This made me giggle so much. 1000/10 would laugh again
I mean its literally in Chicago so its a LOT of people
My college has a set of carillon bells. 48. I managed to take a class on it and we got to bring in our own music to play.
Thing is that we didn't have practice bells so to practice, we had to schedule time slots to go up and play it. We picked out two songs for midterms and finals and played them respectively for our professor, the main carillonneur at the time.
I absolutely loved hearing others play even if they messed up.
I remember walking to class in pouring rain one day and someone in the tower played 2-2 from Mario. It made my miserable walk so much better!
Which school? I've never visited a tower without practice bells, that would be neeve racking! (I played at Wellesley)
@@petraarkian7720 Clemson University in Clemson, SC, USA. I was there from 2008-2014. It could have changed since I was last up in the tower.
Likewise, the Memorial Student Union building at my university had a set of carillon chimes up in its tower. The system went defunct at some point, though (lack of proper maintenance over the long term, I bet). So, while I was there (during the 1990s), it was all pulled out and replaced with speakers on the roof that play electronic carillon recordings. It's sad (I'm an historian and sentimentalist) but, admittedly, the argument that the "fake" chime music is preferable to the silence formerly offered by the broken genuine article has merit. People still look at me skeptically when I point out the space in the building where the carillonneur's console used to be.

A hundred tons of bronze
Up in the carillon tower
Two times every day
It will ring for an hour
For whom the bells toll
And for miles around
You can never escape
That ghostly sound
There’s a man who lives
Up among the bells
Where no one can hear
All his cries and yells
The town’s people say
He’s a hundred years old
He’s as ugly as sin
Or so they are told
They’ll replace the Carilloneer
They will need one soon
The man in the tower
Shall be meeting his doom
When they come with forks
And their torches alight
Up on your porch
In the middle of the night
You will know your sin
And the punishment due
The next man in the tower
Will surely be you

The energy of this video was just infectious with positivity. The coincidence of the bells chiming on the hour JUST as they say something about it is absolutely hilarious. Just how happy they are to make music and learn. I can’t imagine being in town that day, first it’s 1:00 and the tower chimes normally, then chime four more times, then have a seizure, and then play Metallica. Just amazing, and I’m definitely going to be saving this video to my “good things to rewatch on road trips” playlist
This is one video where the mic getting blown out actually adds to the quality.
DJNokem so true, just helps people who don’t understand how loud it is, how loud it actually is. The vibrations are so heavy, it travels through the person holding the camera and through the air. Just truly amazing
"So do any of these chime on the hour?"
"Yea-"

Those were the last words they’ve will ever hear.
Guess that's a yess
@@cosmiccaleb9633 This made me laugh.
ye-*BELLS CHIME*
Did that mean: 10:00
9:58 is a terrific example of how microphones cannot capture all aspects of a sound, particularly loud ones. This is why gunfire (for example) sounds very different on film as opposed to real life.
EDIT: For all the dweebs saying "ACKSHUALLY...", **yes,** I'm well-aware that the sound of gunfire can be reproduced with reasonable accuracy, but it requires that the sound engineer have knowledge of the sound system that will be used and that it be properly configured.
Correct , mics cannot even capture the timbre of a acoustic guitar realistically let alone a piano or church organ of bells like this. There is a huge amount of dynamic range these instruments produce ..
9:58 10:00 is loud
The problem usually isn't with the microphones, it's with the playback system being unable to reproduce the signal. Unless, of course, cheap microphones are being used.
Your point is valid, but I know some film and tv sound designers and they’ve told me gunshots sound so different in media is because “real gunshots sound pretty lame…like firecrackers.” Thus you get a .38 that sounds like a canon going off.
@@stuminnis4050 the 'design' of the sound is lame, but very, very loud. So its a bit of both. Microphones cant record that loud and speakers can't play back that loud because its literally deafening. And then the sound itself isn't 'epic' enough for the movies.
That jam session was definitely my favorite part of the video - put such a big smile on my face! What an awe-inspiring instrument

@@tatsu8886 Oh yeah for sure. I watch all of Rob's videos start to finish. The pipe organ video was great, definitely enjoyed it. There's just something about this... the Carillon... that did it for me. Probably the percussive aspect of it. That or I'm just able to relate to the simplicity of bells (it's a thing that you hit with a thing and it makes a sound) a little bit more than the pipe organ. Rain was so beautiful
29:15 it isn't... Maybe
The fact that Rain can be played on this instrument in absolutely insane. !!
Thanks so VERY much for such an entertaining and thorough video of this Carillon! I especially love YOU playing the instrument for the first time.

lol
And man was mad jammin on some big ass bells with the bro
As far as professional musicians go, Rob knows some classy hitters
also INCREDIBLY great humor timing
29:23 They make up a new song on the fly. Musician's are amazing if you just let their creativity explore.
Its insane to watch. I envy it
Carillon duet was awesome - thank you!
I love seeing people who genuinely LOVE their profession
Joey is such a friendly guy and you can tell how passionate he is about both the Carillon and music. What an awesome dude.
It’s funny because the Harry Potter theme was originally composed for a celeste, which is basically a smaller version of a carillon
wow
I waz told it is called a chime when it has less than 23 bells!!!
celeste is just glockenspiel with keyboard
Carillon is not an instrument, it is a tower
@Brandon Postel ok????
Not a instrument I could listen too all day, but just like a church organ..
It's a incredible testament of what humans are capable of doing .
One of these in my city, home city, that I've had the blessing of not only playing but also composing a specific piece for.
“So, do any of these chime on the hour”
Bells* “allow me to introduce myself”
The best part is this comment comes from someone named "Bell" :-D
Would really love to hear “This is Halloween” on this thing
Oh shit that would be so cool :D
halloween theme song would be just as cool too
I think they played that or at least similarly themed music at UMT's carrilon on Halloween!
Wow ... one of the best beel keepers I've ever seen/heard... a marvelous tour and treat for us... thank you gentlemen for the tasks required to do so it's spectacular❤💖
I am so grateful to have found your channel tonight. So much fun. Mysterious and joyful. Simply splendid
That moment when your instrument wasn't "made" or "crafted" but *BUILT*
... and a wall in a building had to be removed to install it! :-)
Constructed*
I don’t understand the difference
@@AcidArmy_ "building" is a word you usually use when referring to structures, not instruments.
@@cellokid5104 ah, so it’s the scale of the project that matters
