Caffeine is life! Leveraged responsively of course 😅 And good on you for calling out the dehydration myth. I don't know why this one is still around...
You push the red button all the time and the magic juice is gonna stop working. Serious. It will, I guess, boost your metabolism and help burn fat, but you watch those metabolic changes or you'll lose muscle mass to that fast metabolism and then what happens is that you're stuck with the side effects AND losing fitness, if you do not eat enough to compensate. The smell of ammonia does not come from burning fat, it comes from burning protein---which WILL lead to loss of muscle and fitness if left unchecked. Burn a thousand extra calories in a workout and then STILL have an elevated metabolic rate for another half a day----you have to eat a four thousand calorie diet (4000kcal) just to maintain your body structure if you weigh less than 9 or 10 stone. Burning the candle at both ends will eventually lead to osteoporosis.

I gave up caffeine a few months ago, I feel much more energetic throughout the day, sleep better and runnings going well, won't be going back personally 😀👍
Caffeine makes me anxious even in very small amounts. However, I've found that having a coffee before a run is fine. It's like that nervous energy doesn't have time to develop as it's being used to run. My best runs have been after a cup of black coffee and a protein shake.
you might like matcha! it gives me all the energy and focus that coffee does but far less of that jittery, hyped, anxious feeling. great for me when i need to study:)
Caffeine does the same to me; running/exercise helps with serotonin regulation which is crucial in warding off anxiety and depression. You might even find that having a coffee after your run, rather than before, is also fine. But don't have any more than that in a day, especially in the afternoon/evening as that'll affect sleep (at least that's the case for me), and good sleep is another crucial mechanism to regulate serotonin levels.
Coffee seems to raise my resting HR by 3-4bpm and it takes about a week for the resting HR to go back down. I discovered this when I quit Coffee for a month. A week after quitting the resting HR goes down. I've repeated the experiment a few times with consistent results.
Yes to the caffeine definitely. And hey Rick I had my left knee totally replaced in 2016 I'm still running I'm 67 years old now. You definitely can come back from knee injuries. Love the show you guys keep up the good work.
A yawn is a silent scream for coffee. Coffee is love coffee is life. Coffee mantras aside, I definitely perform physical activities far more efficiently after a good strong coffee!! Definitely keeps me feeling "locked in and feeling it" to the music on the weekly long run!!! This is a great video!
I've watched a lot of caffeine running videos. This is by far the best/ most informative I've seen. If only I could sacrifice the five coffees a day coming up to race day 😂
Also remember that caffeine and vitamin/mineral absorption are not good friends so try to leave an hour or so between your coffee and your vitamin/mineral-rich meals or supplements 😊 all the best and thank you for the great video as always 😍
Good morning running channel team, thanks for your amazing videos. I lately added to my breakfast before running a marathon, a cup of coffee, and since I got better results.

I drink coffee as an occasional treat, but, have been trying a large beetroot juice with a double Espresso chaser for my last few long runs and I have to say, they have all been very enjoyable. I'm no record breaker, but I am definitely running them better than in previous sessions.

I once consumed an SIS caffeine gel at mile 19 in a marathon, that was an intense hit! Which gave the desired effect instantly. Maybe I will try that again for my next marathon as it helped. Also,Rick standing, unaided? Tres bien!!!

What an incredibly insightful video! I love caffeine especially delivered through coffee. It would sure be nice if there were pods that had my specified dose of caffeine before training and performance days.
I tend to have a coffee before a run, but that's because I have coffee with breakfast and generally run after breakfast and before work/the rest of the day. On long runs I will have a caffeine gel, and on really long runs I'll have a revvies strip with me too.
Maybe I would have coffee before 1mile or 5K race but certainly not before Marathon or 50K as early increased heart rate leads to ultimate collapse after legendary 20miles but starting to have caffeine drinks at late stage (after 18mile) of long race feels beneficial as heart rate already has increased and won't go down before finish line. All personal and individual opinions but safe to try at home ☺️
Coffee helps me get started on the days I don’t run first thing. And if I do, enjoy the post run cup as well. If I’m trying to go fast or far, I’ve tried both the gels and gum. They work well, but I’ve found when doing both types together I need to watch the “feel goods” ahead of a run or else I go out too fast.
Caffeine gum is preferred by the military for several reasons, including quicker absorption (via buccal mucosa). Caffeine mouth rinses are similarly fast-acting. Caffeine nasal sprays may stimulate additional nerves.
I definitely get a power boost from caffeine, but I have to be careful not to drink too much. Fueling food wise is key for me to balance my caffeine consumption and the happiness of my stomach. (I easily fall victim to nausea from over-caffeination.) I've also found that my body needs more like eight (or more hours depending on the caffeine's source) to metabolize the caffeine enough to not spend half the night tossing and turning. Caffeine and I are frenemies.
At 2:05 Kate tells us caffeine can burn fat as fuel, thus conserving glycogen stores. I was under the impression that burning fat is far less efficient than glycogen, hence why when we get to around 20 miles in a marathon we can hit the wall because we've run down our bodies store of glycogen. My personal experience shows that if a heavy coffee drinker abstains from caffeine for a month prior to competition they will get a noticeable boost. I haven't personally experienced this in an endurance event such as a marathon. Perhaps caffeine would cause the body to run on part fat, part glycogen during the race. If this is the case then theoretically you'd have some glycogen left in reserve for that last 6 miles of the marathon. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I should swiftly add that Maurten gels and drinks are amazing and I use them in all my training and racing. I’ve never once had any issues at all. It’s just caffeine my body can’t handle.
Hey Daniel! We actually gave a little training diary update on social media today which you can watch here: instagram.com/p/COZtKZorsy7/? The next video instalment will be out in early June 😊
I used to always have espresso before a run, my machine don't work anymore so obviously don't have one, I've not noticed a difference to be honest, so i won't start again when i get my new machine
When you say, “3 cups of coffee” do you mean 3 multiplied by 8 ounces, or 3 multiplied by a 12 ounce coffee mug? My mugs hold 12-14 ounces of coffee, but a cup as a measure is 8 ounces.

I completely quit coffee for about 2 years because my consumption had gotten ridiculous. The first coffee after that break had me sweating buckets with a splitting headache 😅
@@runningchannel It was worth a go!
I should swiftly add that Maurten gels and drinks are amazing and I use them in all my training and racing. I’ve never once had any issues at all. It’s just caffeine my body can’t handle.
Not had the Caffine Maurten but the normal ones are the only Gels I can use that don’t give me GI issues.
Hey it would be so great if the running channel could interview david Goggins!!
Thanks for the suggestion 😊
Always after never before

He's recovering well, thanks for asking! We'll have a new video update soon 😊
Any chance we can get an update on Anna’s Boston challenge!?
Hey Daniel! We actually gave a little training diary update on social media today which you can watch here: instagram.com/p/COZtKZorsy7/?
The next video instalment will be out in early June 😊
Yup coffee before every morning run but not on my Friday before dinner run
I used to always have espresso before a run, my machine don't work anymore so obviously don't have one, I've not noticed a difference to be honest, so i won't start again when i get my new machine
My runs get so much more relaxed without caffeine. Lower heart rate more control
When you say, “3 cups of coffee” do you mean 3 multiplied by 8 ounces, or 3 multiplied by a 12 ounce coffee mug? My mugs hold 12-14 ounces of coffee, but a cup as a measure is 8 ounces.
My routine is ;- ESPRESSO dress, 6 min warmup, 5/10/15 km. home ESPRESSO 10 min warm down. Loo!
Sounds great!
No caffeine before a run or in the evenings. Also tea contains caffeine. But good info.
Thanks for watching 😊
8oz Red Bull before a run 🏃♂️👌
