  • A man speared, and successfully landed a free-swimming yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor on Sunday, June 14th. Video submitted by Derek Marso of Valley Farm Market, whose sister shot the video after returning from Catalina Island on the ferry. More at sdfish.com/news...
Disclaimer: Shooting a finfish without being in the water and swimming is illegal. We do not condone illegal activity. This was posted not to celebrate the catch, but to show the unusual event of a yellowfin tuna in the Dana Point Harbor.

This is not sport fishin, this is plain savagery. There is a reason it is called sport fishin, you buy a ticket for it and use a FISHING ROD so the fish has some chance to escape and you excersize in the process havign fun. This is not industrial fishing where the permits are completly different and the purpouse is to feed entire population of humans. Imagine to be THAT dmb not to know the exact differense between types of fishin and their purpouces...

Spearfishing is a way many people live. I live on Maui, Hawaii and over here a main source of food for lower and medium class people comes from spearfishing. You aren't technically suppose to shoot from shore because it's really hard to tell where something is when you're looking from the top of the water but there is nothing against it. It is just hard to do that's why no one does it.

its also because its not legal to hunt with a spear gun and if you accidentally shot it in the air, the spear can fly like 200 feet and kill someone. there is no law saying you have to fire it under water, manufactures do that for liablity and legal purposes.

I once was tied to a breakwater dock, and thought i saw the dorsal fin of a shark!
Upon closer inspection, it was the nose of a skate. I jumped aboard and grabbed a gaff hook.. with a short wait, it came within reach, and i let 'im have it.
It was then I discovered that skates and rays have the aquatic equivilent to All Wheel Drive. He stuck it in reverse, and the dock i was standing on started to torque! Standing on 1 dock cleat and holding to the other sides dock cleat with my free hand, i finaly wrenched it from the water.
Proud of my teenage self, i measured it (6 1/2 feet tip of the nose to tail tip, 6 feet even accross the wings) andstarted to walk it down the dock to show my fishing buddies....
    It never made it there...
Some Koreans saw me comming, and I heard the universal "Nice Catch" sound..." WaAAAHh!! "
Then started the money.. 20 and digging...60... more digging, and A 50 too!??!
    . SOLD!!

majority of comments are of people saying something along the lines of "stop crying over a fish" usually followed by an insult. the first 7 sequential comments i saw were like this. what this tells me is instead of people seeing the comments themselves they commented in response to seeing the magnitude of comments about how bad fishing is, not because they actually saw the people complaining about it. you all are sheep, just parroting what ever the masses say... disgusting

For anyone who is upset about fish being caught and eaten didnt jesus himself help his apostles catch fish to eat im the abundance? Im not religious but if jesus did it and you belive he is the son of god than fishing cant be that bad. Lol

You hold your breath, go down 50, 60, 80 or 100 feet. Settle in without scaring the fish, wait for a shot, then fight the fish and bring him to the top. This aint sitting next to log for hours waiting for deer to be a few hundred feet away. These guys respect the ocean more than most even see the ocean.

Worry about the commercial boats wrapping tons of tuna. Talk crap to the lady at the store buying Tuna Cat Food. Cats are not even designed to eat seafood.
1 rare harbor tuna gets speared. Fricken thousands of Seals in So Cal eating 10lbs of fish per day is a major problem.

FYI to everybody. This was a small albacore. They are basically a low grade tuna. When you buy chicken of the sea or bumblebee tuna cans, you are buying the flesh of this species that has been terribly overcooked, That is why it tastes like cat food and is dry.
