Thank you for this. I just picked one of these up, however the electronics don’t appear to be working. I believe if I chose X on the wheel I can use it without the electronics, however there is no way to set the shutter speed. Does this mean the camera is effectively useless, or is it worth trying?

I don't have one of these cameras sitting around here to try again. The "X" position is for 1/90 second flash sync. I'm not sure if that setting works without batteries. The "B" setting is supposed to work, even if batteries are dead, so you could try that. As for the electronics, before giving up, I'd really look at that battery holder, and shine a flashlight down into the part of the camera it slides into. Make sure all the contacts are clean. Make sure the batteries are for sure good. I don't have that battery holder to look at closely myself, but I'd think it is set up to connect the four batteries in series to produce about 6 volts at a couple of contacts on the exterior of the case, that then mate up with contacts down inside the camera. A good step would be to use a volt meter set to "DC voltage" and an appropriate range for the approximate 6 volts that it should be, to check the voltage at the contacts on the battery holder with batteries in place. At least then you'd know the power is getting to the contacts on the battery holder that mate up with those in the camera. Good luck.

The ZE can also be used without batteries. If you set the shutter mode selector to "X" the shutter operates at 1/90 sec. Simply use the Sunny 16 Rule to figure the aperture setting for your weather conditions.
