I remember when this building and arena first opened up 40 years ago in October 1983. It was state of the art for it's time back then, was the envy of the NHL league, and played a huge success in use for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Over the years the building has gone through renovations and suffered a lot of damage during the June 2013 historic flooding event natural diaster. Today sadly the building and arena is one of the oldest in the NHL (only MSG in NYC is older, but has a billion dollars in renovations), and is the laughing stock of the NHL. Players on both the Flames and opposing teams are embarrassed to play there, dressing rooms are a joke, etc., and now the concrete roof is crumbling. When the Flames finally move into their new modern state of the art arena in a few years from now, it's gonna be sad when the Saddledome is demolished either by controlled detonation or the wrecking ball and escavoraters. Whenever that happens, I'm sure it's gonna be highly emotional for many Calgarians. Personally I feel that the City of Calgary should save, repair, preserve and designate the Saddledome a historic site, I'm sure the Calgary Stampede will find a use for the building, but due to financial responsibility, I highly doubt that will happen, the Saddledome will be eventually demolished.

As an Oiler fan, thanks for the background on this landmark. Too bad it will likely be demolished, as you stated.

I remember a time in the not so distant past this was a little nicer than the Coliseum in Edmonton, but Rogers is no contest the better arena.
