I love his acting too. At the end of the scene, with all the applause he gets, it would be hard not to smile, if not actually take a bow, but he remains grim and steely eyed, searching the audience for signs that Valjean is hiding among them, or that one of them will fall from grace.
I LOVE this analysis! “Stars” was the first piece my vocal coach gave me and it’s a very difficult song. While it’s not a huge range for a baritone, it’s just as much acting as it is singing. Philip Quast did a masterful job and will always be my favorite Javert. For anyone interested, here’s an interview Quast gave where he talks about breaking down the role of Javert: th-cam.com/video/Y6F5QgCXT4c/w-d-xo.html
Every time I go to see Les Mis this is my favorite song. Phillip Quast is my all time favorite, it gives me the chills. No one can match him. His acting us great too, he is 100% Invested in the song.
Thanks, great analysis. Perfect example of how to sing in English by a real baritone. That last picture on the last note did show a lot. I noticed that he was showing his top teeth which is a common technique to lift the soft palate.
You are so delightful. I am a musical theatre performer with a similar type of voice to Phillip. He’s my hero! It’s so cool listening to you explain his secrets! Thanks so much.
He's amazing! Thanks for pointing out some of the techniques he uses to be so amazing. It's been decades since I sang in the University Chorus at the University of Illinois, but lately I've been working on "Stars." Quast is so inspiring! If could could sing it even half as well as he does, I'd be great!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is a fantastic analysis. I have the opportunity to sing this and have learned so much just just from the first dozen times I've watched it. I'm already checking out your other videos.
This is so fun to watch! Love PQ - thanks!! Do you know of Anthony Warlow? Another Australian singer whom I always thought has better singer techniques than PQ. Would you be interested in doing an analysis on his singing? That would be lovely!! =)
He seems arrogant in his black-and-white view of the law, yet you hear the awe in his voice as he considers the magnificence of the stars above, especially on "stars" and "scarce."
Would love to see your analysis/reaction of Andrew Rannells' Tony performance of "I Believe", thought it was amazing, he owned his performance and his singing/acting was awesome
I love the performance not just because of the voice. It's how he conveys what Javert sees as his God given mission, which is to throw Jean back in prison and put order back into his perception of what the world should be. What's even more impressive is that he was(from what I understand) dealing with some serious stage fright at the time.
can asthmatic people sustain like him?haha, sorry for my question.thank you so much. i was born with asthma since a baby even with bronchitis. so i struggle alot but i really enjoyed and is mesmerized with classical singing.

thank you for this analysis. this video has the entertainment of a reaction video but also the in-depth insight of a voice lesson. Can you do a vocal analysis of Frank Sinatra? i believe he's been trained classically, you can hear it in his higher notes.
I love his acting too. At the end of the scene, with all the applause he gets, it would be hard not to smile, if not actually take a bow, but he remains grim and steely eyed, searching the audience for signs that Valjean is hiding among them, or that one of them will fall from grace.
I noticed that as well. Never breaks character. He is the epitome of professionalism in anything he does that I've seen.
Phillip Quast version of Stars is the very best ever. Absolutely spine tingling overwhelming. Superb. ✨
Philip is AMAZING! his version of "Stars" is truly phenomenal.
There is a video on you tube behind the red curtain with Phillip Quast where he is interviewed and he explains how he sings it.He is amazing.
I watched it. I feared it would be boring, but it became riveting!
PQ could narrate the drying of a coat of paint, and it would be riveting.
Yes. Philip Quast is phenomenal. I could listen to him all day.
He is literally one of the all time greats!! Utter perfection! He is classically trained and you can absolutely tell. I adore his voice.
He is definitely the best Javert … and you understand why he is so good after viewing his interview in the show called behind the red curtain 😉

Philip Quast is Javert... I absolutely love his performances.
Philip Quast is the true master
Quest is definitely one of the best… he starts very soft… slowly opens up.
And people are actually hung up on that norm Lewis guy..dude.
Phillip nails it. Jeremy Secomb is a pretty close second.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is a fantastic analysis. I have the opportunity to sing this and have learned so much just just from the first dozen times I've watched it. I'm already checking out your other videos.

Philip Quast is the only Javert. The rest are merely substitutes.
