Twait Shad Fishing with Lures. Landing a Cracking Specimen Shad

- Twaite Shad river fishing in Ireland, St. Mullin's has become my annual fishing tradition. In this video I managed to land my new Personal Best Specimen Twaite Shad of 50cm, and get plenty of action from smaller fish. I will explain my approach, the lures I use and a little trick to give me an edge.
While fishing for them, do make sure to take utmost care, absolutely minimise the time out of the water, unhook and release them quickly, as they are really fragile fish and on their way to spawn. They enter the river only once a year and it becomes a beautiful tradition to do the Barrow River Fishing for Shad. It's a mecca of fishing for shad in Ireland and souls from all over the country come down to the picturesque village of St. Mullins as soon as the first fish start running the river around April / May each year.
Fishing for Twaite Shad is an event in itself. The atmosphere, the people, the views are second to none and once you try this shad fishing you will be coming back there every year :o)

St. Mullins is a lovely stretch on the Barrow surrounded by beautiful scenery. Great fighting fish.
It absolutely is the only one in its kind. And the birds singing there is mind blowing 😳😳

I can't wait until I can get down there to try a get a few myself. It will be very interesting to see in the next couple of seasons to see if the break in guys fishing for them last season will have helped them as a species to recover in stock numbers. 🤞🤞🤞
Thanks Jay, I was told last season it was very good by some being able to fish it. It wasn't super on the day really, 16h fishing squeezed into a few minutes might look that way 😉 in fairness, in my opinion they should be under the full protection, as they are in many European countries.
@@MarcinKantor Yeah I totally agree with you in that respect they're a protected species but that rule doesn't seem to apply to Ireland for some reason. In Europe there are certain rivers they run and the fishing is closed once the shad turn up so they can spawn and recover for the next year.
That should be the case here too

I was once told they died after being caught. I don’t think it’s true especially if there looked after.. great video as always 🐟
Thank you, they're not that bad, but indeed they're the most fragile fish I got to deal with. Unfortunately any increased time out of water and they won't survive, also a deep hooked fish has incredibly slim chances. In fairness they should be fully protected as per EU directives...

Hi Korab, it's actually a fairly cheap military surplus goretex jacket. 30 quid or so of ebay. Think mine was a second hand one. It's actually the only jacket that never leaked on my compared to some €€€ branded stuff
What mainline/leader setup do you use Marcin?
I use about 10/12lbs fluorocarbon and a matching braid

I was talking to lad who did very well on the fly, but he said there were plenty fish in the river. Great fun apparently
