absolutely LOVE IT, Evan. Thank you..........you mention a LOT of the same concepts I put on a video the other day on my youtube page. During an hour-long drive to a satellite MTT in Milwaukee, I talked to myself.......visioned myself winning and playing my "A" game.......I amazed myself how intensely focused I was when I arrived at the poker room. And yes, I place in the top 6 to win a ticket to a larger MTT. Executing your skills with perfect precision. I kept chanting that to myself before and during the MTT.
every session is just a practice sesh, love it!! i always feel like the worst when i make mistakes but i know that mistakes are just doors opening for me to improve my game even more and reach the top
Just wanted to say I started playing around a month ago coming from semi-pro mtg. I was getting extremely discouraged down like 20 buyins at 5nl zoom after studying several books and watching 100+ hours of instructional videos. I watched your 3 videos on flop, turn and river and I haven't had a losing session since. 4 days in a row I'm winning stack after stack while getting stacked very rarely due to the pot control you recommended for TPMK situations. It's actually wild how simple it is and I cannot in good conscience recommend that any beginner study anything except your videos. It's my dream to play games for a living and poker is my last shot. I was about to give up and your videos saved me. Thank you!
Awesome stuff, thanks. I have a lot to work on, lol - one step at a time. 2016 never give up! *Prepare:* - Mentally: Get the mind in poker mode, perhaps by studying a little, reading a poker book, watching some poker, but don't get overwhelmed with too much information though. Also get rid of distractions and deal with nagging thoughts such as knocking out some chores or putting in 5 minutes on an unfinished project, etc.. Visualize (this goes along with emotional preparation) and feel the image and confidence level I want at the table after taking a bad beat. - Physically: Which type of session am I playing - a long one or short one? Exercise to rid anxiety and get the blood flowing smoother for better brain operation and overall body comfort. Supply the body with good energy food that lasts over time and avoid foods that cause abnormal energy fluctuations. Stretch the muscles to allow smoother blood flow. - Emotionally: Reflect upon current emotions based on current thoughts. Wait to play if I feel emotional negativity and do what I can to solve those challenges before my next session (leave baggage away from the table). Aromatherapy is good for emotion-mind balance and so is music. - Have an intention for my session. Focus on my forming and improving my decision-making process rather than results. Plan something to work on and practice during my session. *Quality Practice and Review:* - Maintain positive mindset - realize I'm working toward a dream. Information reveals itself to the curious mind and the mind is more curious when in a positive state. This gaining of true knowledge via adopting a positive, curious mind builds confidence, which causes inspiration to want to learn more, causing more curiosity and more knowledge and more confidence in a never-ending cycle. This cycle is broken by the negative mind. - Practicing habits ingrains them - practice good habits and be excited to practice them. It's harder to unlearn an old habit than learn a new one. - At the table be focused, present, positive, passionate, and intentional. - Preparation and reflection before and after a session are more important than the session itself. Turn losses into learning experiences. - The more I practice something the easier and faster the challenge becomes. - Practice and get very good at the things my opponents don't want to do and then take that to the next level and do it again endlessly and just enjoy the progress. - Practice quitting as soon as I feel myself falling off my A-game in order to "re-center and recharge". In the long-run this will reduce bad decisions and force me to learn how to prepare and reflect better so as to optimize how long I can play my A-game and the speed with which I can recover once I drop off my A-game. - Practice disconnecting from poker when the session/reflection is over. - Mark hands for review with PokerTracker (I need to get PokerTracker as soon as I get my cash out next week) - Real growth happens when I'm on the edge of my comfort level - make the hard things become easy. - Schedule study time to review and study and learn after I've disconnected mentally and emotionally from my session so as to be less biased and have more energy/focus to get the most growth out of the review (maybe after having a good meal and some sleep). - Try to review hands with someone whose insight I respect and be as specific as possible about the hand. - Get FlopZilla ICMizer and use them when reviewing hands to see how loose opponents are and see how many hands are actually profitable in a certain spot. - Don't check my stats too often so as not to be distracted nor negatively affected by short-term results (especially when trying new things that might fail and need to be refined) - Be thankful *Gripsed's Extra Things To Look For About Self that Might Need Re-Programming If Found* - Feeling the NEED to have a winning session and have my stats be at their peak. - Feeling the need to move up limits to get lost money back. - Needing to open more tables to ensure I find ALL the weak players. - Needing to play more hours than I should once my A-game is exhausted. - Focusing on volume and quantity over learning and quality. - Needing to play perfectly because I can't make mistakes if I want to succeed - Only reviewing hands involving big pots instead of marking all hands that set off alarms, changed the way I felt/thought, or generally made me unsure. - If I start thinking I can figure everything out on my own and don't need other's input, I need to re-program myself - Limiting myself by feeling the need to label or classify myself as a certain type of player. - Forgetting that the smaller stakes under my normal one is a great place to experiment with new things. - Finding myself not willing to experiment and try new things. - Obsessing over short-term results and money rather than focusing on refining my decision-making process - Being too rigid in my poker routine. - Hero-worshipping: Feeling like the only people I can learn from are those who have already made a name for themselves (I want to be able to allow everyone I meet add to my knowledge). - Feeling like I can "solve" the game, which leads to going on tilt when I can't or when I lose, instead of embracing the infinite nature of the game. - Thinking there's only 1 right way to play a hand. - Not trusting myself, which restricts my ability to let the "flow-state" take over. - Getting caught up in the highs in poker and forgetting to set new goals, which puts my wins into perspective and keep my mind focused since success can greatly scatter the mind more than losing sometimes. - Forgetting to reward myself for good play and good results because these rewards become separators of my losses and serve as inspirational motivational anchors to look back upon in the future to keep me in the positive mind state.
Evan, I can't thank you enough for the changes in my mental game and thus the results in my poker game courtesy of this video! I took the time to visualize myself succeeding and what I wanted to focus on, prior to the session, and played my low stakes sit-and-go session out of primarily enjoyment rather than profit focused. I just kept winning, as I felt super confident in my short stacked, shorthanded, and deeper stacked HU play and the results just flowed in. I hardly even realized how much the money was flowing in, as I was having so much fun! After the 3 hour session was over, I had profited $220 and doing so was an absolute blast as a result in the change of mindset produced by this video. My only mistake was still caving and checking how much I made at the end of the session. Not doing so after every session (especially the successful ones) is what I'll be looking to improve next.
+Scott Hedley Glad to hear it had an instant effect Scotty. Checking your graph after isn't a 'mistake' btw, especially if you're doing all the other things right. The main point I was trying to make with that was the importance of putting your attention on the right things when its game time. Mental Game of Poker FTW, Watch our Jared Tendler, Gripsed's comin!!!
Much love Scott! Hope you're well brother! Thanks again for showing up at Fallsview back in 2016, made all the difference in the world. I'm so happy that I got to share that moment with someone, you're a legend!!!
Being calm and receptive to change, when it is needed. Then know it is always needed, somewhere in your game, even if just changing gears during a session. Thx Gripsed
Where were you all my life? I can't believe that you are giving such a useful information for free. Those advices you just game are worth gold! Thanks man! Keep up the good work!
I really like your videos when you talk about the importance of one's mindset and the attitude about what is going on in my thoughts and at the table. When i think at my game i really see that if i'm in a good state of mind i can be a really good poker player and can be suprised by my own skill... but on the other hand sometimes i feel like playing poorly and feel frustrated about myself and i fell not skilled. So for me beeing in a good state of mind is the most importance part of the game and this is really the skill which i need to have to develop cause I think if you mangage that skill, the rest is the logical conclusion. So I'm really happy to see your videos, you're really helping me out and seeing that you're at the way i like to go makes me feel supported and also bringing me back to the important things if i lose myself into trouble!.. so thanks for that evan :) and sorry about my english i hope you can feel the purpose beyond the words. One of the things i really miss is that i didn't found people to share poker, cause i don't know people in my surrounding playing poker at the way i like. So i'm really interested to "meet" people who likes to share their expierience as well and connect to others. I'm really impressed by what your doing and how you connect to the people. I dont know if others are interested in that but i would love to hear about how you connect with the people and built up a learning community. Keep on going, great to know you :)
throwback! ive said it before and ill say it again im ur number one fan. it took me 10 years just to see a little progress but thats because ive drastically lacked discipline when i was a younger man, ur my hero my guru and my friend, Dan
good stuff here...best to do analysis on a fresh set of eyeballs, and rest. SO TRUE. I found myself making bad positional choices and getting sucked into tilting decisions. PATIENCE in larger table play is key. Wait for the orbit to be in your favor,,,
Great vid as always Pokes! Can't wait for your vid on how to study. I have a pretty high intelligence, don't mean to sound pretentious lol, but because of that, school was always easy to me and I could get good grades with minimal effort which set 2 dangerous precedents; 1, subconsciously I think that stuff will come easy to me and get frustrated when I don't get the results I feel I deserve and 2, I never really learnt how to study properly, so my review sessions are kind of like throwing darts at a board to figure what to review or study. Have been watching your vids for about and year and a half now and I can already see a mindset change in myself that is helping me achieve my goals. Just admitting that I know have these issues is a giant leap from where I previously was. Keep up the amazing work and 2016 IS THE YEAR!!!!!!!!! (Raso3bet)
+Jacques Schalaques Too smart for school, my kinda student! I learned bad study habits in school as well, but these can be rewired and fixed for sure. Hope you've been making mad progress since this post a month ago!
Dude Evan you´re a beast. I was real into poker a few years back and was making about 500-1000 a night live playing 1-2 at a casino i lived by for a few months, but then I moved away and could never really get into it online. But just got back into it and from watching this video played a bounty tourney listening to this advice and came in 110 out of 6,550 and only lost cuz I missplayed some 5´s late and forced cuz of lack of stamina. But thanks man this and your stuff really helps put together the things im good at and eliminate what i´m bad at. Thanks bro. btw do you still do team gripsed like I saw in some old videos?
Evan if you're not aware what you described about positive emotions is actually called the broaden and build theory of positive emotions. You were spot on in describing what it essentially is.
Thanks for this Evan! This video allowed me to realize that the times I've visualized myself winning are the times where I've often had a winning outcome. I haven't really connected the dots on that one before :)
Great video, just one thing, if you post an hand on a forum to have a feed back from users you should mention also the timing of that play and the last 2/3 hands before, is not easy to have a good review from a forum in my opinion for many reasons
I really like the concept of practice here. If we look at it the same way as we would a meditation practice, we realize that the journey is what is important. By focusing on the practice, the results take care of themselves over the long run.
Hey Gripsed, just wanted to say thanks heaps for your videos. I just shipped my 1st ever tourney the big $2.20.. never would have done it without learning from you and a few other youtubers :)
+mitsando congratulations bro, that's super awesome! Happy to have been of service, hope your good run will continue for the rest of 2016, and onwards!
Thank you sir, also sometimes it's good to chill, relax in yourself for abit before starting saying beautiful and strong thoughts to yourself to boost your energy level and confidence. This is what is working out for me at the moment. Also don't forget about taking care of your body ( it's most important in my opinion ), just doing even a small thing that improves your health, will bring better results at the poker table.
Hi Evan man. I've been learning a lot from all your videos but one thing I'm battling with is post-flop plays...one question I have is when should you raise/play small pairs like 55-22...I just feel like if the opponent connects any pair at all with the flop it will usually be stronger than our 22...so should you just check/small call these small pairs or what? I honestly feel like I just never want to play 55-22 cause you are never sure unless you hit trips or more
+Francois Kruger try never playing them and see what happens. You know except for calling in perfect spots like the Triple threat talks about th-cam.com/video/zH45e91Nk8E/w-d-xo.html My guess is you'll probably win more money. I fold pocket pairs a lot, I don't think they're strong hands either
Ive been playing free 2 play online poker for a while now and I wanna start playing for real money. I like to play on my iphone but I can’t find any HUD for iPhone. Is there any? And which poker site should I choose if I wanna play on iPhone? Or should i just start playing on my computer instead. I like that it’s so easy playing wherever and whenever I want on my iPhone. Thank you for your videos! They have helped me so much with improving my poker playing. Sorry for bad English! /Martin from Sweden
This guy is incredibly correct....l play Poker for hours a week actually , too many on average. He is so right on every single aspect of poker. Your awesome man. I hope and I must try to follow every word you say in this video. YOUR AWESOME EVAN!
Hey Evan nice video but it would be cool if you could get a bipod or a higher bipod for your camera so you are looking straight towards us rather than slightly downwards which is the case now. Keep up the good work!
- I've started making videos for Pokercoaching Premium, check out pokercoaching.org to get a 3 day free pass!!! I've fixed my camera, finally learned it was time to invest in a proper setup if i was going to be making so many videos :P
hey bud you got any advice for someone wanting to play first cash game 1/2 normal city not vegas lol I hear play is generally weaker than online what should I take into account when playing live what kind of level are 1/2 fish regs operating on in terms of thinking lol
+Glenn Bridges They will be playing way more hands than they should. Play tight, play in position and follow the Triple Threat and you'll probably clean up 75-80% of the time. Seriously, live 1/2 is actually that soft. Just for the most part don't bluff cause people don't value the money enough to make any real folds. Good luck and happy stackin bro!
hey grips, I've built up a $40 bankroll over the last few months, I started a my bankroll with free rolls and worked up from there strictly playing $1 sit n goes. The last three days I've gotten down to $20. I'm still not sure if I'm good I'm an ok poker player or a bad one. Is it possible that I built up a $40 bankroll from playing low stakes sit n goes with just luck? Why am I having this losing streak?
+SAYWHAT? yeah its possible for sure . i only play low stakes sit n goes ore tournaments . i have winning over the 400$ in total . With only a maximum buy in off 1.10$ .
+SAYWHAT? Yep, it's a naturally swing. Your playing with 2.5% of your roll each game so you're going to have swings that seem big. Once you build up to 100 buyins or more for your bankroll swings will be less significant. Sounds like you've got skill, I wouldn't chalk it up to luck. For more info on how swings can look check out swongsim forumserver.twoplustwo.com/45/software/swongsim-roi-variance-simulator-lottery-payout-sngs-2k-post-1468580/ Hope you'll continue to build, and continue to get stackin!
Gripsed Poker Training thank you for the advice! also, I'm reading super system right now by Doyle Brunson do you have any other books you might be able to recommend me?
+SAYWHAT? Here's my top 10 list - th-cam.com/video/fNzVmPMzfHo/w-d-xo.html Also my books are very comprehensive, the MTT Strategy Guide and the Cash game crash course. You can get them for free at www.gripsed.com/free #GetStackin

You weren't making that much playing 1-2 unless you ran crazy good.

Evan if you're not aware what you described about positive emotions is actually called the broaden and build theory of positive emotions. You were spot on in describing what it essentially is.
I was not aware, but that's cool to learn!!! Thx :)

You know except for calling in perfect spots like the Triple threat talks about
th-cam.com/video/zH45e91Nk8E/w-d-xo.html
My guess is you'll probably win more money.

They have helped me so much with improving my poker playing.

hey bud you got any advice for someone wanting to play first cash game 1/2 normal city not vegas lol I hear play is generally weaker than online what should I take into account when playing live what kind of level are 1/2 fish regs operating on in terms of thinking lol

+SAYWHAT? variance bro. it happens of u got up to 40$ sky is the limit with the right bankroll management
+SAYWHAT? Yep, it's a naturally swing. Your playing with 2.5% of your roll each game so you're going to have swings that seem big.
Once you build up to 100 buyins or more for your bankroll swings will be less significant. Sounds like you've got skill, I wouldn't chalk it up to luck.
For more info on how swings can look check out swongsim forumserver.twoplustwo.com/45/software/swongsim-roi-variance-simulator-lottery-payout-sngs-2k-post-1468580/
Hope you'll continue to build, and continue to get stackin!

Also my books are very comprehensive, the MTT Strategy Guide and the Cash game crash course.

can anyone explain to me the benefit of pro players making us these videos please ?
money.
Thanks Wrecker.
The real answer is that they get paid through coaching sites and the ones that you see on TH-cam are very first level. to hook you in.
Hey Harte, I've started making videos for Pokercoaching Premium, check out pokercoaching.org to get a 3 day free pass!!!
We make the videos because we want to do more than just play, and yes, as with all careers we get paid as a result of that service.
Same reason pro sports players become coaches, to share what they know and love best with those who are eager to learn

you DONT study poker, its useless. you buyin as expensive tournament as possible ,wait for good hand, shove and close your eyes and hope for the best. Repeat until you win. Thats how 5% ppl make profit money (not because they are skilled, because they are lucky)
sten260 no shit. But not everything is black and white. Sometimes analyzing or just pure fucking foresight helps
sten260 also lucky=foresight. I seen it and even when i see players think theyre lucky they still lose.
