Feel The Stance | Test Session on Hopes 155mm Crank Arms

  • Hope Technology have released their shortest crank arm length to date, a whopping 10mm shorter than the previous shortest option. Joe set about testing them and figuring out the pro's and con's to the new set up.
    With crank length affecting all sorts, from the ability to twist your body in corners, the effectiveness of half pedal strokes, the ability to fit in pedal strokes between obstacles, pedal clearance from the ground, the peddling motion and general overall stance on the bike.
    A fully wet day out and a great outcome from the testing. Much fun was had.

    Great vid Joe, conditions looked like Inners at the weekend there!! I run the 165MM Hope's myself and have always liked the shorter ones, might give the 155's try when it's time to change.

    i swapped from 170's to 5dev 155's. had to swap my 32t for a 28T ring. back end is a sram xg1295 - all's well. far less pedal strikes, for sure. and my legs feel like im pedaling in a nice, smooth circle, instead of stomping out small fires.

    So by running shorter cranks, you could potentially run a longer travel dropper post. I like this. Do the cranks use a standard BB or are Hope being a bit non industry again and so you can only use a Hope BB? Hope bearings are good, but not great and Chris King has a break even in about 3 years based on £40 per year on hope bearings.

    • @joebarnes_hazzardracing2913
      @joebarnes_hazzardracing2913  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly. You can then run more drop on the post. for eg. for me One-Up dropper can change in 10mm increments so I can just run a longer drop post and keep the same descending height. I had in the back of my mind that 180 was to much for my ride so now with it up 10mm it is essentially a 170 dropper old money but still 180 drop, I'll stick with that.
      yea, 30mm axel on Hope cranks. So needs a hope BB. Plus side is its easy to tap in new bearings and they last i think way longer that shimano and sram as it is. I have never used Chris King.

    • @_Diggery
      @_Diggery ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly this - my wife demo'd a bike in medium with 175 cranks and the slammed 150 dropper was just too high for her. Got them to swap the cranks to 165 and it effectively "lowered" the saddle for a perfect fit.

    I use/run 175 mm cranks, I have ridden 175 mm cranks for years and that feels good to me. I thought 165 mm cranks where short so these 155 mm cranks seem weird to me bu something I am interested in trying. Maybe it will feel like kids bike cranks to me at first because I am so used to 175 mm cranks

    stupid to even talk about this, even a year later unless your gonna shell out close to 300 dollars or more for hope crank set you wont be able to buy them. Currently they are out of stock everywhere. Seems stupid to me if its unattainable to most people. Absolutely hate my 170mm that came stock on my Polygon T7. They are too long, they slam into everything on tech climbs, the stance feels way off im 5'8" on a medium frame and I can see having my stance closer together being a game changer. Oh well, 300 Dollars for fucking cranks is way out of my budget. Hell I could get a CNC machinest to make me custom ones almost cheaper. Someone should start pumping these out, great business. 160, and 165mm cranks are hard to find for MTB too...Just saying. I hate all these mountain bikers that are "Pros" most yall if you actually mountain bike know most of this shit is unattainable, or you wont ever be that good for it to matter...
