I'm persuading my wife to move to Malaysia - in the next couple of years. We're living in Portugal from the UK but have travelled to KL and Penang many times. We are spending February in Malaysia - to see if it could be our new home, your videos move us a long quicker! We always enjoy your videos.

Since I married my Malaysian Chinese wife 41 years ago I have visited her country multiple times from the UK but have never eaten in an enclosed restaurant. I always eat at Malay hawker stalls or the multitude of open Chinese food stalls. 8 to12 ringgit a dish was the average price in 2018. I have not been back since pre covid so with inflation most probably prices are higher now. I'll soon find out as I am now applying for the spouse visa so hopefully will be back in January for the longer term.

    • @darksoul1987go

Prices have not changed much. In fact, if you are flexible with your eating habits one could argue that prices are cheaper now. For example, instead of sitting at a mamak restaurant I simply cook rice at home and then walk to the mamak and order a full bag of chicken varuval to go. 10 ringgit. The food will last me for lunch and dinner and probably lunch tomorrow as well if I just boil some veggies along with it as a side dish. Just the other day I was coming home from the dentist and spied through a Dominos and was shocked to see they are still selling pizzas for the same price as 2018. 32 ringgit for two pizzas and garlic bread if you buy instore. Whereas online (which is where I usually order), the price is 36 for the same. I thought they raised the prices everywhere but now I see they only raised it online to perhaps account for a delivery fee because of all the issues with OPEC petroleum supply. If you are willing to drive to them, they will not charge you the extra 3-4 ringgit. I respect that.

I am currently in Bangkok and doing a food trail from a simple noodle shop to a slightly bougie italian pasta place and their prices range from KL kopitiam prices to Bangsar APW level.
My most expensive dessert at Icon Siam was a Thai Bingso for a heart-stopping almost MYR$ 60 for 1 flavour. Three of us decided to share this one order since this Thai ice cafe has a Michelin star. Moreover it was a birthday treat for one of us.
On most time we also hit the local street food. Our best deal was the famous Hong Kong Dim Sum which we were deliciously happy with the bill.
As a whole Bangkok food prices is comparable to Kuala Lumpur when eating at slightly bougie cafes or restaurant. Not to be confused with places away from the city hub. Even to do a decent manicure is no cheaper than KL as my travel mate found out. In her words she can find better deals back home and in Bangkok they priced their nail services and break it down to nitty gritty so you end up paying higher. This is just from a small spa along the local backlane not even at any fancier hotel spa.
Proud to say without prejudice Malaysia has a slight edge over Bangkok daily living.
FYI - Prices at Boots or Watson is similar too for hygiene needs.
7- Eleven is the go to for local conveniences at a lower prices.
It is popular among the locals especially students and office workers to hit the uncountable corner stores for quick snacks or drinks. Our observations are from 2 Malaysians and our Spanish friend who works in Bangkok.
Overall our Spanish friend still favours the diversity of Malaysia despite working all over South East Asia. Of course it is his opinion without any prejudice.
Thanks Taylor for this interesting video. Cheers.

Upscale restaurants i would consider Zenzero (italian)Dominic (french) or Fuego(Latin American) these are the places where i used to go in KL.
      For 2 people easily 400 or 500RM.
In KLCC there are many restaurants in this price range.
So the restaurants mentioned by Andrew in this video are good options for westerners who dosent want to spend a fortune while in KL👍

Someone said your sofa was looking grubby? How rude! Ignore all such comments, Taylor. That person was either having a bad day or asking for some belachan to be thrown at him or her - nobody, not even a guest you've personally invited, has the right to make such a comment about your home, or even worse, the beautiful Mr. Earl Grey:)

Hi Taylor hope all is well with you. When my wife and I are spending our annual 3 months in Malaysia we're always looking for senior priced buffets lol. One of our favorites is at the 1 World Hotel Cinnamon Cafe near 1 Utama shopping center. Lots of variety and as of this summer it was 64 RM per senior. Another is the Mitazu Japanese restaurant off Old Klang road. This will require a reservation as it's very popular for lunch with a large variety of Japanese items also around 60RM per senior. If you like all you can eat Dim Sum then Tung Yuen Chinese restaurant is very reasonable @ 49RM for seniors. Maybe we can get together next time we're in Malaysia. Take care and keep enjoying your time there we always do when we're there and over the last 25+ years have many friends we enjoy spending time with.

Thanks for the info. KL is one of the very few cities where it might be cheaper to eat out 12-18 times a week compared to home cooking - imagine the savings in time and gain in convenience!. The low labour cost and cheaper cost of produce make that possible. The reason is that the government is subsidising the cost of living across the country. Hoping this is sustainable for the long term. KL is a fantastic dream vacation destination. One small shortcoming of Malaysian cuisine is that there are fewer beef dishes available in restaurants. It is probably because it is much more expensive than chicken, pork, and mutton. But Malaysian seafood is very affordable. Wow!
The cost affordability is true for tourists and expats with the Western budget, but less so for locals with local budgets.

Taylor - Grubby sofa? I've always thought your apartment was rather nicely stylish. I would hope they were just kidding. But another good video for food. Do you eat at the hawker or street vendors? I understand it could be hit or miss but it's what makes the cuisine in Malaysia and SE Asia legendary. Another solid video!

Taylor, I got 6 correct. The prices in answer choices only differ by 50 cents.
I notice you aren't eating much Malay foods. 🤣

😂 the prices is just way to high for locals to eat daily. we just cooked ourselves or eat at the cheap street food.

You are funny. I have never seen anybody who put a video with all the multiple choices for every dish. It sounds like my university entrance examination back in 1980' back in Taiwan.
Mid January,2025. Me and my british friend will be visiting KL or Malaysia for the first time in our life. Winter get away.
We will be staying for about 1 month.
It looks like there are plenty choices of food as i see it.
My favourite is dim sum though. Are they cheap or expensive???
