Hi Dimiri, Thanks for your videos. I have a 2021 MG ZST Essence 1.3L with 11,000km on the clock. (I'm in Australia) I purchased just a few months ago with 6,000kms on the clock at the time. I use the car daily. So, I've definitely experienced some electronic glitches with the vehicle. I'll just start by saying that Mechanically, the cars engine runs absolutely fine, gears shift smoothly, engine sounds and feels consistently fine. Electronically, there are some issues. I'll start with the minor ones. 1) Android Auto drops out randomly - not every time I use it, but every now & then. 2) Side mirrors - glitch with passenger mirror causing it to not fold in when locking car. I fixed this once using the method of getting in car, turning on accessories, using the manual mirror control button and pushing it down to manually fold in mirrors and then down again to manually unfold the mirrors. Hopped out of car and pressed lock on remote fob. Both mirrors folded in. Since then, the passengers mirror has stopped folding in again and I cannot rectify the issue again. Now for my MAJOR ISSUE - over the last 2 weeks, the car will not reliably start, SOMETIMES IT WILL/ SOMETIMES IT WON'T. On one occasion I was driving, had slowed to a stop at a give way sign and the car turned itself off. I could not restart after about 20 attempts and then for no apparent reason, it randomly started again. ***IT'S NOT FUN 🤣 *** We have used a method of elimination to drill down what we believe to be the issue. 1) We Changed the remote fob battery. 2) we placed the remote fob in the cup holder with the buttons facing up to attempt to start the vehicle. 3) We fully charged the battery of the car. I will attempt to describe what happens. 1) Get in car, put fob in cup holder, check car in PARK, put foot on brake - press start button. 2) Dash lights up, all instruments appear and infotainment system comes on. 3) Dash instruments cycle through notifications such as - 'pedestrian emergency braking not available' & 'Emergency Braking not available' 4) Once instrument notifications finish cycling - the dash instrument panel is on and static 5) with foot still on brake, push START button again to try to get engine to start - ENGINE DOES NOT START. 6) took foot off brake, pushed START button again and turned off all instrumentation. got out of car and locked with fob. A little later, got in the car and after going through these same above steps (except for no. 6) , the vehicle then started itself while my foot was on the brake pedal but it was after a 30 second delay since pressing the START BUTTON. Extremely bizzare. After much invesigation and variations to attempted starting methods & combinations, here is what we have narrowed down. When the above Steps 1 - 5 have occured in prior attempts, at no point has the 'amber coloured engine light' appeared on the dash. The car has not started. When we repeated Steps 1-5 again and the car still wouldn't start, with foot on brake, we then moved the gear shifter to 'N' Neutral. There was a very faint noise (seeming from the rear of the vehicle) what we believe to be the fuel pump engaging and immediately the 'amber - engine ready light' appeared on the dash. The car then started without issue. We tried the entire scenario again - after 30 mins. We did everything exactly the same - EXCEPT this time - putting the car into 'N' Neutral didn't trigger the fuel pump to engage or the engine light to come on. We still could not start the car. SO THEN I JIGGLED THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER - SIDE TO SIDE - WHILST STILL IN NEUTRAL and immediately the fuel pump engaged and the engine light came on. CAR STARTED WITHOUT ISSUE. This is very concerning. Not knowing if I can start my car at any given time is a real worry. And having my car turn itself off whilst in traffic is also a serious issue. Sorry to detail all of that, but thought it may be helpful to anyone else out there who is experiencing the same symptoms. WE BELIEVE THAT IT IS THE 'TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH' THAT IS FAULTY. From what we can research, the TRS communicates to the PCM to acknowledge what gear the car is in. Which in turn decides if it will allow the car to start or not. We are now at the stage where we need to determine if its just a loose wire or if the whole switch is faulty or on it's way out. I hope this helps someone else. Thanks.
Nice and detailed write-up Kate, thank you, and sorry you're having these issues - but I guess it's electronics, right? Could happen with a Range Rover for all we know... Why are you trying so hard to diagnose it yourself though? The car is on 7 year warranty, you bought it pretty much new with 6k on the clock! Just take it back to MG service and let them diagnose and sort it out for you! This sounds way way too complex for anyone to try and diagnose on their own, and it's not why we pay them - indirectly - by buying a car that's supposed to come with a proper warranty and support.
The description of the fault sounds very much like a faulty inhibitor switch linked to the automatic transmission selector lever. Modern cars have a switch on the transmission that is designed to prevent a car starting unless the transmission is out of gear in either N (Neutral) or P (Park). An intermittent issue with the switch can often be overcome by moving the transmission lever up and down a couple of times. Have you had the issue inspected and fixed by MG?
If a USB port and a funny noise from a mirror (which could have been caused by damage by the sounds of it) are the only problems in 17000km, then that is not too bad at all. Very impressive car
Using my MG SZT for a year, and I'm completely in love with my car. But I also take good care of it, especially the interior since it's white. The only issue I've had during the year of using it is that my android phone doesn't always connect to the car. But I usually connect my phone to the car before I start driving, so I just unplug it from the phone side and plug it back in, and it works. So I think the issue is with the cable or my phone. A few times the screen has frozen while I was driving, but I stopped the car and restarted it, which helped. What I don't like about the car is that there is no round button for sound control, which is not a big deal, but it's faster than the buttons because the response of the buttons is not very quick. It feels like using an old model phone: I need to slow down a bit to get a response. FYI: I have already ridden more than 20 thousand km on it.
@@katerina-959 Appreciate that feedback. I've had my ZST for a little over 2 weeks, and it's been fantastic (of course). Have the SmartWorld CP-AA adapter coming which I can't wait to take for a spin.
Hi, I watched your video. I like the way you explain. I want to buy MG ZST Vibe. But I’m afraid about would it last long, about it’s reliability. It would be my first car. Can you please suggest me If I should buy this car or not ?
Hi Dimitri. Great reviews on your ZST. We are planning to purchase a new MG ZST Core this week but I think we should get the Vibe. What are your thoughts? Especially if the Android Auto is problematic then the GPS back is only in the Vibe. Plus, how are the PU seats holding up in your ZST, as the Core only has cloth seats?
Hey I'm not sure about the differences between lower models as we knew we wanted the top of the range straight away, so went for Essence. Generally, any Android Auto problems seem to be related to the cable. And the built-in GPS/Sat Nav is very slow and barely usable, honestly - I wouldn't bother with it anyway... So for GPS I'd just go with generic Android Auto support and you'll be fine. For the other features such as seats etc, you'll need to confirm on the website and/or with your dealer what's included in Vibe vs. Core mate.
The noise of mirror folder is ery similar on most cars.. BTW what is the noise level when the air con fan is on high or close to that. Tesla was unbearable.. not sure now whether fixed or not And another.. I don't want a sunroof if I buy the top model. I just don't .. too hot in Australia too. Can they delete it and credit me.
I got my ZST just over 3 weeks ago. The cable was an issue from the start, tested 2 different ones, the second worked better than the first, but it was still losing connection. I get in and out if the car all day long as I drive to multiple sites. Plugging in and unplugging the phone was time consuming and annoying. I got a dongle instead and it has worked faultlessly. I never have to plug the cable in and the phones connects to Apple CarPlay automatically as I get in the car, even if it’s in my pocket or handbag. Problem solved. 😊
What sort of dongle was it? Bluetooth? Im interested in the auto connection to the car. My old ford would bluetooth to the phone and I could just say "call the wife". Now with the Kia the phone needs to be plugged in via cable or the voice function does not work.
Hello, I bought MGZS 2023. I’ve had it 11 months and driven 25,000 klms. The only things I can see that have dropped off so far is the economy is not as good as when it was less than 10,000 klms new. I have also noticed the common clicking in the steering wheel column that has been commented on on reviews.
Clicking is something that we still (luckily) don't have. Fuel economy... Haven't noticed much change, it's kinda been more or less the same all way through.
Thanks for this review as we are considering a new MG ZS 2024 manual transmission. As far as wired Apple or Android connections: I believe that for less than A$50 you can purchase a wireless adapter - you could keep the adapter in the car and when you start the car, Apple CarPlay or Android will connect wirelessly. (If any viewers have installed such an adapter, be great to hear your comments). // As to the side view mirrors folding - sounds just like my Volvo S60 which is 14 years old- same sound for 14 years - same as this - I think it’s just the sound it makes! What I can say is that if these are the only negatives after 3 years and 16,000 km - NOT BAD! It seems the seats, motor, electrical system, brakes, handling, rust, sensors and more are all doing GR8! If not be good to hear about any mechanical or even other features that are positive (or negative) after 16,000 km. Thanks again!!!!!
I don't know why anyone would buy a manual transmission in 2024, if anything is worth a few extra bucks these days - it's that, imho anyway... Yes mate, catch up on the other videos and check the descriptions, I've been partnering with wireless head unit and adapter manufacturers for months...
Hi, does anyone know if MG updated the ZST between 2021/22 and 2024? Just wanting to know if there are any differences. We've been looking at the 2024 model here in NZ, and also think maybe a second hand one that's 2-3 years old will be fine too. Thanks
I'm considering buying this, I'm 186cm tall and a bit bulky, will it suit me? Here in Saudi Arabia we have 200,000 km or 6 Years warranty for all MG vehicles.
Hello my friend, warranty sounds pretty good but I think you'll definitely feel very squished in a ZST. Consider something with more headroom and general space, such as Haval H6 (if you have GWM brand there) or maybe even Maxus D90?
@@ValueCarsAU haval h6 is quite expensive here and also comes with only 120k warranty. A Toyota Fortuner mid option is in that price point. What about the HS?
@@yaseenmohammedabdulhameedk4440 wow I didn't expect H6 to compare with Fortuner on pricing, this is quite unusual... HS is definitely larger and in any case you should go sit in the cars you're considering and take them for a drive.
As I said in the later and more recent videos, don't negotiate with wires and native infotainment and just get yourself a wireless adapter - problem solved once and for all.
I bought my new MG HS Hybrid only done 350 miles in 3 months in my garage while weather's bad but love driving it, any chance you have updates on the HS Hybrid.
Glad to hear you're enjoying your MG mate, unfortunately not much chance of a HS Hybrid update from me as I don't drive it, and see no particular point in going back to the dealership to ask for another test drive... (new MG models though - different story!)
Still drives the same as far as we can tell, and no change to fuel consumption. It's not the most fuel efficient car, but roughly what I'd expect in city stop-and-go traffic
@MGOwnersAU and more thing I am planning to buy zst essence and considering Hyundai venue and Kia stonic too both of which are around 32 k top of the range but still leaning more towards zst, any thoughts there?
Hello, I'm from Saudi Arabia and I accidentally watched a video of yours, I like how you describe your experience in details so I watched 4-5 videos about your zst which is the car I'm interested in. I didn't see you talking about the fuel consumption in any of your videos and maybe compare it to your other car consumption, also didn't see you talking about taking a long trip using zst (e.g 400KM) and if there are 4-5 people in the car would that make a difference? If these points are of any interest to you then please share your opinion, thanks for all your videos.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting - ZST is my wife's car, we drive it around the city (a lot) but I personally always use the "main" car - whichever one I'm using at a time - for longer drives e.g. on holidays. This is why we're almost never having a 4 people in the car type of situation. But from what I've experienced so far, ZST is solid enough not to cause you any particular issues, BUT is it the best vehicle to regularly transport 4-5 people? I doubt that, purely from the interior space perspective. It's not small, but it's large or comfortable for 5 people in it... If I were you (with your requirements), I'd be looking broader than just MG ZST - at Haval H6 or maybe even something like MG Gloster/LDV D90/Maxus D90 if you'd like even more space and a 2L engine.
@@ValueCarsAU Thank you for your reply, it is actually not a requirement to be used regularly, I'm curious to know because having 4-5 people happens once per month or even 2 months for a long trip, but it is good to know the limit of the car before buying.
Hi mate, thanks for the video, looking to buy one in next few weeks, regarding the car play same as my subaru and toyota, i have asked both of dealers and been advised better to use original cable but seems still drops sometime, very annoying.
Thanks for sharing mate, and one advice I'd give you is to definitely compare ZST to Haval Jolion and now Chery Omoda 5 before buying. Simply to have all options within the same range before you commit to buy this. A comparison video is coming soon.
I have a Honda Civic and after 3 years the CarPlay played out like what you described. I am currently using a wifi dongle which is a about $30 and turns wired to wireless CarPlay.
I love your updates as I also have an MG zst Essence which I got in December. The wing mirrors on my car have always sounded like that, well maybe not quite that bad but it was the first thing I noticed that sounded "off". The main annoying problem I have is with the headlights, and I've read this is a common problem, they always come on when I start the car. So yes it's simple, just turn them off, but then I got a dash cam professionally fitted and it switches to park mode (only records if it detects something) if you turn the headlights off. I think I got it sussed, but not quite sure, I think if you switch them off and on again and not leave them on Auto the cam then changes to drive. But anyway that's not a car problem, it's the camera, I think. Love your videos about this car, they give me a heads up on what to expect, or not. 👍
All your videos are awesome, specially this one 😊 The way you describe the issues on the side mirror is just too notch 👍 Looking to buy the Excite in orange in a few weeks time
Hi mate are these MG cars made in China? I had a look at one before I bought my RAV4 but it felt very cheap compared to others that I inspected and test drove. Seems pretty piss poor that the motor in the mirror is going after only a couple of years
Well, it's not "going" yet probably, I'm just fussing over it! :) I'm not sure if it's made in China or Thailand specifically for AU, but overall build is quite solid. It's the electronics that I mainly always had the issue with, not the build quality.
a car should still be working with little wrong with it even after 60,000miles. that's how i run my cars and nothing less than that or the return is pathetic.

1) We Changed the remote fob battery.

3) We fully charged the battery of the car.
I will attempt to describe what happens.
1) Get in car, put fob in cup holder, check car in PARK, put foot on brake - press start button.
2) Dash lights up, all instruments appear and infotainment system comes on.
3) Dash instruments cycle through notifications such as - 'pedestrian emergency braking not available' & 'Emergency Braking not available'

Gee you need to clean the brake dust off of the front wheels. My Kia mirrors make a clicking sound that I don't like. I turned off the auto folding.
Yep, I do need to do something about those wheels but you know how there's always something better to do with the time? 🤷♂️🤣
Thanks for the awesome review , just checking is it still drive the same , any issues with the driving and is it good on fuel consumption?
Still drives the same as far as we can tell, and no change to fuel consumption. It's not the most fuel efficient car, but roughly what I'd expect in city stop-and-go traffic
@MGOwnersAU thanks heaps for your reply, love your videos and honest opinion cheers
@MGOwnersAU and more thing I am planning to buy zst essence and considering Hyundai venue and Kia stonic too both of which are around 32 k top of the range but still leaning more towards zst, any thoughts there?
@@akhilchadha5030 get the seltos. It's better than all of them
I had the same problem with connectivity, so i can say 98% u need a new cable, better off getting the Apple product to not spend twice on cables
Agreed - will try, and thank you.
Yep wifi dongles are the way we went with both cars
Get some compressed air and just clean it out , it just break dust in there.
Probably. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your experience and your positive comment, really appreciate it! :)
All your videos are awesome, specially this one 😊
The way you describe the issues on the side mirror is just too notch 👍
Looking to buy the Excite in orange in a few weeks time
Thank you! And hope you love your new Excite when it arrives!
Definitely built in China. Saw a row of new ones at a dealer with country of origin stickers on the windows. All said China
@@ytc51 just like your iPhone then? 🤷👍
Thailand
@@ytc51 ones in Australia are all from Thailand.
I think the electric motor needs lubrication, brother.
And how many normal users would "lubricate" their electric motors, realistically?
a car should still be working with little wrong with it even after 60,000miles. that's how i run my cars and nothing less than that or the return is pathetic.
I agree
you get what you pay for
How infinitely wise
