Documenting the first time we started up our twin cylinder Lister Diesel Engine after completely refurbishing it.
This is the first time we started it. We are using recycled vegetable oil for fuel. We had planned on using two of these engines to power an electric generator for an entire village. We obviously don't know what we're doing, but we're having fun.

Yes start it on one. Cracking the injector line means just loosen it 1/8 to 1/4 turn, you can still see the bubbles work their way out around the nut. And you can tell it's bled well enough to get started when you hear the injectors "burp" as you crank it.(injector lines tight)
Looks brand new to me too as all of the manufacturers stickers & labels still look brand new as does the whole engine as lister petter still make this twin engine as i have recently bought one for my narrow boat i am refurbishing the only exception with my engine is that is has a heat exchanger to cool the engine via canal water thats extracted pumped around the engine & then spat out into the canal at the rear of the boat as narrow boats have a dry exhaust to avoid polluting the water.

Friend of mine acquired a twin lister hand cranked and tried to start it for three weeks no joy. Called me for advice. Couldn't make him understand the proper way to start it so the next day I went to his house to find out what was wrong. He had hooked up an external fuel tank that as it should be was gravity feed only problem the bottom of the tank was two feet below the fuel filter raised the fuel tank 36 inches hooked up the feed line to the filter no fuel he never turned the fuel cock on the big tank on after purging the air from the injection system he and four of his buddies we go it now and took over Hank cranking 30 minutes later they were exhausted and said it was a piece of junk. I grabbed the crank turned both compression lowering valves all the way out made sure both decompression lifters were in the decompression position then cranked it up and one of his friends released both decompression lifters and she quickly came to a halt.
This time I told all of them I am going to start it by myself anybody tries to help I'm getting in my truck and going home. This time they didn't touch anything and the look on their faces when I fired it up easily on one cylinder was priceless then one of them jumped to close the easy start valves and I waked him on the hand with a two foot three inch diameter stick and yelled at him asking did I say you could touch it yet. Then proceeded to kick in the second cylinder and after it had run for three minutes then screwed the valves in and after 20 minutes shut it down and quietly showed him the correct way to start a lister Diesel engine. He has since installed a CS starter system with a generator sized for the engine and is amazed it starts without anything other than turning on a light in the house. His wife loves it as she no longer has to deal with a gasoline generator which is much noisier that the Lister twin. He bought it used and it hadn't run in over 30 years so he had a chap who knows liters completely rebuilt it and he came up with the CS generator system for it. The rebuilder told him it needed two 12 volt batteries in series but his reasoning was I can start it by hand I don't need no batteries. After he saw it start and stop with the proper batteries installed he admitted he should have listened. It has been providing him with power for over a year with nothing other than regular maintenance.
Watching these guy's trying to start her reminded me of his buddies trying to help me start it when they didn't have a clue what they were doing.

good video, the way to start it, do like the submarine engines did, open the de-compressors, then crank, give some momentum to the flywheel, then add fuel, and close the valves.

What do you mean by refurbish? I looks like mine did straight out of the crate none of the paint has been cracked. I LOVE the twins they remind me of an old John Deere "Johny Popper" :)

Where can I buy one of these?
Pushrods, rocker assy, valve tappets all look dry. No oil pumping up to the top end for lubrication. Something is not right. You should not have to hand oil the valve rockers, tappets, pushrods every 5 min.
Was the music added to replace the swearing and cursing during the 1st half of the clip?
That was thick diesel you were pouring into the tank or are you running it on oil?

Nice video but it's a pitty it's been spoiled with the loud noisy music that was added as you are unable to hear the engine running shame the issues still not resolved oh well..

I am sorry but I doubt any person in this video has a clue what they are doing and the music was a real killer. They have no idea how to start it; forgot to oil the valve gear first; stop it by using the decompression levers; they all think they are cool with their headbands; Hell we used to start a single cylinder Fowler bulldozer first time every time with a 200wt flywheel.

Put couple of oil drops in handle pin to slip when engine starts, otherwise a small mistake causes your life, your starting method completely wrong, it takes some time and practice. Check indian farmers video about starting engine in farm.

Hum, wondering how to crank that engine went at 70 + yrs old with no help around, electric start engine is looking better and better. This engine is youngmans game. This engine will give an old timer a heart attack whom will be found dead weeks later in his generator shack.
John S It only causes heart attacks when you try to start it like these clowns. Check some other videos. Not so difficult.
