  • Amazon Jungle in Cuyabeno, Ecuador.
    March 2013.
This is last two days of a four days tour.
The third day's program was to visit an Aboriginal village, which is deeper in the jungle, more than an hour away by clipper boat from our resort. Soon after the boat set off, I saw several similar resorts around, including the JAMU LODGE I contacted before I left home. Now the Ecuadorian government doesn’t allow new resorts to open, so as to properly protect the local ecology. On the way, the guide spotted another sloth, which was easier to see, and it was rare that the sloth kept moving.
When we arrived at the indigenous village, I felt a little disappointed. The whole village did not have much "original" taste. In fact, after thinking about it, you can understand that although this place is inconvenient, it can be reached in one day by modern means of transportation, so the building materials they use are of course ordinary cheap urban building materials, not necessarily jungle material. If you go deeper into the jungle, such as villages where there are no motor boats at all and can only be reached by canoes, you may see different things, but that kind of place is not open to tourists. Having said that, I would also like to see that the primitive tribes in the Amazon jungle today are actually living well. My curiosity is neither healthy nor important.
It doesn't take much time to turn around in the village, and it's not much different from an ordinary rural village. Afterwards, a woman from the village took us to the side of the road. She used a hoe to cut the branches and leaves of a plant. At the end, there was only a vine as thick as a mop stick, and we were asked to pull it up. There are only two men here, and I am younger, so I am the one to pull it out. Fortunately, this thing is not difficult at all. It looks like a potato when pulled out from the mud, but there are several.
The tour guide and the village woman took us to a large shed and started to cook our lunch. The first step is to wash a few "potatoes", and then use a plane to grind them. All of us can do this step. It looks easy, but is difficult to do. I was one of the first batch to try. This “potato” was slippery in my hand, and it was not easy to hold it. I held such a piece and rubbed it on a plane as large as a washing board, and then rub the “potato” with a little force. Because it is slippery, the fingers could rub against the iron planer. I shivered for two minutes before my fingers touched the plane, and with just a light touch, a piece of skin came off. After that, I had to quit. Even if I didn't care, I would be embarrassed to get blood into everyone's meals.
After this step was done, the woman wrapped the "shredded potato" with something like a straw mat and twisted it repeatedly. It was hard to imagine how much liquid could be squeezed out of it. These "shredded potatoes" have become powdered by this time. In the end, the woman lit the pond fire, set up a large flat iron pot, put the "potato powder" into the iron pot, flattened and pressed it, baked it until it was browned and then turned it over. When the other side was also browned, the big pancake is ready.
The whole baking process was full of aroma, and everyone was looking forward to it while swallowing mouth water. While we were eating, the woman baked another cake, which was also completed by us.
After eating, we walked around the village for a while and then we headed home. When we got back to the resort, there was a late lunch waiting for us. Now I can't eat much with such a good appetite.
I left the lodge on fourth day. From Cuyabeno, first a small boat, then a big boat, and finally a car where there is a road. The river channel for the boat is narrow, and the tour guide still explained to us what we saw along the way. On the way back, we met a large python, which was five or six meters long, climbing on the bushes on the shore.
The big and small boats sailed for more than two hours in total, and a mini bus drove for another two hours before returning to Lago Agrio, my departure place for this Amazon tour a few days ago.
