of the LED driven lighting effects? Yay? Nay? Okay? Old Bay?
Nay… the camera seems cool, but the LED effects seem to wash out the image
I dunno man, I feel rather than leaning into the shortcomings of Instax film, I'd rather they try to make the film better. I hope this doesn't mean they've given up on that.
Honestly, I am with you on this, I love that they even tried to do something so insane. Gonna be Big for Business for all the 'everyday' instax users, that don't spend every week hoping for a new Benny Bags video.
I think the LED effects are neat. The first thing I thought of was how it gave the Instax Film a Polaroid characteristic; similar to development temperature affects the hue of Polaroid film. Necessary? No. Creative? Yes. “Hotel? Trivago.”
I thought the same thing G3, basically simulating the concept of different Instax film emulsions without all the work 😂
I’m at a loss for words. The number of features in this Mini is incredible! I really wish they’d invest into making something like this for their Wide format.

The first Instax camera made by Fuji I’m interested in in a very long time. They need to show this type of love to the Wide format.

I recently purchased the Mini Evo and have thought the same thing. I love the instant cameras Fuji has been producing, I just wish mini film wasn't the main size they produced for.

I have some relatively ancient instax mini cameras that still take beautiful, sharp and tiny little photographs. I love them and they have long-outlived any lomography mistakes I've made in the past
It's kind of wild how Fujifilm treats other formats than Mini so badly. Even the new Square camera (I think released last year or 2022) comes with *nothing* in features. Not even double exposure. And the wide is so damn ugly that you could think Fujifilm doesn't want anyone to buy it.
Gives me hope for another feature-rich square camera.

That being said, I enjoy the Minis, so I'm excited they've revisited the format again and not with just another basic point-and-shoot.
Something that’s interesting that nobody is really talking about is how the LED effects are also effectively increasing the abysmal dynamic range that can sometimes limit instax film. I’ve seen examples of people pre-flashing instax to achieve more detail in the shadows while keeping the highlights intact as well and this does the same thing in practice. Would we all absolutely lose our collective mind if they made one of these bad boys in wide? That’s a resounding and unequivocal hell yes brother!

This is so cool. If they made this exact camera but for wide film, it would be one of the best selling instant film cameras of all time. The wide film is absolute perfection in quality.

Favorite Instax mini cam is still the Lomo Automat. Seems to have everything this does except the weird light effects stuff. And the vignetting on the Lomo lens is built in 😅 plus a longer bulb mode and remote shutter in the lens cap. It still holds up!
I still haven't tried that if you can believe it - they're so beautiful though!
Definitely recommended. Especially if this Fuji is too sharp for you, the lens on the Automat has the Lomo "character" you may be looking for.
Plus, PLUS it has a standard 43mm filter mount

Love my basic little Mini 9 and Mio, but I have definitely eyed the Automat a few times. So many cameras, so little cash lol.

Instax cameras are basically instant film box cameras that depend on fixed hyperfocal focus. If they gave them a wider aperture than they have, it would be impossible to get anything in focus.
As someone with a Mini Neo 90, this is definitely an improvement and a nod to those who want more control over their instant camera but don’t want to shell out $600 for the new Polaroid SX-70
This would be an instant buy for me in wide format. Those lighting effects are rad and channel the lomography style cross processing look. I'm tempted to buy this to show support, but I already never reach for the mini I have.
I hope the camera does broadly well enough that they make it in square (wide, in a perfect world)
I am going back and forth about buying this one or the Evo, but I can't decide! They both have awesome features. I like the fact that the Evo allows me to not waste so much film, but this seems like the best instant analog camera they have ever made.

For the future, I’d love if Fuji took a swing and designed some new lenses for Instax. The 60/12.7 is surprisingly good, but options would be cool. F/8 would be nice, and maybe worth considering a longer focal length, to shorten depth of field a touch. A 75mm f/8 would still probably do a good job zone focus on Instax Mini, but it’d offer more creative control. Although what I really want is an ultrawide. If they did a square Instax with a 42mm lens, it’d have the field of view of a Hasselblad SWC, for everyone out there who can’t afford a Hasselblad. Even Instax Mini with a wider angle lens could be a lot of fun. 40mm would work out to something like a 22mm FOV in FF terms.
Cannot wait for this! "film simulations" on an instant camera, cool. We need a Square version and for the love of God, can we please get a new Wide camera?! Ordering one as soon as it's up. Hopefully soon.
It’s truly film sims within film! It’s such a unique way to kind of expand what they offer for film using only light
Holy moly, what a surprise! I want it! Feels almost like a real life Hipstamatic camera. I wonder if the LED effects would work on bigger formats though, hope they can figure that out. Being able to give a warmer tone to a film that is generally pretty cold (I think) is so appealing to me. I think I might buy this as my first Instax camera just because of how fun it seems.
Great point about the warmth thing, Eirik. The warm tone option does a really nice job at countering the colder color temperature of Instax.

Fuji learned from their experience and took nice features from Lomography Lomo L'instant and made this beauty :)

Damn, I've been a long time photography enjoyer and a watcher of your channel, but only recently got into instant film with a polaroid onestep 600 that a relative found in their basement. This thing's cheaper film and more advanced features might be just what I need in an instax mini camera. Though the lomo instant is definitely strong competition.

Happy with all the ergonomics ideas of this camera and really hope they incorporate them (and build quality as well) in the next gen of the EVO.
I wish they'd make one for both the Square and Wide formats as well. I like being able to see the photos I take
I love this direction! But really hope they bring the same kind of attention to their Wide range too. To me, Instax Wide is the best format and hasn't seen an update in the longest time 😢

This is gonna be my first instant camera. Bought some film in advance. Never cared for the other minis except the 90 (which I somehow missed). Liking it a lot. If sales go well we might get a square and wide as well 🤞

Glad to see a sequel to the Mini 90! Just bought a Lomo Automat Glass a few months ago after my mini-90 developed battery drain. I think the Lomo edges out the win here with its glass lens and remote control, but this is such a cool camera nontheless!

I own 89 types of original Polaroid cameras, Peel apart, Sx-70, SX70 box type, 600, spectra, for dentists etc. and I love them. And everytime somebody around me mentioned Instax I was disgusted... But now, right here I just love this. It is Instax, It is analog, and you can apply filter with internal lights? All features are analog? Wow, I love it. This camera with Square format is what I need, what i want but I am totally ok with mini format right now - and I'll buy it!

That looks awesome, I just wish instax film was larger for me to finally make the leap. I can't seem to get excited for 6cm images that are sure to end up filed away and never seen again.
Their new campaign is "Give, Don't Take" or something like that, so I think they're actually encouraging that (to just have the experience and then give them away when you feel the urge).

Thanks for your video! I have the Instax Mini 90 which has the same features except the color mode. I would like to see a comparison of all their features to understand if the quality of the photos has improved in 10 years or they just changed the case and added colored filters. Thank you!
Images will look more or less the same! These Fuji cameras produce nearly identical results, it’s more so about whether you value the features and how you might use the thing
@@InAnInstant ok thanks. It's a pity that in 10 years they didn't focus on improving the image quality but only added some not so useful features or nothing more revolutionary than adding some color filters on the lens as it is already possible to do now easily.

Damn I just had an epiphany. For some reason Fuji’s pricing for a 20 exp pack of instax film goes like so:
Mini: $16.99
Square: $19.99
Wide: $18.99
The image size of wide is exactly twice the width of mini, as we all know this is the same film just cut to different widths. Could it be that since Fuji is making almost twice the profit margin off mini film they have more of an incentive to push that format with new and better cameras while they let their line of wide cameras languish behind? It seems like the most logical reasoning. Imagine they release an amazing wide camera and everyone is clamoring to buy up wide film but the film brings in significantly less profit, they would have to raise the price of wide and we all know how the film community responds when that happens.
interesting. i was also thinking of the reasoning behind the lack of square and wide cameras currently produced by fujifilm. do you think it might have something to do with polaroid? i read that polaroid was threatening to sue fujifilm for the production of square film.
Im willing to bet the mini format outsells square and wide combined, and by a ton. Thats why there are so many mini cameras and an endless amount of accessories. The Instax line is Fuji's bread and butter and Im sure they have done the R&D and know that the want for wide and even square isnt very great or they would be churning out new cameras for those formats. Sad because I much prefer square and wide as well.

It has a glass lens to my knowledge, but yes we need it in wide for sure

It's the size of the lens elements and design that dictates the maximum opening. So to make it faster they'd need to redesign the lens. And if you make it larger, you lose depth of field.
I hope Fuji checks your comments section cause oh boy, we're all screaming for this, but in wide 😂

Is it really so difficult for them to make an actual focus mechanism, they did it with the 500AF, I'm happy to pay extra
The Evo has that, but that’s a digital camera, not sure why they have avoided AF otherwise besides avoiding the mechanism and electronics it would add to the cameras. At f12.7, it’s pretty hard to miss focus and with only three zones to worry about, I’m not sure what AF would really add to this.

(I build myself some on mamiya universal camera's, but that being a rangefinder, the framing is always off) And even with a high aperture, the 500Af makes way better photos than any fixed focus wide camera. But it's seems I've been asleep and through your video discovered the NON camera's!

Regarding the Aperture... I believe this camera has a crop factor of 0.56, which makes the lens about a 34mm FF equivalent, and the aperture of f/12.7 @ 60mm is actually equivalent to f/7.1 @ 34mm on full frame in terms of DOF. I don't think they could have gone with a wider aperture without a decent autofocus system. It is actually much better than the f/22 FF equivalent on the mini Evo.

I appreciate the enhancements made to the mini99, but let's face it, the color palette of Instax film pales in comparison to the original Polaroid SX70 (TimeZero) films. The 'pressure paint' technique on Polaroid film remains a truly unique approach to timeless photography. The rich, saturated colors of Polaroid film have always been unrivaled, and they continue to reign supreme. Fuji Instax and the new Polaroid film packs simply can't compete in this regard.

I was super excited until I saw that the dial was for color. I wish it were for aperture or shutter speed. I do, however, think the vignette tool is nifty!
The exposure comp is for shutterspeed! Since the aperture is fixed. But, alas, would be nice to have some aperture control!

Yep give us this but wide, with multiple apertures and a plain white light mode to pot flash for dynamic range and im there. Half want to just buy it to encourage them, but as a poor person ill have to stick with my automat glass.
Curious that the Instax 8, without all the blows & whistles from later iterations is easier to use with studio strobes thanks for being a dumb camera. You manually select the best suited aperture, hidden behind comically icons for outdoors, indoors and so on. Hope they still use those oddly simple to use cameras with variable, bladeless, irises.
