i hear this every night. i've never seen the owl, but this is definitely the noise it makes :) it makes me so happy knowing that it's out there, and i hope it knows how much i cherish hearing it sing
When the moon is bright & there's little cloud, stand out on your door step watching the sky. You will have to be patient, but eventually you will see it fly past. They are very distinctive. I've have them around my place for 15 years.

I live in zone 2 of London in a leafy part of islington right by the "woodland walk" a very much loved area with everyone. For the past 3 years I've heard both Male and Female tawny outside my windows. I can't even start to say how delighted and such a privilege to hear this beautiful owl song in the warm evening and early hour's of the morning. These birds are on the endangered list and to hear them in London is incredible.

This is what I am hearing in the Clyde valley at 6 am. I’m not too far from Lanark. I love listening to them, this is just one of the many reasons I love living in a rural community.
I've always been fascinated by owls and birds of prey, I was lucky enough to see one fly off at night from a tree just by the block of flats I used to live in. It was quite impressive, though they're nowhere near as powerful as an eagle or great horned owl, they do appear to be very territorial and aggressive. I think they are known to fight off other owls. They are also more and more widespread in major cities, such is their ability to adapt to different environments. I find the keewit keewit calls very spooky and yet so fascinating.
Living in Luton UK , just heard this sound for the first time and found it :) Looked out of my window and could see its shadow up the TV cables with the moon just behind it , they are bigger than I thought and wouldn’t expect to find them here
there's a nature reserve that sits behind my parents' property and sometimes I hear these beautiful, cute birbs, calling in the nature reserve from time to time

I currently am living in a gazebo on the farm I work at. I'm tucked away cozy in the woods. At 8:30ish pm, every night, I hear this owl above me. He brings me peace and makes me feel at home.
The female tawny call is nostalgic to me as it reminds me of my local scout campsite. However it certainly isn’t nostalgic when they keep me up all night!
I sometimes hear these sorts of owls at 2am right outside my bedroom window. They also remind me of when I used to watch the early Thomas the tank engine episodes when I was a little kid. In some of the Thomas the tank engine episodes especially the early ones I used to hear these sorts of owls hooting then in the back ground. I do like owls. 🦉

They are beautiful but found in towns also.. I have a spinney at the bottom of my garden in Ealing London & I am hearing Tawneys every evening. Ealing has a lot of open space but where I am is quite built up bar the spinney (abandoned allotments) at the btm of my garden.
We have a family of them here in the Botanical Gardens in Glasgow. I have just been out listening to them and watched a couple fly from tree to tree from my viewpoint outside the park. A magical experience, made more-so when I turned and saw a fox sitting not far behind me, watching me watching them! The city at it's very best at night when the wildlife take over.
I live near the forests, and often during summer, i would be able to hear this fella singing at nighttime. It was calming to listen to. But one october morning, i saw something moving near our outdoor pond. We have fish there, so me and my dad were worried it was the harrier. We went out, only to the shocking sight of a tawny owl wrapped up in our fish net. The wings were damaged, so we called the closest animal rescue possible. The little guy was horribly calm. The rescue came and took the owl in, and a few weeks later it was released in our area again. I hope to hear it sing again during the night.
We used to have a tawny that would sit on the arm of our sycamore tree before we culled it. You used to be able to see it’s silhouette against the moon, that plus its songs were beautiful. Anyways I still hear them all the time and just again not long ago so I went to my window and did a little hoot back to it and I saw it take off from this tall tree and swoop silently directly over my head/roof. I looked up because I’ve got a skylight window and it was so close I could easily make out its outline against the night. Wonderful moment, had to share.. lol
There’s at least four of these owls living in a stand of trees next to my house by the Thames near Maidenhead - it would seem there’s more than likely two pairs, since I regularly hear them calling to each other in the familiar duet of ‘tu-whit, tu-who’ calls.
Heard the screech sound through the night whilst camping near Barnard Castle. The sound was very loud, the bird must have been close probably perched on the fence post 2 metres from our tent. The sound was very loud and quite scary, had I not guessed it was an owl. It woke us and continued for quite a while before moving away into the distance. An experience worth being woken up for. Thanks for confirming it was a tawny owl
Same here; each summer I hear new, different toned calls - could it be fledglings learning to call/sing? This year's new ones just begun and sounds very breathy or hoarse! They're in the trees right next to my house! :)
