  • The Honda e is impossibly cute, beautifully engineered and crammed with tech… but you’ll pay for it. Yep, for episode three of our new in-depth EV review format, Top Gear Magazine's Ollie Kew gives you the full low-down on Honda’s titchy little electric city car, the Honda e. How far will it go? How fast is it? What does it weigh? And where does the knotted cable go? All these questions and more are answered in this episode of Top Gear Tested.

It’s so much fun every day. (The only problem for me is that you can’t turn the traction control off or into a sportier setting.)

      That is just about EVERY SINGLE review of the Honda e. It's is "beat" by just about every single vehicle in it's class, and it's not even much of a contest.That said, you will likely look at this, find it cute as hell and want one.
      It's something of a design darling. I rather respect that Honda simply had the balls to do it and stand by it.

    Drove one a month or two ago and loved it. It was really quite chuckable and quick at real world speeds. It was also reasonably comfortable in the back behind my 5'4" missus, and really comfortable in the front. The range I also found to be better than some reports - driving at suburban speeds, motorways etc it was very happy and stuck to a total range of around 100-110 miles. It's not ideal for everyone, but it's really interesting and very capable, with enough range for the vast majority of people.

    When you have one you feel like a minor celebrity. I've been sitting in a car park when people have come up to talk to me about it. I was following a McLaren in Liverpool and a child came out of a shop and his head was flicking from side to side as he tried to take in both cars as we passed by! I didn't expect such a strong reaction, but they're still rare and unusual. Great fun to drive as well.
    Got one on lease with salary sacrifice. Because of the electric car tax breaks in the UK that makes it fairly cheap, overall, as a second car for commuting. It's the first car my wife and I always grab unless we're going a long way or need to carry a lot of stuff.

    I'm in the process buying a Honda e here in Germany. I do own a Smart-E so I know the downside of low range but I do understand that it's only in my head as these cars are only used for the city or as a secondary car. This review hits exactly my thoughts on the purchase of the Honda e - I know I don't need it and it makes no sense - but I really want one badly. This is one of the cars you purchase with your heart and emotions - not with the head. Since EVs came out, I lost that feeling - the Honda e actually brings all the emotions back to me and I can't wait to get it. Thanks for this great and flawless review!

      New cars are and always will be expensive. Especially if the technology is cutting edge. If they weren't expensive, so many people wouldn't be financing them. There are plenty of people out there who can afford this, otherwise Honda wouldn't greenlight it for production. Just because you can't afford it, doesn't mean other people won't be interested in a quirky vehicle like this.

    I've had a blue Honda e Advance for three months now and 2000 miles, 1500 of which were done in the first three weeks. Quite easily the best car I've owned, (inc. 2009 Mk2 Focus RS, 2010 Jag XF, 2010 Mazda 3 (my previous favorite), 2003 Mini Cooper S, 2011 Fiesta, 1994 560 SEL etc)
    Highlights include the shear quality of detail design, Adaptive cruise, Strong Regen Single Pedal model driving, Wireless Apple CarPlay, Pre-climate setting via App (yes mine connects, fellow Honda e owners !!) or key, near Fiesta levels of driving fun, the turning circle (special mention), instant (OMG it's gone) acceleration when ever you want it (much better than my new Kangoo ZE), tech, and not forgetting the looks, inside and out. It turns more heads than my old Focus RS (miss the five pot noise). Lastly, the size is perfect around town.
    Downsides, Small boot but it's not held me back yet. Awkward locking via door handle, it's too new and shiney to pick my daughter up from Explorer scouts with muddy boots, er.... that's about it now I've bought and fitted folding armrest (not having one was a small third world issue). Range isn't an issue for my usage.

    • @SusieSmart
      @SusieSmart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Battery longevity is probably the last thing you need to worry about. A recent video by Go Green Auto’s showed a Hyundai Ioniq with 80,300 miles on it and the battery is still reporting 100% state of health.
      The Honda’s batteries use active thermal management to extend their life. I know the batteries on the BMW i3 (thanks to excellent thermal management) don’t reach 80% of their original capacity until after 4,600 full cycles. Assuming the Honda’s batteries will last the same number of cycles then it’ll still have 80% of its original capacity after around 460,000 to 506,000 miles based on the average real world range of 100 to 110 miles.
      The current highest mileage Honda for sale on Auto Trader is a 2008 Honda Accord and that “only” has 256,000 miles on it so as you can see, considering the battery in the E should last twice as long, the battery is gonna be the least of your worries.

    • @Markcain268
      @Markcain268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SusieSmart depends how the previous owners have treated it, if they have fast charged it most of the time the battery may well be on its last legs, I'd feel much more confident buying a petrol or diesel car as I know what to check on those, and I know the fuel tank won't be worn out either

    • @SusieSmart
      @SusieSmart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Markcain268 back in 2018 Drive Green (an EV specialist) bought a 3 year old 30 kWh Nissan LEAF (the worst of all EV’s for “frying” their batteries when rapid charging due to a lack of active thermal management) with 120,000 miles on it. The car had been rapid charged 4,224 times and only slow charged 10 times within that time yet it still had 87% of its original capacity. That’s literally the worse case scenario, worst car + worst usage pattern. Thankfully every EV apart from the current Nissan LEAF uses active thermal management.
      If you buy any car with 400,000 to 500,000 miles on it then you’re not gonna expect it to be as perfect as it was new. Of course at that mileage the battery may only hold 80% of the energy it did when new but it still works so if the range at 80% capacity is still sufficient for you then you might bag yourself a bargain.

      Imagine all the poor connections on a 15 year old ev, you get enough of them in proper cars, most common mot failure in modern cars is electrical, blimey be a nightmare, think I'll stick to the bus lol

    • @SusieSmart
      @SusieSmart 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Markcain268 there seem to be plenty of 10 year old Nissan LEAF’s still going strong. To be fair a cable might cost £100 to replace. That’s less than what I save a month by having an electric MINI instead of the equivalent Cooper A automatic 🤷‍♂️

    Yes, 30k is reasonably priced, but when you need another car for outside the city, this becomes more like an enclosed electric bicycle. 40k for a car that does everything starts to seem like a good option.
    I dont know how fast you guys drive on motorways across the pond, but in the states 90mph on the highway isnt uncommon.

    I envision a future, obviously not in our live times, where we don't need many cars because they've rebuilt communities so that I can work from home (more common now), and walk/bike to local services. Groceries, dept store, the nearby doctor/dentist for checkups. A car like this is impossible to own in the US and if you lived in downtown Chicago you're much better off financially not owning a car in the first place.

    35 KW batteries for 100-130 miles. Isn't that very inefficient? You'd have thought it would manage 5 miles plus per KW being so small and relatively light. Seems to be struggling to get much over 3. That appears to put it on a par with the Jag - which is a much bigger, heavier and more powerful car.

    £265 for their 'protection pack', which is mats for the floor and boot, or £670 for their 'premium pack' that has 'elegance floor carpets'?! and side moulding... Oh, and if you want their 17" wheels, these are an additional £1,140, then £65 for wheel lock nuts in chrome or £80 in black!
    Too many manufacturers are using their options pack to bloat the price nowadays...
    Add a few of these option packs and your Honda e Advance is... Gulp!! £37,390!
