- It all began with a cup of tea. Netflix's miniseries about the real-life experiences of a bartender who becomes the object of a woman's crazed stalking obsession was one of the most compelling and interesting shows I've seen in quite some time. Believe that.

Jessica Gunning was incredibly chilling as Martha, she completely disappeared into the role, making you simultaneously pity and fear her.
Best case scenario, she's the nice version of what you see here. Pity the lass. But if Rebel and Adele can do it so can she.
I have been saying this, she nailed it, without her being as good as she is, this show would never be the hit it is.
Your comment struck me beautifully, I fully agree.
@@darthkek1953 Have you watched the show? Because her weight isn't ever really mentioned in it or is an issue, that's not why Donnie or the audience pity her.
She frightened me in every single scene because I too was starting to feel sorry for her only to realise I'd been duped when she turns on him.
Jessica Gunning's acting in this series is mind blowing
She's also great in The outlaws
probably wasnt acting
@@a.cobbaut9711She is! And oh my god, so funny. A world away from this. Definitely an actress who goes full pelt into a role, whether it's farcical or serious.
@@a.cobbaut9711 _The Outlaws_ is an underrated show. I really liked the way it poked fun at all different political ideologies, whilst also being sympathetic towards the characters who hold them.
The conversation at the end with his parents and his dad being able to relate to his trauma was upsetting. Had me fighting back tears
Totally unrealistic. Both bonding over being bummed 🤢🤦🏻♂️😂

Slightly lightened, for me, with his dads parting words to him shouting through the train window “GOOD LUCK WITH THE TRANSEXUAL”
I can't fathom that Richard Gadd played a fictional version of himself in this show. Absolutely mad. What a performance and what a way to confront and acknowledge your past.
Or create your own version of what actually happened.
I've never seen a better portrayal of what being the victim inside of an abusive relationship actually looks and feels like. The shame, the mistakes - the raw honesty with which the show approaches things was incredible. I thought it was a masterpiece in storytelling.
Because he's the real guy that went through it.
Oh aye such a victim, he went back to get rapped again& again& went out his way to date a trans …but he isn’t gay
It's because the actor playing Donny is the author of the story and Donny himself, Baby Reindeer is effectively his way way of doing therapy.
Stopped watching when he realized the dude was touching him and he decided to keep doing drugs with him. Little bitch behavior.
I am genuinely afraid to watch it....

I read an article by a British female philosophy professor who writes about toxic patriarchy and although she admits that men can be victim of abuse she needs to point out how a story like that can take away from the abuse women suffer, like victims are caught in some zerosumgame. And on top of that she talks about the female actress and her body weight implying how it reinforces stereotypes of plus sized bodies... and then there is this review.
I would say it is remarkable that the enlightened academic can't see behind the tropes and her own viewpoint whereas the toxic alt right grifter gives a balanced view on the male part and has nothing but praise for the actress who plays the female part, not even once mentioning her appearance, because you know it doesn't matter as she commands the screen with her acting abilities. But then again, it is 2024 and by now I know who I`d rather be in the woods with...
You didn't need to write anything beyond... "British female philosophy professor." That told us everything we needed to know.
Yeah, I too would rather be in th woods with a bear than a feminist academic.
Brilliantly expressed.
This is why I'm here. I could be the posterboy for the progressive movement: due to my education and experiences I say things that many would consider 'woke', I was bullied for nonconformity, etc. Yet drinker's reviews generally align with me and I think he's genuinely about storytelling as art, not posturing.
Echo chamberlain did an amazing asstearing on Hellofutureme after the guy attacked drinker and co. (even little platoon, a gay guy) in a video, calling them the usuals. Echo is a self proclaimed left winger yet he says in that reaction video that he much rather hangs out with these people than the activist 'reviewers' on the other side. Echo calls those activists identity junkies, which is quite apt I think.

This is one of strangest tv shows i have ever watched.
It goes from funny and light to dark and gritty, to sex abuse, self hate, mental issues, inability to understand yourself, feeling like you don't belong anywhere , complete lack of ability to feel happiness, lack of direction in life, grooming, drugs, wrong decisions etc.
Just flat out crazy show. But also shows that people are complex but also fundamentally flawed and have incredible ability to self destruct
Same thoughts. This is what they mean when they talk about peeling back layers. This was such an experience!
I usually watch shows in 30 minute increments because that's how damaged my attention span is, even shows with hour long episodes I leave them to do something else, even if i'm not bored. This, THIS, is the first show i've ever watched in a single sitting, truly a once in a lifetime event.
I put episode one on, when i got it to bed and fell asleep right away. I woke up at 3:15am and watched the whole thing back to back.
Wow!
You know why? You relate with the protagonist whose mind is f*ckd up like yours
This show was traumatizing and poetic. Masterfully done and incredible acting. This show should win awards.
They were all perverts. He let it happen. It wasn't trauma. It was consensual.
This series was SO unsettling and disturbing! I had to watch something happy and funny for a while afterwards. lol
Same for me and my partner
When you have to watch a horror film after this to cheer you up a little
See, this is why we men must choose the Bear!🐻
I prefer to pick meeting a fellow man in the woods.
I'm ashamed to say my wife picked the bear....no matter what logic you throw at her....she picked the bear.
It's worth noting my wife was sexually abused by a 40 year old holistic healing therapist when she was 13 years old. His fingers went into her vagina as part of the "healing" process. She complained IMMEDIATELY to the authorities who did nothing because it was her word against his.
As long as it is not a white American gender studies female.
I dont know. She looked pretty bear-like.
@@Ghalaghor_McAllistor ...who is overweight? ...and hairy & gay? Otherwise known as... a Bear.
I’ve been stalked by a girl before and yes it’s very accurate to the paranoia and stress
It's a horrible situation. Been there a couple of times. Makes you appreciate some of the crap women go through with that
It can get super crazy. I had that happen in the mid 90s. Lived in an apartment building with locked entry and she would follow people in and camp out at my front door, knocking endlessly. It was an older building with those iron fire escapes and she would climb out on it, knocking on my windows. Showed up at restaurants and bars I might visit with my friends on weekend nights. Followed my girlfriend around too. She was a fellow employee at a company I worked, with 900 employees and when they implemented internal, electronic messaging, would constantly send me messages about how we were soul mates and other crazy things; those eventually got her fired when I turn them over to my boss and HR. I think the entire debacle lasted about a year.
Add to that that if you, as a man, lash out even just verbally at her, or, rightfully defend yourself if things get physical, depending on the location and how many people the psycho has around her little finger, you'll be the bad guy, too.
Unexpectedly great series. I cant believe how vulnerable and honest Gadd was to put this in front of the world first with his stage play now this
The fact he’s basically reliving his own experiences writing the show and playing himself is some feat I didn’t think a lot of people would be able to do, takes some honesty and determination to do what he did for this show
“Choy-sees” 😅
Simultaneously "appalled and fascinated" is spot on.
Just love this TV show. Acting is top notch
So creepy, it’s shocking that the show managed to make me feel sorry for Martha while being frightened of her.
Jessica Gunning's acting was superb and the story was gripping right the way to the end.
Her Scottish accent is brilliant, I never would have guessed she is actually English
NEITHER DID THE REAL MARTHA 😮😮
Best thing I've seen this year. Watched it all in 1 night. The acting was really, really good.
Nothing about this show makes me want to watch it.
It’s one of the best character studies about trauma I have ever seen. I didn’t see the appeal at first and held off watching it but it’s an incredible show. Don’t let your hatred of trans or whatever your weird problem is get in the way of watching this.
@@thereportoftheweek787 who said anything about trans? I spoke to someone who watched it and they said there are some pretty disturbing scenes of sexual abuse. Between that and the witch-hunt to out the real abuser, it’s just not something I want to watch.
The "reunion" Donny had with Darrien inthe last episode still gets me. How being back in the Lions Den like that reduces him to a Deer in Headlights again. He can't speak, or form defiant disagreement or vengeance against Darrien.
I was initially perplexed by that. Why didnt he confront Darrien about everything, why didnt he lose it in front of him in ways he told Martha to get lost at times? The outpouring of all the pent up rage, hate, grief.
I understand it is showing how the abuser still has "control" over Donny interms of reducing him back of sorts, to that same state of mind despite some time being passed. I get it. 👍But I found myself almost yelling at the screen at the same time, urging Donny to at least react and respond in a way for some sort of closure.
What you were expecting to happen is the romanticized version of what should have happened in the best case scenario. This show goes deeper that that. I understand your frustration because I felt the same thing many times during this show. But I bet 8 times out of 10 the reaction you were expecting to see never happens. And what was here portrayed is the real thing. I would't know because I've never been in that position but it felt human and broken and we all are broken in some way or another.
@@enkiitu 👍 Good Points well made. I knew Donny wasnt going to suddenly become John Wick and violently claim his revenge via a series of stylish beatings upon Darrien, but I initially was rooting for the guy to say something, anything to give him an upper hand. Have him walk outta there feeling that he confronted his horrific past and left the room with a weight lifted from him.
But as you said, that, in most realistic cases that doesnt happen. I have thankfully no idea about the horrid connection to Darrien and loss of control Donny still had here, but yes I understand the scene more from talking about it, watching it again.
The usual romanticized version of closure is what I and others would have liked to see, as it would have been that way on other shows. 👍But yes indeed it sadly isnt always like that.
i am thankfully not a victim of sa or stalking but i have a similar personality as donny. i'm afraid to get angry or set boundaries because i'm afraid of further confrontation with other people. donny doesn't have the strength to fight the assholes in his life possibly due to his upbringing. i think he was lonely as a child and probably bullied and if he stood up for himself he would only get in trouble. this would explain donny's behaviour throughout the whole story. he is passive and it's never going to change.
@@tonis6347 👍 Excellent comment. I understand that feeling. Being repressed and polite and quiet in the face of confrontation or arguement. Thinking that, if Im being nice, or friendly towards somebody who is being an asshole to me, then the "act" of being co'operative and sound will diffuse the situation. Killing the tension with kindness.
Only, afterwards, it can build up and release in other ways. Ive a lot of incidents with some people whereby I let them away with saying something snide and attacking to me. Id laugh it off. But alone later on, Id reprise the incident in my head, thinking out how Id liked to have said things, re'enacting it in my mind, delivering killer blows of verbal vengeance.
I can thus think that, facing an abuser after some time, despite instigating the reunion as Donny did inthe finale, I might too loose my words, retreat within and hold back under fear of confrontation.
Stop being soft. Don't fall for it. He wasnt assaulted and he wasn't abused. He knew exactly what Derrian was after and he went and let him do it.
This is one of those shows I fell in love with from the first episode. The storytelling is epic, and the characters are believable. It's my favorite series so far. Great review, drinker. 🎉
From minute one the wroting and acting had me hooked. The hype is real
Why do i get "Misery" vibes from the Martha gal?
So did I, it was giving me an Annie Wilkes vibe.
Lets hope she hasn't got a sledgehammer
Absolutely agree 100% drinker! As a mother of girls that were victimized by their predatory female cousin I think this they most accurate and realistic portrayal of how trauma effects humans. How contradictory and confusing it can be. It changes you and the way you see the world and yourself. This was such a brave and effective storytelling, best piece of television I watched in years. The acting was so incredibly well done that I was honestly disturbed and felt everything the actors were going though. Hard to watch especially if you or your loved ones went through it but also validating. Glad you loved it too! Great minds think alike!
I didn't expect this show to turn so dark. I watched almost all of it yesterday, and had to fight back tears. Jessica nailed her role tho! Its a really good drama.
Episode 4 (or was it 5?) where he gets groomed by that guy was a hard watch
Kinda insane that people criticize the “he did this to himself” argument when he literally did, several times. And what’s worse it’s always under the guise of seeking approval even though he has several loving people in his life he just throws away. Gadd is a grifter and it’s crazy to say this show was a stroke of genius when he literally just acted out his own life experiences. Would it be so crazy to say maybe he allowed himself all of this suffering in the hopes it would get him famous?
There's no evidence he was even stalked.
Totally agree, I rarely binge watch shows, preferring an episode or two a day. But Baby Reindeer had me gripped from the get go and watched it all in one sitting.
I couldn’t make it past episode three. I just couldn’t take how uncomfortable it made me feel.
And why can't you sit in a little discomfort? What's going to happen, really, if you feel uncomfortable?
You quit just before episode 4 which is easily the most difficult watch. I could barely make it through.
I was utterly moved and totally blown away by this masterpiece.
The show was phenomenal. It even got huge laughs out of me through all the drama. "Can't take my mother anywhere" 😂
Was a great meditation on trauma and how it can effect relationships.
Just finished this show right before you uploaded this. Incredibly written covering some serious topics in a thoughtful manner without trying to push something on the audience. It presents an honest view of his experiences and lets you determine what the fuck was going on instead of telling you.
Not the feel good Christmas movie I was expecting 😭😭😭 lol
Lololololol
Jessica Gunning was channeling her inner Cathy Bates
Absolutely great show.
Hopefully that will shine some light on sexual abuse and how it affects victims. "Buy why didn't you go to the police straight away", "but why did you come back", why this, why that. Applying logic from afar is easy. But if you are in the situation, there is no logic, the victims brain is fried by the act, all rational goes to hell. Messes with your perception of everything - from sexuality to future encounters with predators. Like a stalker for example.
Yeah. Wow. This was an amazing show. All around, top to bottom.
Choices can lead down 1000 different paths and not all of them good. A friend of mine recommended this to me and it shows that both sides of the gender spectrum can become victims of abuse and can have a dark cloud of shame looming over them and can make mistakes that can lead down and even darker path.
I rise a glass to the performers especially to Jessica Gunning who can give Kathy Bates a run for her money.
I LOVED this show! I wish Netflix would make more of these
Let's not forget what the "victim" really wanted was fame and he literally did anything to get it, and then blamed drugs.
Thanks for the review Drinker.
I'm glad that you and others are really enjoying it. It's seems like it resonates with a lot of people.
I guess I'm one of the few not interested in what sounds like a miserable slog through a stranger's trauma.
Agreed. Same here.
If people enjoy it, great. I didn't. All the characters, major and minor, came across to me as generally unlikeable, with little charisma or appeal. I know they're meant to be normal and the subject matter is bleak, but I don't know, it's not for me.
@@SpaceshipRocketFuelit was disgusting and full of “the message” as is the case with all Netflix swill. Very surprised the drinker didn’t pick up on that
What's even more bizarre as how people keep talking about how "real" and "authentic" this show is. As if the average person's life is filled with drug abuse, r*pe, trannies, stalking, and self hatred. Utterly miserable people and very unrelatable.

CHOI SEES.
Nobody ever talks about psychotic women, unless to find ways to blame men for it.
Even the victim in this story twists himself into knots to blame himself and take pity on her.
@@buzzardbeatniks Yep. The conditioning starts at birth.
They used to do it more convincingly with movies like Misery. But women being abusers has become a sort of no no subject for some reason. Abusers should have the light shone on them no matter who they are.
Hence the villain sympathetic back story trope being shoe-horned into every story. It's grooming for the universal excuse.
@@kri249 NOTHING can ever be a woman's fault. There has to be a man--be he ten years ago or ten-thousand miles away. And if there are no men, it's the _absence_ of men: "he daddy wudn't around!" and "why are men refusing to mentor female trainees?" and such.

I loved this show but you are correct, it's not an easy watch
Was a great series.
The Mrs. had this show on and I had no intention whatsoever of watching it. I was just playing my game, peeking over once in a while, making snarky remarks about the characters and their choices. Long after the Mrs. fell asleep and I couldn't find the remote, I kept watching and listening. By the time the show was ending I had paused the game to actually watch the conclusion with my undivided attention. The show is a mucked up rollercoaster ride/ train wreck of a situation that is very compelling once you get into the latter episodes.
Really enjoyed this show & I can’t think of anything quite like it ..

I absolutely loved this show. Watched it and wasn’t expecting anything from it. But it dark, gritty, and very dramatic. Both the main cast where fantastic in their roles
It's so disgusting how people see this story and want a season two or stalk the creator to see where they can find the people on the show. Like it's so annoying.
Really? Why would you tell the 'true story' and not expect people to try and find out more? Perhaps if you were naive to the point of being lobotomised, you might not have considered this before writing, airing and promoting the show.
Did you just make that up..?
@scott_d_owens That's him to a tee. "Oh no, This man wants to f#ck me. I'd better go round his place and take drugs with him. Oh no, he ended up f#cking me." "Im not gay. I'm going to date a man." You missed the part where the trans person was outraged that someone would create a fiction about their life.
He can’t bring up the trans woman. He’ll piss off his audience
@@alanrainwater8248 No lad, it's that the trans people have an open contract to get angry with their friends whenever they aren't mentioned directly - example A being yourself, keep up the good work playing into your programming routines. Trans inclusion wouldn't be poopooed if it weren't for the religious fixation media has on milking them for topical relevance, and also all those kids pressured into a lifetime of pill use, and also all the effort put into shoring up the community's image so people feel ashamed for pointing out facts no other group could be associated with and emerge unscathed. That's what happens when corporations pick a messiah; they go for profitable, virally transmissible, and easily swayed by meaningless signs of approval. The way the pills zonk your long term focus helps with the angry body shield aspect as well, good for manipulating group reactions to news stories.

Sadly the media is taking her side, blaming him, and saying she’s misunderstood and even he irl got involved sadly more dismal of male victims
I gotta say after watching the show I'm on her side too
Ahem, white male victims, never forget the white bit, if he was black or brown he would be treated with the same kid gloves the woman is by the mainstream/leftist media, even if he was in fact a predator of some sort.
Why it's easy to see how evil they are. Not hiding it those in the media.
When i saw her interview with piers morgan, id became pretty clear that gadd story is actually real.
Stop watching that trash msm.
This is a most frustrating experience, in a good and bad way. It's frustrating in a good way as we see the protagonist making the worst possible decisions, not learning from his mistakes and using the good will of those who are trying to help him. It's also frustrating in a horrible way, when we realise this is an actual person reliving his trauma and mistakes for exposure and money and, maybe, so that he can get a reaction out of his abusers.
Richard Gadd is truly courageous to reenact his harrowing real life experience of being stalked. I hope that there were plenty of emotional support counsellors on the set to help with any possible PTSD.
Seriously are these bots? The same stupid comments appear under every video about this series within minutes.
Nope. He's an utterly unremarkable narcissist, taking the only interesting thing that ever happened to him and trying to milk it for vainglory from comments such as yours. The other actors - great! The direction (which wasn't Gadd) - great. The story - hugely important in these times. Gadd himself? He can fuck off.
Wee need more series like this that show that women can also be dangerous and troubled. Violence towards men is often disregarded as unthreatening or not as important as violence towards women.
Episode 4 was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to sit through. The last thing I watched that made me feel that claustrophobic was “The Body” on Buffy.
yeahh but it was clear what was going to happen... the way it played out was so painfully awkward... very uncomfortable... perhaps not completely necessary to be that graphic, but at the end of the day, it's also what differentiates the show from others out right now.
I watched the first two episodes and was disturbed. Drinker makes me want to give it another chance, though.
Wait til you get to the 4th and 6th episode. It was pretty heavy but I'm glad I watched it and would recommend it.
3 episodes in and I can't continue watching this drama of two horrible people. I am more than willing to accept character flaws but the two main characters are nothing but flaws. Great acting, cinematography, etc.. can't get me past these two miserable people. I found myself rooting one or both of them killed each other by jumping in the river.
Why didn’t this get a main video on the Drinker channel? I’ve seen you give middling reviews to lesser stuff there, this thing is fantastic.

Compelling & traumatic viewing which I couldn’t wait for it to end. Only now I’m following it up with interviews to see where the truth lays in this ‘true story’ drama.
it starts strong with episode 1, where you get a misery vibe and then goes to shit(turns into a netflix show I guess). It's recommended for episode 1 probably.
