Great content Stewart! I've been flying with the Neo since it came out and have got some incredible shots with it, but I'm hoping DJI adds some features in the firmware soon (4K60 and Log capability). I've watched numerous YT videos on the Neo and I learn more new stuff from you than anyone else. Thanks for your hard work - we appreciate it! 😀
I'll probably get one eventually, but because it seems like the perfect solution for backpacking when weight and size are premium issues and I'm not really looking for the distance shots so much as just getting the occasional shot or clip I can't get from anything handheld.
I loved the original mavic air with gesture control. It was great for getting the drone up for a quick, simple shot and back down without any fuss. I'm glad they finally came out with something similar. For me, this one feature will justify getting this one, especially at this price point. The vlogger feature is an added bonus too.
Do you know if you change camera settings via the remote, does it retain those settings when you use the Neo without the remote? I want to set things like contrast, but most of my use will be done without the remote.
Good vid thanks! Just a note re ND filters: they are only useful when using the RC, as phone or hand launch modes only use auto-exposure, so adding ND will just force the AE to compensate, not always in a good way.
Well put. ND filters should never be used with auto exposure. The camera knows it needs a fast shutter for EIS to operate properly so it will prioritise that and rocket up the ISO if required. In the case of the Neo, this will ruin the image. Even if it was an incredibly bright day, the camera simply won't lower the shutter to the level required to produce motion blur because it knows it will interfere with the EIS. Our NDs are stuck in customs at the moment but once we get them we'll make a video because there's a lot of confusion on this issue unfortunately.
I was unaware EIS needs higher shutter speeds - to avoid that action camera artifact phenomena, thus reducing the effectiveness of ND Filters. I always gain really useful knowledge takeaway here. This is why I am here for everything you create!
Good call out on using ND filters on camera's using EIS. I have been dealing with this on Action cameras for a few years. Great long term review of the Neo, the best cheap selfie drone on the market right now. Thanks for sharing.
Love mine, so versatile and portable. Use for travel and moto vlogging alongside my action cameras😀👍. You need the remote for the best results…I’m sure I’ll get a more cinematic drone at some stage.
This review was awesome! You guys weren't afraid to call out the DJI Neo's weaknesses, especially for the price. But seriously, who needs a fancy controller when you can fly with your phone for $199? Although... maybe some manual camera controls would be nice. Can't wait to see what crazy drone tech comes next!
Great video! This drone is probably good enough for those doing daily vlogs wanting to add a little bit of interest to the scenic environment footage, but it won't be getting those decent drone shots without a controller. And then if that is the case, one might as well just get a normal decent drone in the first place. But I'm not entirely sure whether or not these drone shots are even necessary. It's just personal preference.
Appreciate the no shill review Stuart. The Neo seems almost like ‘would you like fries with your order?’ for those who already own controllers. I’m resisting the purchase but looking forward to pretending I can fly FPV with the Neo 2
In USA? Or abroad? I ordered combo version but hasn’t shipped yet. I couldn’t wait so I ordered non combo, which was available and received within a day. Haven’t tested it yet, but If I like it then I won’t cancel the combo.
Hey JP! Yes, via the phone. The vocal isolation does deteriorate the quality of the audio a bit mind you. We just updated FCPX and it's got a vocal isolation option now. Need to test that as an alternative.
@@DroneFilmGuide FCP vocal isolation is great but gain you sometimes have to be agressive depending on the noise but should do well with drone whine. Great news about the phone but doe s the DJI Mic work with it. That would be amazing
Sure thing - the DJI Mic works (via the phone). I used the DJI Mic receiver on the phone to be on the safe side but I've seen others bluetooth connect the Mic to the phone. Either way, the audio records to the video file on the Neo.
Thanks again for another excellent video. I did wonder about the RTH behaviour options, ta for answering that. If there's no leaks of a Neo 2 by the week before Christmas then I might just go for it. Having not flown at all for over a year, then finally taking the original Mavic Mini on holiday last month, I might've got reinfected by the DJI Bug with the Neo.
@@DroneFilmGuide Annoyingly, just after I'd landed my Mini on the beach, someone about 30 feet away did a rocket with their new Neo (after some instruction) I guessed it was his first dji drone as he couldn't get the hang of the short/long press to turn on the controller. Kept going into RTH mode while the drone was still unpowered beside him 🤣
I think the Neo makes it obvious that the drone laws should be updated. Flying a Neo at shoulder's height to do some documentation of a backpacking trip is simply not the same as flying on 100m to get some aerial shots, but both are considered "flying".
Thanks Stewart. I'm most surprised by the price. The trend with DJI seemed to be smaller drones with ever bigger price tags. This looks very entertaining if nothing else.
Great conclusions and discussions. Roll on the next edition, here that weather and the hills definitely isnt in Scotland eh ?😅 Looks lovely nonetheless, even if it's no Scotland.
⭐Come on DJI, give us manual camera control with my phone. The point of this tiny drone for me is I don't have to pack a controller. Your forcing me into buying the new and more expensive Hoverair, Im hanging on, because I reckon ypu will do this.
Absolutely brilliant review.. You are right when you say it’s better with a controller but saying that NEO is amazing drone I bet DJI will bring out avoidance sensors next NEO 2 😂 but price wise outstanding. Thanks for all the hints and tips.
8:00 YOu could control the DJI Spark with just a phone. To be honest thats still my favourite DJI product overall, its a real shame the stopped making the batteries
NEO needs ND filter mount !!!!!! Why no ability to put on ND filters ??? Are there ND filters for the NEO ??? See at about 17:22 you are using an absolutely ridiculous shutter speed of 1/1250 to get a proper exposure. ISO should be 100 in daylight to lessen noise but these unavoidable high shutter speeds are terrible. Sort this out and I will buy a Neo immediately. These high shutter speeds make video look like a 1980s news cast. Way to crisp and unnatural. Fix this please or is there a hack to get a ND filter on the NEO? Seems to me to be an easy thing to build to accommodate an ND filter.

Appreciate your kind comment! Glad to hear you're enjoying the Neo.
Just received mine today and now watching everything about it. Thanks for all your videos. :)
Great to hear! Welcome to the channel!

If I have the avata2, can I just buy the Neo and use the same controller and goggles?

Having so much fun with the Neo, I’m able to add some aerial clips to my video footage with my Action 5 👍

Great insight thank you! I am very tempted to get this as a fist for each leg of the family for xmas.
Thanks for another great video. I’ve had a NEO since launch day and it does have a form of collision avoidance via the main camera.

Oh-ready for this Stewart!!
I agree with all what you said. Its my first drone and its awesome! I like the autonom idea. Image what the next neos could do.
Glad you're enjoying your first drone! Exciting times!

looking at the vlogging idea with this camera does the DJI mics connect to it? that would be handy

I know the feeling. Will be interesting to see DJI's next move because if the Neo gets any better it will be the no.1 choice for most of the market.

Have you tried the voice commands?
Didn't get round to it I'm afraid.
