It was Ferdinand Piëch's pet project and he didn't compromise when it came to engineering (Bugatti Veyron being another example). If it had an Audi badge instead of VW, it'd have ran circles around the contemporary (W220?) S-Class.

I said that because plenty of great luxury cars of the era (like the W220) were 90% of the car the Phaeton was and parts are still readily available. They were designed to be more maintenance-friendly to begin with. Also has to do with economies of scale. So few Phaetons were produced. But the A8 was a very close car to the Phaeton. It did outperform the W220 on paper but ended up being a pain in the ass to maintain and have about the same parts prices as Phaetons. The M113 and 722.6 is the most reliable luxury car engine combo after Lexus' V8 cars.
Last thing you need to worry about is people who don't like your 'rants.' You have thousands upon thousands of people who LIVE for this stuff. You're saving a lot of us from pulling our hair out (well I'm bald but you get it) right now. Thank you so much for all you do.

Doctors should recommend bills car sales videos as a general pick me up when people feel abit under the weather. I have watched a number of bills videos and I reckon eight out of ten watched have had a cheering up effect on me. bill is a rare breed of sales man with a full and rich sales technique which is a breath of fresh air these days compaired to the robotic and very plain styles we often see today.
Because the best sales technique is to get the buyer to like the salesman. If the customer likes you, they're more likely to buy the car. And they're more likely to like you if you're not pimping the car too hard... :sigh: Anyway.. so it goes..

Jaguar was definitely more true to itself and created much nicer cars under ford than it has since it’s been under Tata. I’d love a mid 2000’s XJ but why would I ever buy a new one when they look just like Chevy impalas?

This is the best looking modern Jag (meaning not E type). Looks even better in coupe version, convertibles are fun but something is always missing from the lines of the car. I like how Bill's show always feature weapons and toddler hiding places; and today, some murder thrown in just for fun!
Still enjoying my '97 after many years. Tended to the early timing chain issues (and several known smaller tidbits), and it has been wonderfully reliable. Most people think they want a "sports car" but really would relish and enjoy so much more a GT of this sort. Near 25 years on this car still gets fawned over by passers by. I should buy another low miler while the prices are low. Cheers

Correct. The V8 was designed and engineered by Jaguar and would have been built in the Radford Coventry engine plant (the old Daimler plant) but with the introduction of the V8 and exit of the 6 & 12 cyl motors, Ford decided to sell the engine plant for housing, and as you say, had a dedicated Jaguar cell in Bridgend where they built the engine. It never went into any other vehicle until Range Rovers started to use it in place of the BMW unit.
That is genuine veneer, Californian walnut burr, shipped to either Milan or Valencia where it was converted into sheets 0.6mm thick, and then selected sheet by sheet by a team from Jaguar before being shipped to Jaguar. Jag, like Rolls and Bentley, were the only car manufacturers that produced their own veneered components, others (BMW, MB etc) just sub contracted it out he veneers were cut to the size of the panels, and using heat and pressure in modern hydraulic presses, were pressed and bonded onto the substrate. Polishing and lacquering and more polishing, some by hand, some mechanically, takes place. A great team of guys were responsible for the work that you see here.
I own the same era XJR...I would not call it a reliable car, but it is 5x more reliable than similar BMW and Benz' of the same time period based on anecdotal conversations with colleagues who had similar era 5-series and S500's.
