- For you guys who have a 1st Gen Cummins - Part 4&5 - If your computer died and you've lost your ability to stay cool here is an easy way to get things up and running. Also, I go over how to wire in a rocker switch for your pre-heat solenoid relays.
DISCLAIMER!! This particular 'fix' worked on MY truck and is merely a guide to help you. It may not work on your truck. ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK. Your 1st Gen Cummins truck's wiring MIGHT be different OR you may have OTHER MODIFICATIONS.

I'm not a fan of chopping up a harness. Makes more sense to me to dig around in the schematics to learn where things are going and make the connection at an established junction point. Had a number of DMs asking to do a video on the rockers - we will. Have a great weekend Joel! 👍

My 93 has been sick in all of the ways yours was. I just changed my speed sensor to no avail. The overdrive works but no speedo, AC is a similar situation. Only works when it wants to, gonna try this hardwire hack. Thank you so much. At my own risk of course.
Hi, First check the grounds at the PCM.. if all good check what voltage you are getting at the speed sensor as well as the speedo. Could be a loose wire issue. For the A/C - disconnect the computer(in case that isn't the problem) set the AC to MAX and just touch the jumper together momentarily while the truck is running to see if the compressor clutch engages. Some or all elements of the PCM could be dropping out. If it's totally dead you would have lost charging as well. Hope things work out for you.

Wow, That was almost unexpected, like getting your order correct at a drive thru! Lol. Welcome to the world I lived in Nick for 38+ years. Electrical, like an automatic can only go from bad to worst. Best Practices is confirm all complaints, then stare at the schematic until you find a common spot where “If this fails, then you have every problem” Congratulations Nick. Did you feel like handing out cigars?
I have no idea why, but Dodge built cars with the battery in front of the wheelhouse and this 92-94 is when OBD-II was rolled out, thanks to the the California Air Research Board or CARB. Funny, but they get the best ditch weed down there.

Building a car, working the metal and moving it is talent. God only knows you have paid yours dues, like make something to find out it was upside down? I am old enough to use schematics in the back of the service manual that folded out 10 pages. Left was head lights, center was dash and the last page was tail lights.
I have worked on cars I can’t pronounce that air men would bring from other countries. Then, one guy own 3 use car dealers, he brought me the DMC DeLorean to repair. Mustang front and Volvo-Peugeot engine/transaxle. And FIAT X1/9th. There is a car to forget.

You're not a bore Dean! I always love chatting with viewers... learn something new every time. It might take some time but I read and reply to all comments. I learned to read the schematics in my Dad's "Glen's New Auto Repair Manual" from the 60's while most kids my age at the time would read comics. LOL!

One day after I charged the a/c with Freon and turned the truck on, I got a lot of smoke coming from the fusible links area and a strong electrical smell. I lost all my gauges, ignition, a/c, water in fuel light, wait to start light and speedometer. After I fixed the blown fusible link, I got all gauges back except speedometer. Everything else didn’t work. I’m pretty sure the computer burnt up during the incident. But I wired the a/c as shown in your video, and it works again. I’ll be doing the grid heaters next, then the speedometer. Then I should be set. I prob won’t need the water in fuel light. I’ll just drain it here and there regularly.
@@rogermadrange1724 I do the same with the water in fuel. As a matter of fact the wires snapped off the sensor years before the computer went.

What about the charging system to the computer my ecm is going out i think I'm having gauge problems charging problems I think it's through the ECM was wondering how you fix that if it was on yours as well

Would deleting the pcm all together have any impact on the crank shaft position sensor ?
CPS is used to tell the PCM if the engine is running. That way the PCM's internal regulator would control the alternator. If you deep six the PCM your alternator won't charge. You'll need to add an external fire wall mounted regular and follow the steps I show in this video th-cam.com/video/sChQDthPZAA/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps.
I just did this for my truck and it did not work for me, is there something i missed?
AC or Pre-Heat? If for AC check your relay to make sure it's good. You can stick one of the other 2 relays in as they are the same. When ground is applied to the relay it should engage the compressor when you set the HVAC controls to MAX AC, AC or Defrost.
Would it be the same for the ac on a 1990 they had slightly different computer systems than the 91.5-93s
Sorry, I can't tell you for sure. You may need to open the harness around the AC relay and trace wires
Hey when you said the ac used to run through that relay, did you by pass the relay or what did you do about that wiring?
The AC still uses the relay to operate. Blue/Orange comes from the relay and used to go into the computer. The computer would control the relay's ground. As I mentioned in the video, just connect the blue/orange directly to the brown wire. I used a black wire as a reminder to me that the blue/orange is now being grounded. After 10 years one forgets a few things. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@iNVisionPrototypesgreat video but I have another question, that brown wire that goes out into the harness that you connected the blue wire to.. is that just a ground wire since that blue wire is the ground control for the relay? Or does it go to something like the low pressure switch? I found out the hard way by just permanently grounding that blue wire that the compressor does function, but never cycles and freezes the evaporator.. any input would be great!

So when I hook the blue orange to the brown wire, I get nothing. When I ground the blue orange wire compressor won't turn off. Don't know what I'm doing wrong but mines a 92 if anybody knows what's going on
Hi Clint, When you connected the blue orange to brown, did you go in the truck and turn the HVAC controls onto MAX AC or defrost? That should engage the compressor manually.(from what I recall... been a few years... the brown is a ground that the HVAC selection of MAX AC and defrost option creates. Hi Lo pressure control switches will keep the compressor happy. You just have to remember to turn the AC off when you shut down the truck by selecting off, vent, heater. Otherwise you'll be starting the truck with AC engaged... a little harder on the starter. Let me know how that works out.
Yes. I cycled all the cold side ac components, the compressor never comes on hooked up to the brown wire. If I ground the orange and blue straight to the chassis the compressor runs even with the ac off.... I'm lost.
Thinking i might have to run the compressor off a switch would be a pain In the ass...
