I bought an XK just like this one in May to see me through the pandemic having sold a DB9 in March. At £9500 It is almost unbelievably good value, doing almost everything the Aston did 95% of the time for less than a third of the price. It's so well built it feels almost new, the drivetrain and interior are as tight as a drum, it's just about fast enough for the south of England, cheap insurance, cheap servicing, and it still looks fresh and modern. There is simply no excuse for them being so cheap.
@@computerhelpcc Biggest two things I missed from the DB9 were the noise of the V12 and the fact the interior just felt more special. There is also the fact it was an Aston Martin, which matters because I am an unashamed badge snob. I sold the XK after a year, but I tend to do that with most of my cars. It was an excellent ownership experience though and I'm still very happy I bought it. I even sold it for slightly more than I paid!
Great review. I have a 2007 XK, in Coupe form and I love it. In the 3 years I've had it, it's been very reliable, perfect for road trips in the UK and Europe and it still gets admiring comments from people, despite being a 13 year old car. A relatively cheap way to enjoy a V8 whilst we still can.
XK is seriously good and timeless looking car. I personally prefer the coupe though. Thanks for another great review. I really appreciate these. And we share the same taste for cars haha.

I have a 2009 XKR Portfolio that I bought when it was 2 years old. It's been nothing but amazing. The only problems were a thermostat - which on mind failed open so there wasn't any issue with overheating. Replaced the battery once. Caution with the 2009 XKR Portfolio, the brakes are $4,000 and last about 40-45K miles. This model has Alcon brakes and they are the best brakes I've ever experienced, but really pricey. I'm keeping this car forever. I've never even been slightly tempted to replace it with an F-Type or any other car. My whole life I always wanted to switch cars after a few years, not with this car, she's a keeper. The body is aluminum, so park if far from anywhere where it might get a door ding. One of my favorite things about it besides the beauty and power (425hp / 419Lb torque) is how it is so fun to slide it a bit in corners. The traction control is just enough, but allows for fun. I have scared myself with it a few times.
I just bought the exact car, without the Alcon brakes. Amazing car for the $$$. Almost super car performance, better reliability and styling for under 25K!

Another ace review JM. Please do the X100 earlier version, XKR coupe. So many facts - dashboard is a spitfire wing. Seats from Lear jets. Gap under headlight is a vent. A special drive.
Is that what the gap was for? Replaced a headlamp washer the other week, kept comparing the gap to see if I had it matched up when I popped its eye back in the socket. Near enough I think!
Very nice video, it gives a good insight in what driving an XK entails. I can say, from experience, that a normal aspirated V8 kind off suits the car and provides the smooth driving experience as shown in this video. I currently own an XKR and I have to say that the additional power adds to the attraction, but is not really necessary to be able to enjoy all the benefits of an XK. If you have a strong desire to race opponents at every traffic light or reaching 250 kph on the German autobahn I would certainly recommend the XKR. In any other case a 4.2 litre V8 would suffice. In addition to that, when smoothly driven, the fuel consumption of the 4.2i V8 is not even that bad, quite good actually. The fuel consumption of an XKR is much, much higher. In any case, the ride in an XK, whether it be a normal V8 or supercharged, always gives you that sensation that you are driving something special and is a true joy.
I have just bought exactly this car, black with tan interior. A real beauty. Love driving it. I watched this video first and want to thank you, Jayemm, for your excellent advice.
Agreed...I own a 2004 XKR which is beginning to become a classic. I get stares/neck strains and people wanting to know more about it every time I drive it 😎
The 4.2 AJ8 was a great engine. Truly revolutionary. The only think that I would change is that I personally think the coupe is the much better-looking version and the one I'd have.
I had an x100 XKR coupe for a few years (sold in 2013), at the time I was considering an x150, but as time has passed I prefer the x100 shape, its got a real classic Jag vibe, it was and still is a lot of car for the money, I loved cruising in mine and your video has just made me look at x100’s for sale again !
Thank you for this great video. It convinced me to look at the XK8 over the Benz SL's I was looking at. The Jaguar is far more elegant and doesn't drive like a tank as do many of the SL's. I love the interior of the car over the SL's austere interior.
Great review on a fabulous car. I was very fortunate to be able to retire at 55 in 2009. My last day was on a Friday, and on Monday - to celebrate - I bought a (then) 2-year old XK convertible with only 10,000 miles. Today, it has 94,000 miles and with meticulous care, is still new-like inside and out. I will have it until I am a very old man and they take the keys away! Very reliable too! Some folks mistake it for an Aston-Martin, but that doesn't bother me too much :) With the possible exception of the new Ferrari Roma, I think it is the best-looking car made after 2000.
@@JayEmmOnCars For sure...thanks for the reply! I am a new subscriber. By the way, I was so impressed with the XK that I also bought a mint 2002 Vanden Plas (only 45K miles) as well as a 25K-mile 2005 S-Type for my wife...which she loves. All three have been very reliable. If one is careful to choose the right year/model in a gently used example, Jaguars are impossible to beat for style, luxury, performance, and value.
Interesting how many car pundits are now singing the praises of the X150. When it was in production they 'bashed' it for: Not having the performance of the 911 Not having the build quality of the SL Not having the looks of the V8 Vantage Not having the cache of the Continental GT Not having the reliability of the SC430 (Lexus) Not having the handling of the Elise...etc. Those of us who actually bought the car and used it knew that whilst it had minor issues - it did everything very very well and has no 'real-world' shortcomings. It's the world's best GT, for reasonable money.
Nice review, I bought one of these 5 years ago with the idea of driving it for 6 months and getting into something else but it’s just been so nice, I could never part with it. It’s now done 320.000 km and with the occasional battery issues (on the 5th battery atm) it’s been very reliable. Mine will never be worth much as a classic, but it’s a great daily!
@@modmod392 Unfortunately the battery is located under the rear seat & you can only get to it through the trunk after you take out several pieces of trim. Also since it's my daily I leave it outside quite often. I'm now just replacing the battery twice a year.
Hi, I have a 2007 XK Jaguar Convertible, Winter Gold, 1 of 97, every option, 4.2 L - V8, six-speed auto stick with paddle shifters, and 46000 on the clock. In 07 they built them 6" wider and about 3" longer I believe. We do car shows with it. Just a supercar to drive. Enjoyment with a plus.
The non R as seen here is the one to go for if buying an early model. The R drinks significantly more and the suspension detracts from its overall Jagness. Plus they are quite twitchy in the wet! 👍 great review
We're a pretty cool bunch? Cheers Jay! Love my X100 coupe, prefer the lines of the coupe to the convertible. With the supercharger whine it never fails to make me grin like an idiot. I like the rumble too, that X150 seems a little muted. Perhaps a convertible should be a little more stately. Thank you for correcting yourself on the engine front. As I understand it they were developing the V8 unit when Ford bought them. Ford looked at the engine, looked at what they had to offer from their stable and decided Jag should stick with what they were designing. The 4.0 had a few teething problems (like the tensioners, bore liners etc) as when developing any new engine, but my 4.2 seems bullet proof (touch wood, lots of wood in the cabin to touch!)
I agree, as in that over the next 20-30yrs these XK’s coupes/convertibles will be looked at in the same way as we see the E Types today. If you have a mint XK now with low mileage, keep it that way and in years to come it will go towards a nice little retirement fund. As they will be a future, desirable, collectors car. 👍
Hi Jay Might be wrong but I don’t think that was J gate. My 2004 XK8 has a J gate which gives you manual from 5th gear down. Love the channel. Great honest delivery without being too technical so easy to follow. Regards Den
My dad used to own one of these (a coupé, though) for a few years. He bought it as a dealer demo car with a big reduction and it was a lovely car with a surprisingly loud exhaust for a stock car. The thing is: my dad's not a very good driver and the car scared him a few times in the wet, so he got a Discovery 4 next to it as a daily driver. That was the XK's nemesis: if you didn't drive it for 2 weeks, it would drain its 12V battery and all the electronics would go wonky. So he sold it after 2 years and I still miss that car. Even though it was not sporty or particularly roomy, but it just felt like a warm bath on a cold winter's day...
I've seen more XKs on the road than the F Type, although that might be because the XK looks more distinctively a Jaguar as opposed to the more nebulous F Type. I agree that the styling has aged well and appeals more to genuine Jaguar enthusiasts.
You've pretty much reviewed both of my cars now. The Suzuki Swift Sport some years ago, and now an XK. I have the 2010 convertible with the n/a 5.0 engine and it's all I could need. Other than the obvious extra power and minor styling tweaks, it differs in interior trim (nicer buttons etc), endlessly adjustable seats, and standard active suspension. I'm told the 5.0 cars are notably firmer, but it's still a refined cruiser. I only wish it was a manual; I use it in Sport/Manual all the time, even dawdling around town.
Yessir Especially the XKR it deprecated lovely but within 15-20 year it will go up like a classic. I thing the BMW Z3 or Z4 (aka original roadster) will be a classic around that time too.
Lol "A Boxster for this amount of money would tear this road a new one." Very entertaining host. If the back seat held my kids I'd buy one yesterday, beautiful car.
I think this is your best video yet, probably because i love these XK's. Jags definitely improve with age. The engines were made in bridgend in Wales. It shared only 2 components from ford, a woodruff key on the crank and i can't remember the other part.
I was shopping for either an XK or F-type 2 years ago and ended up with the XK for exactly this reason, the F-type has followed the Germanic black on black on black and very solid route, its absolutely fine but it does nothing for me, the slight eccentric flair of the XK appealed much more
@@chrisbeaumont6166 Yes, I'm pleasantly surprised with a tentative look at AutoTrader to see that the thing sitting on my drive, that hardly gets driven, hasn't wasted me 1000s in depreciation 😄
I paid 17K USD for an 07 4.2 conv with 36K in excellent condition last year...8 months later I am still watching videos like this - and could not agree more about what people say about this car. I was kid during the 'muscle car" era. This car is as fast (or faster) than most of those. But if you own one you won't drive it that way - you'll cruise. You will marvel at how smooth it is...how precise the shifts are...how comfortable you are. It is an awesome car.
A stunning looking car and its a Jag! I would love one, the only thing that stops me getting one is the extortionate road tax levied on it by the car hating, cash grabbing government. Great review.
The collector car in this range is the XKR 4.2 supercharged coupe which ended in 2005. These, with all the extras of Brembo brakes , adaptive cruise control etc. etc. etc. are most sought after already.
Very nice video. I have an 07 XK and the only thing that gives it's age away is the power antenna. Looking forward to blasting some DP Mode and some pop Italian music while looking down at onlookers from the tops of my shades!! Peace!!
I was contracted to work for Jaguar (involved with the smart airbag systems) and it was probably the most enjoyable eye-opening experience I had. Everyone seemed quite cheery there.
Except the public don't buy enough of their cars. A dealer who sold different marques told me that Jags are driven by relatively conservative motorists and those German autos that begin with a B in the name are driven by w******!
The XK is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and it will DEFINITELY be a future classic. I don't see that happening with XK8 because the styling was too much "90'S". This styling is absolutely timeless... just like Porsche 928 and BMW 8-series (save the pop-up headlights).
xk8 I see it way more of, the design on the xk8 is so simple and clean, the curve under the body and the timeless interior (aside from some of the switches) make it a car thats already appreciating, everyone on the road looks at it satisfyingly, just very nice to the eyes. the xk is a great car but I less prefer the big chunky plastic lights and how the bottom half of the car goes flat down like any other from the time. otherwise x150s are great cars and looking to find one soon.
I really struggled to pick between the two when I was shopping, I think the front end of the X100 is stunning, timeless and utterly evocative of the e-type, the X150's muscular rear end appealed to me more than the X100 though and the extra interior space especially sold it to me
Another great review, and interested to get your opinion as a coupe would suit me well. Like you say, mission-creep, in this car's case towards "Oh, but if it had a manual" is the distraction. Plus the VED on a post March 2006 example. LOL'd at the Elise comment.
This must be the most beautiful car ever. It´s so perfect with this color. Complete with the CD from western movie Young Guns II by Jon Bon Jovi. The Jaguar XK is how I want a car to be in every aspect.

All very well and good James, that car is a genuine future classic i agree. What i'd like to draw attention to is the car at 01:25. Is that a Series 3 I spie in front of you?

Love 'em! It's kind of a "not-particularly-revolutionary" shape, an obvious Ian Callum design, or at least heavily influenced by him, but BY GOD I love this shape! Whether it's the earlier XK8/R, the Aston DB7 or any of a multitude of other cars which share these lines, it's probably my favourite "modern" design overall. SAME thing for me. I went to 911, far better drivers car, but miss the style inside and out of the XKR 100
Thank you for this great video. It convinced me to look at the XK8 over the Benz SL's I was looking at. The Jaguar is far more elegant and doesn't drive like a tank as do many of the SL's. I love the interior of the car over the SL's austere interior.
Glad you gave them a chance :)
How many viewers noticed, this is one of the rarest of videos? How many videos end with a SMILE on JayEmm's lips as the credits roll?
One of my cars and I will not sell it 😍😍😍, thanks for the review 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
A fine way to spend retirement!
@@murphman76 My car is a 2007 XJ8L and thanks to Ford, has been utterly reliable and 29mpg at 75mph all day long.
Interesting how many car pundits are now singing the praises of the X150.
When it was in production they 'bashed' it for:
Not having the performance of the 911
Not having the build quality of the SL
Not having the looks of the V8 Vantage
Not having the cache of the Continental GT
Not having the reliability of the SC430 (Lexus)
Not having the handling of the Elise...etc.
Those of us who actually bought the car and used it knew that whilst it had minor issues - it did everything very very well and has no 'real-world' shortcomings. It's the world's best GT, for reasonable money.
I never bashed the X150... hell, I only got into car reviews as it was ending production
@@JayEmmOnCars I didn't mean you, but thanks for the video.
I just purchased an XKR 4.2 coupe this weekend. Lovely car.
Yeah you gotta change the battery every 2 years, same with my 5.0 coupe. Some dudes even say "Fuck it" and change the battery every year
Try a CTEK trickle charger. May well help the situation.
@@modmod392 Unfortunately the battery is located under the rear seat & you can only get to it through the trunk after you take out several pieces of trim. Also since it's my daily I leave it outside quite often. I'm now just replacing the battery twice a year.
@@blackxfire04 Just swapped the battery on my 2010. I had no idea it had to be changed as frequently as that! Any idea why?
@@oosterhouw Also it's easy to attach a tender, there's points in the boot and you attach a pigtail plug. Two batts a year is crazy!
Yes the R is a handful in anything but the dry. A problem they never solved
Not a problem cause that’s the fun part
@@714439 not so much when your late for work and it’s raining 😂
Love the original XK8/XKR & love this version as well
Jay, i salute you, struck many chords in my soul with this one...... happy 200k mate.
When I see the wood interior I just hear Ron Burgundy saying 'mahogany'. I'd happily cruise round in one of these.
Hi Jay
Might be wrong but I don’t think that was J gate. My 2004 XK8 has a J gate which gives you manual from 5th gear down.
Love the channel. Great honest delivery without being too technical so easy to follow.
Regards
Den
I believe it is called the L gate
Took me a few years to find my MY 2004 XKR convertible in New Zealand. Now with 96,000 km virtually trouble free thanks I think to Ford
I had the xkr coupe 4.2 and I loved it. The best quality/price /enjoyment ratio in the market !
100% with you on the "oh, its the new xx" even when its 15 to 20 years old.
I have a 2007 XKR. Best car that I have ever had. That includes a V12 6 litre Lister XJS. Pure fun.
Yessir Especially the XKR it deprecated lovely but within 15-20 year it will go up like a classic. I thing the BMW Z3 or Z4 (aka original roadster) will be a classic around that time too.
Got a a Dec06 registered coupe a few months ago with 98k miles. Such a lovely car :)
Very nice review. I can very much relate to how you think about cars.
What a stunning looking thing.
Sump plug I think
@@lukeshardlow768 cheers Luke.
To my eyes the XK's interior looks so much nicer than the F-Type's!
I was shopping for either an XK or F-type 2 years ago and ended up with the XK for exactly this reason, the F-type has followed the Germanic black on black on black and very solid route, its absolutely fine but it does nothing for me, the slight eccentric flair of the XK appealed much more
@@chrisbeaumont6166 Me too, F-Type wasn't refined enough, not Jaguary enough, got a 45k mile facelift XKR 5.0 for same as cheapest F-Type
@@getawayhs2856 I do think it's telling that XKs seem to be holding value better than F-types
@@chrisbeaumont6166 Yes, I'm pleasantly surprised with a tentative look at AutoTrader to see that the thing sitting on my drive, that hardly gets driven, hasn't wasted me 1000s in depreciation 😄
@@getawayhs2856 tell me about it! I've never owned a car that I've not lost over 50% on, minimum!
Stunning car! I have a facelift 2013 5.0 convertible if you ever wanted to do a direct comparison 👍
Ah, one of the cars on my "unattainable" wishlist. Such a divine sound, honestly.
That is a lovely car...many thanks for doing this review.
Liked the review, had been thinking about the xk coupe, and you pushed me over the edge.
So now I’ve got one and I love it
Thanks for the push.
The collector car in this range is the XKR 4.2 supercharged coupe which ended in 2005. These, with all the extras of Brembo brakes , adaptive cruise control etc. etc. etc. are most sought after already.
R pack. That is the key term you need to know
Very nice video. I have an 07 XK and the only thing that gives it's age away is the power antenna. Looking forward to blasting some DP Mode and some pop Italian music while looking down at onlookers from the tops of my shades!! Peace!!
Pull fuse 9 behind the rear seats and the antenna will stay down 😉
I have a 2008 XKR Convertible and I love it. Sounds fabulous, goes like the clappers and looks sensational.... but a costly mistress!
Took my 2012 5.0 V8 to France on a tour, got 31 mpg which I though excellent.
I have a 4.2 coupe and can hardly believe how good it is and how undervalued
I have a 4.2 coupe too. The best gt car of his era, very undervalued
No question, a great soft-top.
Love those Jags..great video..👍👍
I have one from 2013. Convertible. Done 45000 miles. great car.
really love the outro vibe... us 80s kids i suppose :D .. also, considering finding one post-2011 facelift coupe in next couple years
The XK is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and it will DEFINITELY be a future classic.
An old tasty V8 review from Jay. Sorted!!
I might be slightly biased but I prefer the looks of my previous gen Xkr, these are very nice cars though and very good value at the moment!
I really struggled to pick between the two when I was shopping, I think the front end of the X100 is stunning, timeless and utterly evocative of the e-type, the X150's muscular rear end appealed to me more than the X100 though and the extra interior space especially sold it to me
Part of me feels that I shouldn't have seen this yet....... Very glad I did though, fantastic review as ever!!
Hello, person from the future! Or from the past... I dunno...
@@rickc2102 Hello, person in 2021! That is a mystery to remain unsolved....
I had one of the old ones, brought nearly 10 years ago for £4k!! absolute steal!
Another great review, and interested to get your opinion as a coupe would suit me well. Like you say, mission-creep, in this car's case towards "Oh, but if it had a manual" is the distraction. Plus the VED on a post March 2006 example. LOL'd at the Elise comment.
The Coupe is a fine car and I have reviewed one, an R anyway
Perfect car and spec for your aspiring Terry thomas types.
I’m a 21 year old and have loved these since I was 10. Some say I was born a middle aged man...
Me too... 25 and I've got one.. must be dreaming!
Me too. But I can't quite afford one, I had the chance once but wussed out on spending £10k+ on it.
This must be the most beautiful car ever. It´s so perfect with this color. Complete with the CD from western movie Young Guns II by Jon Bon Jovi. The Jaguar XK is how I want a car to be in every aspect.
I'd love to see you review a late XJS convertible
J i have been a jag lover for years some of them are so sweet l would get the xkr like u said the 5 litle would be so much better but like i said l love jags a good review keep up the wokkeep safe

Damn! J@y€mm...you just made me into it pretty much....Jag XK has got so much style and spirit through the time....Beemer 6-series of that era has got cool ageing very well..but it has freezing cool image dry of no passion....meanwhile Jag....is like a warm hug....

I love how the convertible looks
All very well and good James, that car is a genuine future classic i agree. What i'd like to draw attention to is the car at 01:25. Is that a Series 3 I spie in front of you?
Great video as always. If your looking for an x100 model to try I have a 2003 4.2 xk8 coupe but live in Dublin (not ideal given current climate). Am sure that John from the "tothegarage" youtube channel or the granblogismo youtube channel would gladly lend you one of theirs to feature.
Almost snap. Mine is the 2003 4.2 XKR. What spec? Black with the red and black two tone interior. I am a sucker for two tone seats.
I've watched some of "tothegarage", had some handy hints from him when doing little jobs on the car.
@@sparky4878 Jesus no thats an outrageous spec!! I'd like to see it. I think (and I could be wrong) Pacific Blue with oatmeal leather interior and the burr walnut dash etc. Bit reserved compared to yours 🤣👍🏼
@@peterfagan8442 original owner must have ticked the drug dealer spec option. Tinted glass and on the 20" Detroits, birds eye maple dash. When I see photos of other cars the maple is brown but in my car, perhaps it's the tints or my eyes, looks more green. Maybe some are greener. About the only thing that is green with a V8!
Only ever driven the 5.0 V8 Supercharged model (poor me!) and that was only for a weekend, and I don't normally go in for that "vibe" but something about driving one of these really makes you feel like a "somebody"!
If it looks as good as this, being revolutionary is not immediately necessary, I guess.

Well done James....well rounded review...
Thanks for this, it's nice to see you in my part of the world, your right a Porsche would tear up these country roads, but there missing the point your in a lovely part of the world, the scenery is incredible, it's nice driving up out of Usk up into the hills then dropping down into Tintern into the Wye Valley in an open top car in a summers evening , you have the right car for this , shear bliss. Dioch
I currently have a 4.0 S-Type. One of these could be my next move, but it would have to be a supercharged coupe. I quite like the classic look of the early cars with the bonnet vents.
Great choice of road there mate; one of the finest routes in Monmouthshire
Thank you for the review. Time to check out Autotrader and do some serious research. Future classic for sure - easy to work on as a DIY home mechanic. Lots of interchangeable parts not like a Merc SL55 that would freak you out and cost a bomb to maintain.
