    No, solar and AC, and various other mixes of inputs will NOT work to sum the inputs. The controller picks one. The 1500X manual explains that, and explains how the controller picks which one it will use. You’re also doing other things that are explained in the manuals of those products. It seriously is an excellent resource. When you plug in from the top, it switches to using that. You need to be a heck of a LOT more patient trying things-in particular, changing inputs. It takes up to several minutes for the controller to adjust and adapt to input changes. You mentioned that you “found out” some things. Most of those are explained in the manual.

      I generally don't read manuals but ... have now. You are correct although it says it should chose the higher of the inputs when using more than one and it choses the lower (solar) over AC for some reason. Anyway, I came from a Goal Zero 1250 which took both inputs no problem so it's a bit surprising the 1500X can't do that. So, the things I "found out" like it not working below 32 are in the manual but are a big difference from the 1250 which worked fine in temps below 32. Hopefully this video will be helpful to people who watch videos and don't read manuals like me. :-) Thanks.

      I read the manual before using my 1500x. Used an AC charge flawlessly. Charged computer 4 times, ran a vacuum cleaner for 5 minutes and a reciprocating saw for about 20 minutes. Still had 67% power left. Large panels are needed to charge via solar.

    Glad I found your video. I had similar issues with the 1500x after upgrading from a 1000. The AC charging port on the front did not respond after a couple of attempts and waiting for several minutes (no solar connected during this test). After the 3rd try it started working… ok, I can live with that. My biggest issue is from this test: connected a Dometic CX35 cooler and after 24 hrs with the cooler being OFF, the 1500x dropped 3%. Same test with the 1000 resulted in 0% loss… that I cannot live with. The 1500x shows an output of 0.1amps while the 1000 shows 0, both cases with the Dometic OFF. Will contact GoalZero for answers but it is pointing to a return item and reviving the 1000.

    I just got 1500x and straight swapped it with my 1000 lithium, you have to use the 1000 lithium's 115v charger however, as stated in literature, and I also had the mppt controller on the 1000 and moved it over as well and it worked just as it did before(no buzzing as I read somewhere on older mppt's). Good to see these struggles online, and others who've replied similar to myself now the same solution works. Sure I only get the 60w 115v input when on shore power but it does sum with the solar input when you have both feeds. Hope that helps. I got what I wanted, same size package but an extra 45 amp hours. With the 360w of the 3 panels on my trailer I can run domestic cfx-75 on freezer both sides in summer temps and catch up every day no prob, the freezer side of the domestic is the big power draw. In winter ice fishing both sides on fridge it's nothing. All the other electrical demands and things we charge, lights etc. are also nothing. Will see how the new Webasto 2kw heater will be for draw but no worries based on specs now as that will primarily run winter when the fridge doesn't work very hard anyway.

    I had a GZ 1400 in my camper van and was able to stack multiple charge sources without an issue. This was great since I could get power from solar, the 12v outlet on the van while driving, and/or shore power at the campground. Never an issue. Now with my new 1500x I have the same complaint as you. Talking with GZ the work around they recommended is adding the GZ MPPT solar optimization controller so can charge from 2 sources independently. I had one left over from when had the 1400 so installed it. I can now charge from multiple sources at the same time again and the watts are additive. HOWEVER whenever charging
    using the add on MPPT I get an annoying buzzing sound coming from the MPPT. Sooooo - calling GZ again.

    • @MTBIKEXC
      @MTBIKEXC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geeezzzz... I had one of those MPPT solar optimization controllers for my 1000 which didn't have a regulated 12V output and wouldn't run my fridge below 50% battery charge but I returned BOTH the 1000 and the MPPT module. Wish I had kept it. Such a step backwards from my 1250. Wonder what the hell happened to the company to blow it with the 1000/1400's and now the X-series.

    • @aph6362
      @aph6362 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just got off the phone with GZ. Said that the buzzing issue is a firmware comparability issue because my MPPT controller has an older version firmware. They are exchanging my old MPPT controller with a new one that has the updated firmware. Should have it next week. If it works exactly the same way it is currently working without the buzzing then I will be very happy. Will update once I have everything in place and tested.

I use the built in MPPT controller for the solar connection and use the new controller for charging when the van is running. The input watts is additive when driving during daylight hours. So bottom line is it seems to work. Still disappointing that Have to jump through hoops to get the 1500X to work properly as it should work this way out of the box. I have a 1500X too. The first one had problems with both USB Ports. After exchange the USB where working and the solar main connector was working well. But if I used the main and the small (circle connector) together I had first maximum watts (260W) of charging and after a vew seconds around half watts (105W) and then zero. After some seconds maximum Watts again and then half and so on. Both ports had exact the same solar panel 180W and 35V. Firmware was v1.21. Today I made an upgrade to v1.30 - now I have all problems you had - the main solar port isn't working anymore correct.

    Curious about the solar panels you have plugged in. How many volts are actually coming through the Anderson plugs, and how many watts are your solar panels?
    I have the Yeti 1000 Lithium for the past 3 years. It will not accept more than 360W total coming in. If I try and push it above that, it will go to zero and then bounce back up and then down to zero again.
    I wonder if the voltage is somehow exceeding the limits of the box. You mentioned charging in the cold... So during the time of your testing December, it's probably cold where you are. Solar panels can actually exceed their rated voltage when it's really cold outside. So that leads me to believe that there is some excess voltage going in. Maybe. 😁
    On my channel I show how to connect the Goal Zero to the alternator of my Sprinter using a Victron Orion DC-DC charger to charge my Yeti while I drive. Works awesome. From my tests, if I exceed the 360w coming in from the Victron by also trying to charge with the power brick, my Yeti will go down to 0 then jump up again, then go back to 0.

    I had my Goal Zero 500X for less than 3 months and it stopped working. Goal Zero won’t honor their warranty either. Several years ago, they made good products but has really dropped in quality. I’ll never buy another Goal Zero product again.

    Goal Zero 1250 and 1500 are not the same ! on goal zero 1500 you don't get a read on the display under 20w !

    Not ideal, but you could consider/try a solution like this and see if that helps:

      I fully agree, it shouldn't be necessary, but the Victron products are very good (I have personal experience with them in stationary setups) and it may improve your setup even further (enable higher PV voltage, better MPPT performance and a lot of custom settings).
      There may even be room inside the top lid (expansion module bay) for one of the smaller Victrons, the Smartsolar 75/15 (75V PV - 15A max) I have in front of me is about 38mm high (the model shown in the video is quite a bit higher).
      I am considering buying a 1500X as well (I currently own a smaller/older Yeti and the Sherpa models), and I have followed your videos with interest to see if you found a solution. I even compared the Yeti 1250 and 1500X manuals. The 1250 manual does says you can combine solar and AC charging, while the 1500X manual says AC and Solar cannot be combined, and you can only charge on multiple ports if the source has the same voltage. So a bit of a downgrade there..

    Well that sucks! I can't believe they pull weird stuff like that... only one input that's unacceptable.
    I have not tried both soalr + AC on my 3000x yet,
    I use the tank module, it charge 500-750w while driving witch is awesome.
    The X has mppt and accept up to 50v witch definitely helps with big solar panels depending on your needs.

    this ridiculous but it doesn't work this scenario on this model. Yeti always take charging from inlet that has a higher voltage, even it has a none wattage. As can you see this is another nonsens in generation X. Next fu...ed thing is that battery is charge to full and than discharge to for example to 95% then charge, discharge, charge forever, even if you have power delivery in to inlet. I wait for next gen of yeti.

      You know, with all my calls to Goal Zero, they never once offered to replace it. And I really wasn't sure if it was my panel, cable or really a bad unit. I felt kinda bad bringing it back to REI too. Wish Goal Zero had offered to fix or replace it but they never did.
