So damn true! I have known a gal in gaming for years now. She has always been conservative in her online persona. As someone whos worked in the service industry for 15 years, I would say the only thing that wasnt accounted for was the day of the week. When Ive worked my restaurants, Ive noticed that I got a higher tip percentage in the beginning of the week vs towards the end (Theory being that Friday was payday and someone who needed to wait until Friday didnt have enough money to begin with and didnt tip as well). I wonder how that played a part in this experiment
As a researcher, I have to note that this experiment wasn't double-blinded. For example, Kari could have been personally happier with the larger breasts, and potentially influencing the customers via demeanor rather than breast size. But as a human being who's seen this happen a million times in a million different contexts, I'm pretty sure it was the boobs and that this would have turned out the same even if it was double-blinded.

I figured this out when I was 16. I did the heavy lifting in a coffee shop, the cute young ladies worked the customers. Since we pooled tips, it worked out for everyone. They didn't have to pick up heavy/ nasty stuff, and I didn't have to deal with customers.

I have worked jobs where tips are common, and tips can vary a lot day by day. It would take a lot more test samples for this to be accurate.

I do believe that Kari's attitude might have actually changed based on how she was treated; psychologically speaking, social interaction is a feedback loop. So, on the "small boobs" day, she felt normal and acted normal and the customers did the same. On the "big boobs" day, however, once she noticed the men fawning over her, she couldn't help but feel amused and perhaps smiled more and had a brighter attitude. This would create a positive feedback loop where she actually gave better service, leading to bigger tips. This variable was certainly not accounted for (or at least, not discussed).

I’m pretty happy with their method, but they should have tracked average tips for the other cashiers as a control. They could also have tried to see if people were changing lines from one cashier to another.

If they really wanted a good experiment, all they have to do is observe the normal staff especially if there are different shapes of women. I work in a restaurant and have noticed that some of the women who may not have the bigger shapes but prettier faces get a bit more than the ones who might have the larger shape but more average face. This also takes into play if the server wears make up. One good thing is most of the girls I work with are mostly within a couple years of each other so that balances out well enough. Sadly, more times than not the really heavy girls don't make as much even if the service is the same.

My problem with this as a study is only running each test once. There are a lot of variables that can cause one business day to be different from the next just because it's a Tuesday vs a Wednesday. Also, coffee shops often have regulars who come in every day, so the fact that on the big boob day Kari was a familiar face could have had an effect. She also might have simply gotten better at the job having worked it three days in a row. Anyone who's worked a new job knows your first day is rough and you screw up a lot. For these numbers to really be meaningful, I'd want at least a week at each cup size.
Would be interesting to break down the breast sizes of the women doing the heavy tipping - there may be a component of empathy

Mr Raptor I am not talking about just tips and giving money away -- I mean it in general. It is a subconscious thing which will direct your behavior. You will be friendlier/nicer to someone perceived to be more reproductively viable. That is the reason behind the greater increase in tips. My point is, it doesn't matter if you don't tip or if you only tip friends/classmates, or what have you -- you will act differently around said individual if they are seen as more reproductively viable....for example, if they have bigger breasts.

Great myth to test. My question would be: Would the tips have been even larger if the cleavage had been more prominent? I tend to believe that if larger breasts that are covered results in larger tips, larger breasts that are somewhat revealed would have brought in even larger tips. I also think a bar might have been an even better environment to make Kari even more money.

If women also tipped more, then that means there were other factors at play here. May be she was unknowingly more cheerful/friendly when she was wearing DDD size (to me she looked like that). Or may be it was simply a chance that more customers paid higher tips that day. You cannot draw conclusions based on one experiment. They should have done it with multiple women & multiple times & made sure that women's own behavior remains exactly the same & all other variables too.
