    One additional thing I've found is that an extra fast rod will help you keep your bait out of snags especially in rocks and shells. Fast can be good too, moderate gets snagged a lot!

    All great tips Matt! Thing is, I learned long ago, was if you ain't fishing snags you're not fishing fish (in cases where you're fishing cover).Another tip is if you're fishing weeds in wind, often times the wind tends to bend them in the that direction. If you cast upwind and work your lure with the wind it is much less likely to snag the salad. Really kinds slithers through going with the "grain". Long time musky guy (primarily) but really enjoy your tips and experience.

    Most of my fishing is top water and dont see concerns like that . But you did have some good thoughts on those issues. I do throw a lot of crank baits and your right about rod position . Thanks for taking time out of your day to make this video.

    Thanks for elaborating on this, Matt. As a casual/recreational angler struggling to get bites most days, one of the most frustrating things for me is (as you described) when I'm getting bit in an area, get snagged, & completely blow out the area retrieving my rig. 😊

    Not to beat a dead horse but I told somebody where my favorite saltwater spot is in Louisiana (that’s where I’m from) for redfish. I live in northwest Arkansas now so I didn’t mind helping the guy out. Anyway, it’s over rock using a swim bait and THE first thing I told him was if he hung up too much on 1/4, go to 1/8. Keep those videos coming sir. You got a lot of good comments on this one.

    Belly weighted or back weighted hooks sometime help me go glide a soft plastic bait over rocks and shells instead of a jighead or bullet sinker. Yes, the Ozark rig is a good option to reduce the chances of the lure becoming snagged in rocks or brush. I have mixed results with free rig weight. Lighter being less prone to snag than a heavier weight in the same circumstances.
    A saltwater tip is to remove the front hook from shallow running crankbaits. Less chance of the lure with only a rear hook catching on oyster shells. Removing the front hook changes the center of gravity for the lure and, of course, reduces the weight slightly. The lure will tend to run shallower with only the rear hook in place.

    I made some custom compact spinnerbaits which help around timber. They have a shorter & stiffer wire. I bought the blanks from Lure Parts Online. I custom painted them, tied on skirts, & added the spinners/beads/swivels. People often forget how well a spinnerbait comes through cover.

    If you are fishing a tube and getting hung up a lot put a foam ear plug inside the tube. Makes it more buoyant and will not snag as much. Also you can soak those ear plugs in your favorite fish attractant

    Using angles helps a lot for lay downs and snags. It also forces you to pick apart cover a bit more, while lessening your chances of hanging up.

    A pro once told me to use the heaviest sinker I could get away with. I think it’s the opposite, throw the lightest you can. Depth and cover dictate my choices.

    I may have caught a record spotted bass today. I was using a micro crankbait and caught a 3-inch spotted bass on a treble hook. But hey, it was a bass. LOL.

    I need some tips for a drop shot specifically. I find myself hanging up the weight in rocks so frequently. It doesn’t seem to matter which shape I try. I always Texas rig my plastics, but that weight finds cracks in the rocks SO OFTEN😂

  • @rifleman522
    @rifleman522 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Almost impossible to reduce hanging up in Louisiana waters unless you use Texas rig only. I do use weedguards as much as possible on baits that will allow it.

    Lots of people who fish for snook with big jigs will tell you that if you're not getting snagged you aren't going to catch fish. And I lose a lot of 1/4 oz jigs on the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay trying to catch flounder. The problem is that Gulp sucks on weedless rigs, and other soft plastics don't get as many bites. Plus the hookup ratio is worse with hidden hooks. But weedless is going to be the only way to fish soon, the drifting marsh grass and stuff is getting bad. An exposed jig hook catches a lot of grass and stuff now and it'll get worse until Fall.

    • @cloutmaster965
      @cloutmaster965 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I caught a bunch of reds, trout and flounder yesterday throwing a dirty jigs swimjig. Being weedless will allow you to cover more water and spend less time stuck in grass or other snags. Whoever told you that saying has no idea what they’re talking about.

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@cloutmaster965 ever fished Flair Hawks in passes and around bridges? If you don't fish them near the rocks you don't catch much. Getting snagged is inevitable. Newer weedless stuff might work for that situation without snagging as much.
      I fished this morning for a couple hours on a beach in the Chesapeake and I couldn't avoid the drifting marsh grass. It's getting bad. The wind made it worse. This evening I tried the pier at Fort Monroe and nobody was catching anything. That's a place with plenty of snags and weedless helps but you still lose rigs occasionally. The flounder are near the rocks and pilings. But we're only catching tiny flat fish right now unless you have a boat. The wind was blowing too much for the kayak so we caught nothing. I couldn't get a bite on Gulp, and around here that means nothing is biting. I wish there was a better way to make Gulp weedless.

      @@cloutmaster965 I just looked at those jigs. I've never tried bass jigs in the saltwater but it's not a bad idea. I think I have a couple. I'll get a few more to try. What kind of tackle do you use for those?

    • @cloutmaster965
      @cloutmaster965 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@comfortablynumb9342 medium heavy-heavy, fast action bass rod and 15lb flouro leader or mainline. 4-6 inch swimbaits work well as a trailer. I was on my kayak with 15-20mph gusts yesterday so i feel you there. Just make sure to do a bass hookset when you get bit since you need to get the hook in their mouth. If you’re around flounder zman works great cuz of them being made of elastomer. U should also look into weedless rigging flukes around grass

    Good tips, clever. Here’s a great one - ahh, I can’t give it away, sorry 😞 .. Well, fine, here it is… use as light a gauge of hook as you can get away with and a lb test line strong enough to straighten that hook if snagged. It allows you to hook fish without that “weed less” guard and unless you hook a ten pound trophy bass (which could happen I admit) your hook probably won’t straighten out on a fish.

  • @oldfishermanandhisdog
    @oldfishermanandhisdog 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    How do I prevent a dropshot on a shell bar from getting hung? Not the hook that hangs, it's the weight. I've tried different style weights, different size weights with not much success.

    • @davidcloyd1296
      @davidcloyd1296 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Attach the weight with a weak knot or a lighter lb test line. It’ll break off and you’ll lose the crappy lead weight instead of your whole rig.

    • @OldMysticFantasist
      @OldMysticFantasist 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe it's one you've already tried, but I'd suggest some design of a long dragging weight or bottom bouncing weight (i. e. Eagle Claw).
