    I will explain Electron Affinity in simple terms - i guarantee it is easy to understand
    First understand Ionisation energy - it is the energy required to make an atom lose it's electron
    So u need to kick out an electron from it's orbit - it won't happen on it's own - go give some energy to it.
    The energy u gave or the energy required for removal of an electron is called ionisation energy. - EASY, nothing complicated
    Now electron affinity is the straight opposite - yes it is the opp. Screw what google or Chat GPT is saying
    U gave an energy to remove electron. So for the opposite case:
    U will get an energy to add an electron. That is, the atom loses some of it's energy to attract electron nd hold it in it's place. Just the opposite.
    The more the ionisation energy is required to remove an electron (like in the case of noble gases), the less they r going to easily lose an electron
    For Electron affinity it is the opposite, the greater the energy is released or the more electron affinity it has, the faster it is going to attract electrons or greater the no. of electrons attracted.
    That's it - Electron affinity explained in simple terms.
    Now i am not sure it is completely correct in terms of advanced level of science. But for general understanding it is great way to visualise nd is correct.

      mariam bassam because a free electron is more energetic as compared to valence shell electrons. So in order to become a part of the valence shell, the electron must lose energy to become a part of that shell.

    I'm sorry, I'm just wondering, wasn't Zeff supposed to be # of protons - # of core electrons? In other words, should've it been 10 - 2 (because of electrical configuation, 2, 8, 18, 32)? Also, how did you find the "shileding" electron?

      See here's how it is ...
      You have a neon atom with 10 electron you try to add one electron well protons will attract the electron towards it but all the other elctrons tend to repel it as they have like charges so. Here core elctrons means all the elctrons of an atom not only of first orbit. But all the orbits..

    i have one doubt .....so when we add an electron to lithium which has the configuration 1s^2 2s^1 its configuration changes to Li^-1 so Li^-1 configuration looks like beryllium ...so ...when
    I find an atom in nature while im in a kind of a research(just a thought) ...with the configuration of 1s^2 2s^2........ is it beryllium or Li^-1 ????????? pls help !!!!!!!!!

      These elements can not be found simply as li and beryllium in nature ,it must be in form of oxides or sulphides or other forms so it may vary according to the state of combination it is present

    Does lithium (EA = -60) every really form an anion? I am accustomed to the idea of a lithium cation, but not anion.

    I thought energy was released when you lose an electron so now energy is released again when you gain an electron? If the energy is given off then the atom would lose that energy and be neutral again right? so are electrons just energy and not matter?

    If nitrogen doesn't have an affinity for an electron then why doesn't a carbon atom also have its electron affinity as zero. Doesn't carbon also have 4 half filled orbitals?

      Cause a free electron has a more energy or it is at higher state than all the other elctrons of atom so for the electron to be added some eenrgy has to be given out so that it is stable

    I am more confused now... so Li requires energy to become 1+? I thought the reaction of Li is exothermic not endothermic

      Well from my understanding, as there is a high amount of attraction between the outer most electron and the nucleus (due to small atomic radius and little electron shielding), a lot of energy would be required to rip that electron away. Or another way of looking at it would be to say that a lot of energy would be needed to break the electrostatic bond between the two. This is for the ionisation of Lithium.
