  • This is a comparison of a modern Bic Criterium 2mm ( amzn.to/3C29hy8 ) leadholder vs the classic Conte Criterium 2603 ( ebay.us/34ZDAc ). Don't miss the built-in lead sharpener in the cap at 6:42!
There is a modern aluminum version as well ( amzn.to/3z1kYDf ) but I haven't tried that yet.

The Original Conte was nice and heavy and felt/was very sturdy. Nice to use and a fav of mine.
The aluminium version of the BIC in comparison feels light and flimsy. It doesn't feel right in the hand.
You pull the back plug out to sharpen the lead and not the other way.

Not super big on pencils but the self sharpening feature is a big selling point for me haha

Lead holders are my jam so this was right up my alley. This gave me some really good history on Bic and OG Criterium. I have definitely seen the OG Criterium before but had no idea about the relation between Bic. I mean, Bic and lead holders were never a connection I made in my brain. I also didn't know Bic was French based!
I'll be honest though, I would absolutely hate using that eraser. It seems too small and inconvenient for the large surfaces I would try to cover with a lead holder.

Yea notice how those erasers are pristine. I’ll never use those

@@unsharpen A good point you mentioned though is that lead holders are very versatile and shouldn't be restricted to a right or wrong way to use them.

This looks like a classic drafting pencil. eg. Mars technico 780. (2mm = 0.078 inches)

I think it's Conté (which is a particular type of crayon bearing the name of it inventor) but I wonder why it's in the pencil.

i don't know which factory produced the firs ones back in 1939, but at a certain point criterium was owned by the brand conté a paris. afterwards it was bought by bic, which produces the two versions, aluminium and plastic. these pens are so popular in france that the word "criterium" is used to say "pen".

@@abilialibi you’re right. In France we always call mechanical pencils critérium because of Conté. This company has been acquired by Bic and they continue to produce Critérium but they are in plastic where the Conté is indestructible. They have been very popular in 70-80s at school.

Interestingly enough, I see BIC products mostly in discount supermarkets like LIDL, they aren't staple of school supply shops, these prefer to sell BIC rip-offs or equivalents like Schneider Slider (really solid pen, by the way, highly recommended), you must go online to big office supply companies for them.
