I was recently re-watching Zindagi Gulzar Hai and the effort which was put in the look of each character is amazing. I don’t know if it was the actors or the director or the producers who took on that responsibility. If you notice, Kashaf and her sisters’ dressing is how a lower middle class girl would be dressed. Their nails are either bare or simple nail polish and small baliyaan. There are no acrylic nails or cartilage piercings in sight, this is very prevalent in dramas these days. Rafia had a broken joota, they showed it. On the flip side, Zaroon’s mom, and sister and Amara are all dressed appropriately to their economic background. This is attention to detail. Simply hats off to that entire team.

Pakistani dramas now have lost a sense of simplicity in their art, it's all becoming about A-list stars and expensive actors. Nobody cares about continuity, production value, and what kind of story it is. They have shown us a middle-class family who owns such a big house where everyone eats and drinks but doesn't work any person living in a city like Karachi knows how expensive life is yet in today's dramas they don't address that. In ZGH, Kasaf talks about Finnace and how it impacts her outlook on life but in today's dramas, reality is just vanishing.

On the flip side, Aamna's cousin wears a hijaab and she looks very "in it", normal and elegant. Dressing " traditionally" is not to be labelled as regressive, or anything else except that it is the CHOICE of that individual. Talking about production quality, it reminds of ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ that made it to the list of top 10 most watched videos in 2022. The attention to detail in that drama is commendable. Kashaf and Zaroon belonged to the different strata of society. In the start of the drama, the way both dressed up, Kashaf’s little to no makeup, the phones that they carried, Kashaf’s styling after her job and marriage-helped the characters to look the part. May be that’s the reason why it has a recurring value.

My issue with yunhi wasn't the first time she called him a terrorist. There are studies that show that most people in foreign environments rely heavily on mental shortcuts (I.e. stereotypes) to decode and protect themselves in it. My issue was her going on about it in the car after her father literally says "he is my cousin's son" and "don't be stupid." At that point she had the facts, so she should have apologized or remained quiet if she thought he didn't hear her.
She will clearly be the person that will rightly call out the sexism in that household so why depict her as an airhead and Islamophobe in the first scene. Women's rights are not contrary to Islamic teachings.

I am an Indian Hindu and honestly even I didn’t like that scene when Maya’s character called him terrorist. I was a bit shocked when she said that and i have to agree that the accent and dressing was entirely off. I had a hard time connecting to the character. Either Maya should have worked hard to adopt that American accent or they could have casted a different actress altogether for this role. In my opinion , someone like Ushna Shah would have been a better choice as she naturally has a Canadian English accent which is quite similar to the American one. Attention to such details is a must when you are showing such characters. Just my opinion ✌🏻

I recently watched Dhoop Kinarey. In one scene, Marina Khan's character stays at the hospital the entire night. Near the morning, when she's asked to wash her face and come, her face is without any trace of make-up, and her eyes look sleepless. I don't know how they gave that puffy and a bit swollen look to her eyes, but that's how actually a person looks when he/she is awake all night. These days, no matter what happens to a female character, her make-up and hair are as if she has just come from the beauty parlor.

In drama Akbari Asghari, Imran Abbas is shown as a moulvi to be married to his cousin in England. When the parents and the cousin, ( Sanam Balouch ) come to Pakistan and see him they are totally shocked, and say, “is ne kia hulia bana liya”. How will they introduce him as their son in law in England. He would be called Taliban. Asghari shows her disgust looking at him. It was a hearted drama, and the scenes looked hilarious. No issue was made about stereotyping moulvis or showing them in a bad light. Later they showed him in a positive manner. Today due to social media, people make an issue of everything.

Seems like the trend set by express tv is being caught by big channels too. Mini series, diverse content is making this year the best for our dramas. Maybe the reviewing shows, SH and others made a difference making the drama writers realise and bringing about a change. Similar scripts, dragging by increasing episodes, toxicity, all seem to be taking a reverse gear these days. Throughly enjoying present dramas with varied stories and issues, having progressive, positive heroes, 6 episode dramas are a cherry on the cake.

Also, the locals have no idea what side benefits they will be losing. Our actors are definitely top notch world class actors who have to fight thru every step of their way & much more so for our female actors.
On transatlantic flights ppl always wear comfortable clothing mostly joggers & sweats. ( Juicy Couture is so 90s' Aamna :)) ) Business / first class usually wear non branded stuff. Bags maybe, but very rarely will I see luxury brands clothing. It's more the new money ppl ( Naw daulatiay) who will flaunt their brands. People are way more concerned abt thr 27 plus hour journey ahead from US and 15 hr. plus from Europe etc. Never have I ever seen anybody in tight jeans & definitely NEVER aa blazer. Showing off your clothing brand is also very outdated now. If you have a high end luxury bag/ accessory please don't show it off so blatantly as they do in Pakistan, it's quite vulgar seriously. Watching Saba Qamar in Sar e Rah the thing that kept distracting me was her pristine image. It was just Saba Qamar driving a taxi, not the character herself. Her spotless, well pressed clothes, manicured, perfect nails was a bit much. I SO miss Mehreen Jabbar dramas. Mehreen Jabbar is a perfectionist in this regard. Our actors / directors mostly care abt how their heroine looks instead of caring abt the character itself. Vanity really is the quicksand of reason.

The whole stereotype discussion around daoud’s character is so pointless. Me and my husband are both pakistani who were born and raised in europe and we both come home from Work ( i am a Doctor and he is a lawyer) and we change into our shalwar kameez because we feel More comfortable That way at home. My dad who has been living in germany for 35 years goes to Jumma Prayers dressed like That. And seriously if you have ever been to the UK you will See a lot of desi People being dressed like That.
Having Said that… i completely agree with Amna that the « terrorist » remark was completely uncalled for esp. With all the islamophobia we face abroad every day.
I understand it was meant to be funny and might have Been necessary to create a misconception in Kim’s head about daoud’s character. But they could have achieved that with That taxi-driver remark as well cause most taxi drivers MIGHT be dressed like That in pakistan as shalwar kameez is our Qoumi Libas. Nothing wrong with That.

I’ve seen a lot of comments that are very happy the actors and crew, which included elders and little kids, got attacked. I don’t think mob violence should never be encouraged or praised, ever. It’s quite scary how much of a mob mentality our people have and are quick to attack the ‘other’ or people on suspicion only or encourage or hype it up. Reminds me of the 2 Sialkot incidents. The attack on the actors was not just because of the noise issue, but because people think how dare they film things in our locations because the people attacking are usually riled up by someone and it could be them being against dramas, films, actors etc. Faysal Qureshi touched on this topic in a podcast actually & explained lots of places refuse filming of dramas because they think actors are not good people or they’re doing something morally wrong. Fair enough, but it was quite insightful to see that whereas actors are so famous in our country the stigma they still carry of being morally very bad people just for the line of work they’re in, is quite the oxymoron to see. Also, I’m sure the production must seek permission before shooting in the first place?

I worked on a Netflix production that had over a hundred background artists. There was a team of wardrobe, hair and makeup just for background. Keep in mind background artists are never featured on screen. Each background extra had a story and their hair / nails / eyelashes /clothes / props had to match the story. It really disappoints me to see when principle actors in Pakistani dramas don’t show the same attention to detail

    • @zaraazeem5408

Netflix is xtremely professional & definitely has a huge budget, plus the value of Pakistani Rupee getting on a daily basis doesn't help. Also, producers mostly spend on themselves & then on their lead / big name actors paycks & think they're done. The rest of the crew, they couldn't care less. How else would they be able to buy multiple luxury cars, bags, clothes etc. Income level is hugely disproportionate b/w actors & the rest of the crew kindda like what our designers have done to our kaarigars. Attention to detail is the least of their concerns. I just cringe the way they speak Urdu nowadays, It's absolutely pathetic. It's very ghetto Urdu that we hear in Pakistani dramas today. very sad.

@@zaraazeem5408 some responsibility falls on the actors too. They are all getting their hair makeup done eg. Kim coming from US, obviously money was spent on this look, her hair/ makeup / clothes etc. Why was the achieved look still not believable? Lack of commitment to the character, lack of research done on how a person would look after a 14 hour flight. Her look did not match her story. Same with Saba Q looking too polished in Sar-w-rah

Your statement doesn't say that the Netflix actors were doing this work themselves, so why are you 'disappointed' that Pakistani actors are not doing for themselves what a team did for the Netflix actors??? This is the problem with people who use Netflix as an example. You are not comparing a like-for-like situation. Be realistic!!

It seems like their goal is more to look “good” then look how that CHARACTER would in THAT situation.
I am not saying Pak dramas can afford a team for background extras like Netflix, obviously. But at least the main actors who already have teams can use common sense / do research for their character

I totally agree with Amna's views on Maya's accent and styling. I don't agree with people comparing it with Mahira's accent in TLOMJ as they are completely different things. TLOMJ wasn't based on reality but in a world of its own with no standard to compare with. However Maya's lack of accent is important here because it is part of her character, she doesn't look convincing as an overseas Pakistani. She looks more like herself. Bilal on the other hand looks more the part with normal shalwar qameez not the fitted kurta pajama and Johny Bravo hairstyle that many other actors do when they play middle class ordinary Pakistani man. Ahmad Ali Akbars demeanor, his walk, posture, dressing played an important part in making his character so relatable and real despite story moving away from reality in "parizaad".
I like the drama "Yunhi" and I hope that somehow story's focus shifts from her coming from abroad(as an overseas Pakistani her poor depiction takes away from her performance for me).

I mean c’mon the west is copying/adopting our designs, our sherwanis, veil, embroidered designs, makeup and even our cuisine and music … and here our writers/actors/dramas are showing this. These people need to get out of this complex. We should take pride in our identity. And even if he was wearing surma so what … if Johnny/rockstars can wear smoky eyes and kohl it’s all good if our men wear it, then label as a terrorist no matter how … the hypocrisy! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who decides that wearing a traditional outfit makes one backward or like a terrorist. Also, agar hum chahte hain ke log stereotype na kerein, toh humein khud stereotype nahi kerna chahiye. It’s as simple as that.

The Urdu accent seeps through the actors’ English, even if it’s just a word and it is so off-putting. In addition to those you’ve mentioned in the video-Mariam and Hamza (who was Australia return) in MH. Meerub, who is shown to be a city girl in Tere bin also has these issues.
The articulation and pronunciation of words, for eg., impress-> empress etc should be worked upon.
Our actors are such hard workers, they should give some time to pronunciation and articulation too. ❤
Similar is the case of posh actors playing LMI. This is an issue across dramas, can’t single out one coz all have the problem.
ZGH aced these challenges IMO. The transition of Kashaf and her family is palpable and how. Kashafs look changes when she becomes an officer, she has nail paint, a watch, those Pearl studs. And then the transformation post wedding. These little things make huge difference.

I mean has anyone seen Tár and the lengths the brilliant Cate Blanchett went to, to prepare for her role to play an acclaimed conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic. She hired piano teachers, conductors, movement coaches and German dialect coaches herself. Not for one second you question that authenticity, the fabric, the interwoven unique, idiosyncrasies that come with being a conductors to an acclaimed orchestra. Similarly, there are certain traits, idiosyncrasies that come with being a Pakistani American.

I recall Wahaj Ali telling us how he tried to perfect the Bengali accent for Jo bichar, but just like you don’t have drama schools, nor additional support for the actors, in Pakistan, this support is found in Hollywood, where budgets are assigned to assist the actor in getting into the skin of the character! cate Blanchett has that support,as was Colin Firth in The Kings speech , or Charlize Theron in the monster! It’s not left only to the actor, and there is a whole industry of voice and accent coaches to cosmetic artist, costume designers! Even the British Indian actor Dev Patel was sent to australia with a voice coach helping him perfect his Australian accent to do the film The Lion( which he said was really hard to do)! I’m just impressed at the myriad of talent you have in your actors, it’s time they are supported!

Tbh I know people who wear sweats on the flights but change when the plane is about to land. So commenting on her outfit was a bit out there. I would’ve loved to give my two cents on Maya’s accent cause I had doubts but the background score was a little high for me to even hear her dialogues properly. Also people who live outside of Pakistan are way more in tuned with what’s going on in Pakistan than people think. If they had shown them coming from a European non English speaking country the accent wouldn’t have been an issue at all. Because they all have accents in English. And people did go to other countries besides US for med schools. I found the t word jarring because most Muslims who’ve lived in the US post 9/11 wouldn’t use the word lightly, no matter the context. Yes it would’ve been believable had she just commented on Dawood’s attire or looked at it funny. Also Buffalo is no where near the Bible Belt lol.

Yumna, a gorgeous adaakaara, should definitely put in some thought into her looks as well. Her styling seems to be outsourced to the production team which doesn’t put much thought into it. She’s a rich asf bride yaar but her trousseau except the maroon red suit of the last episode is nothing but underwhelming. The less said about the wedding look the better.
