I refer to James Gurney's Color and Light all the time! Wonderful reference and so digestible.

James Gurney is fantastic and I think someone to look up to not just for beginning artists and illustrators but damn near any level. Color and Light has probably been referenced more times than any other book I've seen in these sort of Top Tier lists of books artists should own. Also, big props for him just being a really cool down to earth weirdo, if you haven't seen his TH-cam channel it absolutely charming and instructional.
Cheers to you as well, just came across your channel and I'm really digging it.

Do you have any books or videos of his?

@@GabrielStocktonWatercolors I don't have any of his instructional videos, yet anyway, but aside from several of the Dinotopia books I have his Color and Light book as well as Imaginative Realism. Both superb. From this list of yours I also have En Plein Air: Light & Color by Iain Stewart but I still need to get to that one. I have a tendency to just buy art books faster than I can get through them. Haha!

One that I found to be a big help was WAYS WITH WATERCOLOR by Ted Kautzky. He starts painting with two colors and with each new lesson adds a color. And his paintings are beautiful

The Guide Artists books have books by the best painters and sculptors in the world. They release one to two books per month. It's really a luxury nowadays!

Very awesome review! ENtertaining as well as good information! I have two of them for sure, will have to dig to make sure I don't have any others. At the moment am studying out of Tony Couch's Key's to Successful Painting! I really like this book as well. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this book review!

@@GabrielStocktonWatercolors Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Carlson's Guide to Landscape painting. I am a watercolorist but since retiring I have been experimenting with Acrylic and Aqua Oils. I still prefer watercolor though. I can't seem to get the look I want in any other medium

@@naomiruthie I especially like both of those books have you try painting with gouache and what paint brushes do you like to use with your watercolors?

@@GabrielStocktonWatercolors I do also paint with Gouache. I am a purist though so I don't add it to my watercolors. I paint specifically with Gouache and specifically with watercolor. I use mostly round brushes. pure Kolinsky sable brushes. I recently purchased a couple of synthetic round brushes by Masters Touch and found them to be okay. I am intrigued by the brushes you use and would love to try them. I'm not sure where to find them and are they cost effective. Retired budget ATM.
