I had this for the N64 and as a racing game, i really enjoyed playing. I remember doing one race at full distance with full damage on and the race i was in on the last lap i think or a few laps before can't remember exactly. I was nursing high brake rate and the brakes failed and i retired so close to the end.
Great review. Have this for Dreamcast and its a fun time now and again. Aren't the tracks in this game actually the real layouts though, minus the names? Seems to just be Imola, Australia etc. just as they are in F1 World Grand Prix
@@bungieman2810 I just received my copy today and have been playing it. I agree. It's more fluid. My copy has kind of a dimmed label, almost pink in color instead of red so I plan to sell it and get a better looking copy. But, it's got more camera view options and the motion is more fluid. It's actually easier too though, which I'm not sure is a good thing or not. I like the most realistic experience possible when it comes to physics. I can't deny it's more enjoyable and it still isn't an easy racer.
@@bungieman2810 I've been playing more of it and it's definitely more satisfying and fun, not too easy, kind of just perfect. I like how the physics do feel slightly more real than the other F1 games. The turning in f1 world grand prix is jerky and feels disconnected in a way.
So that might explain why Ubisoft went for F1 Racing Championship after putting this out on the Dreamcast, and F1 World Grand Prix 1 and 2 already being released from Video System (who developed F1 Racing Championship).
There are so many N64 racing games that i often confuse them and loose track on the ones i have and the ones i don´t :p but now i know i need this one!
Great review, but one thing you left out was when you drive over grass, it accumulates on the wheels; really nice touch and another racing game to add to your N64 library. Hmm, think I'm gonna start collecting N64 games right now.
Another nice touch I enjoyed was that the banking at Monza was represented. As someone that loved F1 and had just learned about that part of the track's history when this game was new, I got a kick out of seeing a glimpse or two of it in Monaco Grand Prix.
I missed out on this game but i loved workd grand prix for the n64. It was so soothing playing as a child. I'd imagine they have more modern versions of this game?
my first game with 1080 snowboarding when bought the console for me is the best memories after some time i got f1 word grand prix ii first day release my father on day made my dream true got me the ice blue console wich i still have and works and all games like New
@@ntl9974 In my opinion yes. Maybe not graphics wise but physics/playability. Mind it's not perfect in race mode (like most of the other games), but it's extremly satisfying in time mode to go for fastest lap against yourself.
Good point. I think licensed games will definitely sell better and if a developer can't get those licenses, they should set out to make an "over the top fun" arcade game (Crusin series, burnout, Rush, etc...) How I miss those glory days
The biggest con for any licensed game is that they cannot be sold forever, as sooner or later, when the license expires, it will be taken down from digital storefronts or pulled from shelves, and they have to be renewed in order to keep them selling. There were many noteworthy licensed games that have been taken down after a half-decade or so after their respective license has expired. One example is Scott Pilgrim VS. The World, a game that has been adored by fans of the comic series of the same name, but has since been taken down after its license had expired. Personally, I prefer games with no licenses whatsoever, as they are always forever, as long as they don't have a license.
You could rename every racer in this game if you wanted. The developers were also good to match colour schemes to teams at the time. I spent a couple hours renaming every racing with a real F1 driver. Once that was done I didn’t even notice the lack of licenses, and I always perfected the actual gameplay to the other N64 F1 games.
@@shaun8062 hey, sorry I meant prefer the gameplay. Monaco GP always had the best gameplay in my opinion. I actually went back and played all the GP N64 games since I posted this and it still stands true
@@shaun8062 I felt the controls were a bit crisper, audio was better, and a bit less fog effect. I owned both back in the day and enjoyed both. I owned Monaco first, and picked up WGP after for the official licenses. The later looked ( in my mind at the time) just like a race in TV.
@@jaguarspeed I've noticed on WGP when you are in cockpit mode or first person bumper view, it seems extremely jerky (which it should) but almost to the point the graphics can't keep up, as if it glitches frequently or the frame rate slows like a slideshow. Do you think it does that on MGP? I will be getting it soon and I hope it works better. I like close up view and WGP just makes it unbearable.
The problem with licensed F1 games is that the sponsors these days tend to get quite defensive about the cars being smashed up and obscuring their logos, which is why the damage model in the Codemasters F1 games often leaves a lot to be desired. It's also why in the career modes you never get drivers changing teams. I think back in the late 1990's you had a lot more freedom with the F1 license whereas today there are better sims like RFactor 2 or Project cars that don't have the full F1 license and they can make much more immersive experiences; for me the Codemasters F1 games today are a bit stale and also ridden with bugs. The inconsistent penalty system and the Online modes especially are a bit of a long-running joke. By the way I thought you were a bit harsh on Formula E; that's a series that I love because the racing is a lot more action packed than F1, but sadly I can't see it having an official game because it's simply not popular or well known enough. Then again at least you know the difference between Formula E and F1, which is better than most people.
No sign of Ubisoft on my F1 World Grand Prix box, if that's what you meant. Looks like it was published by Video System in the US. And like the sequel to Monaco Grand Prix (F1 Racing Championship), F1 World Grand Prix II's release in North America was cancelled, so I don't know who the publisher would've been for it.
Any game that features exotic supercars or hypercars needs official licensing. I don't want to drive a car that looks kind of like a Lamborghini, I want to drive a Lamborghini. Same with Aston Martins, Ferraris, etc.
Doesn't sound like Formula E to me. And hearing the same 20 lines of commentary gets old, so the lack of it here was a plus. And you could edit the driver names to match the real life names (Ubisoft made it pretty obvious to figure out with the substitute names like "D. Mill"). While a memory card is used with this game, these name edits actually were saved to the cartridge. I still have the correct names on my cartridge, which went a long ways towards addressing the lack of a FIA license if one was willing to go about fixing it manually. Great F1 game for its day and a game I liked much more than F1 World Grand Prix thanks to the handling model (F1WGP's peculiar steering setup was awful and I never got used to it),. The distortion to 16:9 proportions in this video and seeing it on something other than a CRT doesn't do its visuals any favors in 2018 though, but while still showing its age, it's not rough on my eyes when I play it on my Sony Trinitron today. Finally, as a big fan of this on the N64, I was very sad when we didn't get the sequel to it, F1 Racing Championship. Improved version of this engine and handling, the addition of expansion pack support, the inclusion of Indianapolis and Sepang (Although you lose Argentina since it was off the calendar by that point), and an official F1 license. Would've been perfect for me back around 2000. At least thanks to an Everdrive cartridge, I've been able to belatedly experience it.
I personally like formula E - its getting better I feel just the electric engines will be coming a long way in years to come. still can't beat the roar of petrol though :)
I have nothing to add to a conversation about F1 racing but I'm just glad that you're uploading regularly again, always love hearing from you.

This game was the best f1 game released on the 64. You could actually feel the grip and when it rained it actually felt tougher.

The cars are loosely based on the F1 1998 lineup. Even the driver names were "knockoffs" of the real drivers as far as I remember.

Благодаря тебе, я нашёл много очень хороших игр на Нинтендо 64 и не наткнулся на убожество. Спасибо тебе за это! Молодец!
What do you plan on doing once you’ve reviewed every N64 game?
Going to: Super Nintendo, NES, Gameboy, Game Cube div. Sega Systems. There'will be a lot to do. 😀
Bauernkind 85 ah. I assumed he’d never do that since he is an N64 channel at heart. But I guess he did stream on the Xbox a couple times......
Haha there’s still plenty N64 stuff and related things to cover. Not making any plans to do otherwise yet
To be fair he did stream Turok on Xbox, which is an N64 port. But it would make sense to do it like SNESdrunk, and do other systems as well.
Do them all again, but backwards
