  • Members of the Carillon Society can do more than make magic on the bells at the top of Rush Rhees. This past semester, they put their engineering and physics skills together, too, as they built a new practice carillon from scratch. Sophomores Alex Johnson and David Marshall talk about the process of building the MIDI-based carillon and the payoffs it will provide for Rochester's team of bell-ringers.

@UniversityRochester, I have some questions. Who made the practice carillon kit that you all built? And what program was used to obtain the bell sounds? I'm a blind player, studying with George Matthew, Jr. here in rural Vermont. I've been searching up and down, left and right and everywhere for a practice keyboard I can use. Any ideas and info would be much appreciated.

So you made a MIDI controller you can play with your fists? Nice!

makes me laugh....several thousand for what is a glorified MIDI keyboard....guess if youre the only company making these you can charge whatever ridiculous price you want. The Chime master systems use awful samples too....i have12 sample sets that knock spots of them....only wish i could make a lil gizmo box to trigger them then id be ringing it in haha!! KAA CHING!
