The song is about being afraid of losing the passion for their art, passion, dancing singing, creativity . "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing and this first death is the most painful" Quote from a famous dancer with the name Martha Graham. It's said that this song is inspired from that quote.

Yeah. We invaded you but it's because we like you. You catch the meaning very quickly. It is about an artist's fear of losing their passion for their craft and how that would be their first death. I think the reason they're called their own genre is because they've truly been global blockbusters for several years now and the KPop industry pretty much rejected them until that was evident.
They filmed this in LA and there's a great video of Jimin's grueling day filming the solo dance. I think this is probably when they filmed ON: Kinetic Manifesto Film, too, as it was filmed in LA. Try it. You will stop it right away saying, "Wait. Is this the same group that did Black Swan?!" For some R&B with rapping try Just One Day live Armypedia version and for some neo-soul try V's Singularity or Stigma. For the rap line start with Outro: Tear live or Ddaeng or UGH!

This song is pure performance art. They tore that "boyband" label off and threw it in the trash where it belongs. You can't label BTS because they simply say "Hell Nah" and prove you wrong by switching it up. They are constantly evolving and pushing personal boundaries & skillsets and it's why they are so very good. Most bands are scared of trying new things because of fear of losing fans. BTS however have no such qualms, they have the security of knowing ARMY will always be there to support and encourage them as they learn and grow.

Considering the number of comments on this video, you may not see this, but I thought that I'd at least try to let you know. BTS was originally supposed to be a hip hop group and the first three members chosen for the group are the three rappers: RM, Suga, and J-Hope. RM and Suga were part of the underground rap scene and J-Hope was a street dancer and damned good at it. Those three have Hip Hop in their blood and it shows. The early BTS discography is heavily influenced by those Hip Hop roots, too. The only genre BTS doesn't really do is American Country music. Even with that, the main vocalist, Jungkook, has done a couple of country covers. If you want a really heavy R&B vibe, you should check out V's solo, Singularity. They have a song, House of Cards, that even has scatting in it. They also have a fictional storyline that runs through many of their videos, starting in 2015 with the song, "I Need U". Oh, and they also have Japanese songs that really show off their incredible vocals. BTS is BTS. There really isn't anyone out there like them. I haven't even touched on the love affair between BTS and ARMY. I'm 50 years old and I have never in my life seen a singer or group that writes so many songs specifically for their fans. Their entire last album was about Covid and dealing with the negativity and depression that came from being in quarantine. You have a LOT to unpack. Have fun!

The meaning of Black Swan is deep. Not about any girl. The first death line is inspired by Martha Graham's quote "a dancer die twice, the first when he stopped dancing, and it is the more painful". The song is about "Shadow", one of four components that make up Carl Jung's "Map of the Soul". Shadow is the side of us that we keep hidden. Here they are sharing their shadow - the fear of losing their passion for music. Jimin was supposed to do all the shadows, but for reasons not mentioned, Jhope ended up doing RM's. Maybe Jimin got busy with his solo shoots. You should do "Airplane pt. 2" next if you wanna see BTS do Latin 😉, and "Fake Love' extended mv which is rock.

Black Swan was written by RM after being inspired by the quote "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and their first death is the more painful" ...here BTS talks about their fear of losing their passion for their art..and if that day comes then it will be their first death....RM was afraid that what if that moment is already here (hence the lyrics but what if the moment's right now, right now). With Suga's second verse, the song starts getting a little bit positive with them saying that no matter what we will never forget our art, we will rise (with our shadows) even in times like those because music is the driving force for them.
They also have another MV for this song "Black Swan art film" (it is the orchestral version of the song) where you'll see MN dance studio representing a swan and its shadow....the swan first tries to break free from its shadow but ends up accepting it and rising up with its help....this also represents the concept BTS went for with their album Map of the Soul: 7 which talks about a persons persona, shadow and ego (Black Swan is a pre-release single from this album)

You are in for one heck of a journey with BTS. And yes BTS is THE genre. Their own genre. They do not have any 2 similar songs and no fillers. Their albums are no skip, exactly because of their versatility as musicians/artists. Their lyrics are poems that can be commented and analyzed for days. They are stupendous dancers and live performers (when you see them live, you will understand how extraordinary they really are, either as a group, as vocalists or as rappers). They are composers, producers, lyricists and they always have a hand in most of their songs. They have music for all tastes and moods. I cant wait to see you react to ON:Kinetic Manifesto.

BTS write, composed, and produce their own music.
they sing about mental health, women empowerment, self growth, loving yourself.
They have helped so many people from all ages heal themselves from traumas with their meaningful lyrics
BTS sells out stadiums all around the world.
    Not an empty seat EVER!
they sound like they eat their own albums for breakfast live!
You have to check out some of their live performances.

I'm a 59 y/o army and have been since 2017. One to check out is For You dance version, its got a soft r&b feel but the choreo is fire. Definitely check out On- Kinetic Manifesto version, yet another "step" of their dance and musical talent! Definitely check out Ddaeng back to back with Ddaeng explained by a korean if you want the rapline to blow your mind, true lyrical geniuses!! Their old stuff is just as good brah, dont be fooled...they are not anything you've seen before, they are so talented. I definitely advise you to watch the older mvs back to back with their dance practices so you can see the lit choreo that can get lost in the mv and you'll get a whole new respect by their dance skills but also realize they've been bad ass since the jump! Some of the vocal line songs i love are Let me know, Born Singer, House of Cards, The truth untold and then some of their individual work would be RM Joke and Sugas- Agust'd (Agust'd is Suga backwards and DT is cuz he's from Daegu town)and Daechwita, JHope-Boy meets evil mv, Jin-Epiphany live and Awake live, V-Stigma live and Singularity, Jimin-Serendipity live and Filter live, Jungkook-Euphoria live or anything Jungkook sings is amazing ...dude theres so many but this would be a great start. I most definitely would watch xCeleste-This is BTS-Introduction to BTS, This is BTS Army-Introduction to BTS Army and also BTS' Contribution to music. After all this I think you should watch these first two by xCeleste before you go any further cuz it'll give you great insight as to what BTS and Army are truly all about.....not just music and dance but changing the world. You asked for our opinion on what next, I took the time to hook you up so i hope you take my advise and watch these. Peace!

I really love this song, the theme is deep, their fear as artists, of losing passion for their art. It is based on a quote by dancer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the most painful".
I am always impressed by BTS's lyricism and also their creativity, in this song the underwater feel of the music reflects the lines about being underneath the waves/stuck on the ocean floor, the use of traditional Korean string instruments with the trap beat is amazing.
Pure art! Put everything together; the music, the choreography, the lyrics, the visuals; it's the complete package.

  • @stumpy447

Martha Graham is a famous dancer who said "a dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful." Black Swan's lyrics are deep and so sad, but we can see where they fight for what they love within themselves around the second chorus.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but I feel this music video really highlights some of their dance strength. Jimin was a top student at a school of contemporary dance before he decided to join the group. The choreography here is really his style and perfectly shows his talents. On the other hand, there's also Jhope who had already gained renown as a street dancer before he joined the group. In other videos we see a hip-hop focused dance highlighted for him to fully show off as well.
I think this is an example of why BTS is capable of so many different styles in their music videos and appearance. They know how to use the respective abilities of each of their members.

In my humble opinion this is BTS"s masterpiece. Both the song and the mv are high art. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Only BTS could make the fear of losing your muse into something this stunning. I can't imagine what it would be like to as an artist to live and breath for something and then have the passion for it disappear. As Suga says...it would be like a first death. Great reaction. And yes, BTS has proven time and time again that they can master any genre of music. The only label that really works for them is "artists". They live up to BigHit/HYBE's motto of healing and art through music. BTW: Jimin does the shadow dancing in the mv.

And let me tell you, I went through the same thing two years ago when I found them. It was hard for me to wrap my head around how special they truly are and sometimes it still is hard because they are like MAGIC. They are DIFFERENT. Their discography has a little something for everybody. I think a lot of what makes them special is that their label allowed them to be authentic and true to themselves since day 1. Writing and making music that makes THEM happy. They perfect their craft and that’s what makes it so fun to watch everything unfold because just when you think you’ve seen it all, they one up themselves time and time again. Thank you for giving them a chance and thank you for letting their music touch you! 💜

thank you so much for reacting to black swan... I used to not be able to listen to black swan at first, cos it would hurt. too close to home y'know? i was in a long depressed hole, couldn't enjoy my art process, things like that, so the first part of this song would just make me cry and i couldn't finish the song. but fortunately, i'm doing better now, and i can listen to this song fully, without crying. some days it would still hurt, but not as much now. BTS really is a part of my own personal evolution, and i'm sure a lot of ARMY has similar experiences like me.
Please enjoy BTS's music more, talk with other ARMYs more, experience this time together. There is a lot of content to enjoy. The lyricism alone, man, when I tell you they write and produce their own songs. the integrity they hold dear, the commitment to growth, the love they spread. They are a rare breed. The genre IS BTS.

It's a very interesting combination that really draws us in. Much of their older music is very heavily hip hop influenced as they were originally going to be a hip hop group, but then it was decided to make them an idol group. That being said, they are not afraid to create music in numerous genres including: trap, house, hip hop, r&b, pop, etc. Their is something for everyone with BTS. The "...my first death..." line that SUGA sings/raps is a reference to a famous Martha Graham quote: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." This song is purportedly about an artist looking into the future, and at how they'll feel when they no longer have the stage and the fans to look forward to.

Like some other fans have said, we like your reactions. You might enjoy the making of this video where you can see the shadows being done and the full dance that Jimin does. Pronounced like Jim(boys name) and in. What I love about this video is the incorporation of the ballet Black Swan, which is about the black swan representing your inner turmoil or “dark side”. One of the rappers Suga, has talked about the dark side of celebrity and creativity, and the worry of not being able to create anymore, losing the passion for his art. These boys aren’t afraid to sing and talk about truly deep subjects, which why they have such a diverse and loyal fan base. Plus the singing and dancing is banging 😍
I can’t wait for you to see some of the individual works like RM’s joke, Suga’s Agust D stuff and the vocal line songs. I think having 7 members that all have individual talents and tastes makes them something else, undefinable.

This was a masterpiece to me. Yes, Black Swan apparently is based on a movie and/or book that had to do with ballerinas and no longer being able to dance. So, first death is about losing the desire or ability to create and dance as they are now. I think. Jimin is trained in contemporary dance as well as street dance, and I think he puts so much passion into his dancing that I absolutely love it. The others do too. BTS wouldn't be BTS without all 7 of them.

The song is called Black Swan based on the movie Black Swan which is based on the ballet Swan Lake, the white then black outfits represent the White Swan and the Black Swan, the video also makes a lot of references to the Black Swan movie, and u are right, the song is about the fear of losing their passion for music, and experiencing a metaphorical first death, as in the death of their passion and their dream....it can actually mean the fear of losing anything you are passionate about and love to do, it’s really the fear of losing your inspiration, and your creativity or talent, what makes you uniquely you suddenly “dying”, hence the “first death” in the lyrics.....that lyric is actually from a famous quote about losing your love and passion for dancing.....😁💜

now you should listen to "dionysus", as in the god of wine-dionysus. they sing about getting drunk in art. sadly, it doesn't have an mv, but its live performances are epic. or the iconic "blood sweat and tears". you'll figure it out why its iconic when you see it for youself.. anyway, thank you for taking time discovering them.. lots of love from philippines..

Fun fact: every BTS album has an overarching theme, mostly dealing with self love and other deeper stuff. They are very intelligent people, especially Jin who usually comes up with the themes. Swan Lake, while I forgot what album its on, is just a glimpse of what they stand for lyrically.

You are quickly becoming my favorite reactor. You're so insightful and quick with your interpretations! Looking forward to the next one! Airplane pt 2 would be another interesting contrast. Or Anpanman... 😄
