I purchased an exhaust guide cleaning reamer from McFarlane to clean the guides on my IO-360 after it failed the Lycoming mandatory service bulletin 388C. The reamer is a very nice reamer, even a pilot friend who is a retired Tool and Die maker commented on the quality. I recommend the reamer, make sure you have a tap handle large enough, the handle end is 3/8" sq.
Just saw this. In automotive this is called overreeming and results in side play between the valve stem and guide, and somewhat of a patch job. The guide can be knurled to restore clearance but is less than a long-term solution due to accelerated wear and carbon retention.
Any hardware store should have an adjustable tap reamer handle. One capable of 1/4”-3/4” will be sufficient for all of the VGR- reamers. Thank you, Capt. Greg!

Just ordered and used my .499-.5005 for Lycoming O-320. Worked Just as Described! Always a pleasure using McFarlane Products!!

I just learned of these today . Thanks for this.
I did cylinder overhauls at Mattituck Aviation for 5 years. I'm having flashbacks.
Mattituck Engines were the best! I have a pair on my Aztec. DId you work on LI?
Where do I get the tap handle to fit the reamer for an O-540?
