I’m getting chickens for the first time in my life and by watching hundreds of videos learning what they need as babies and when to put them in a coupe and I can’t help but but to think where did the time go and if I was raised like this as a child I would so much better off , just wanted to say thank you again for your teaching videos they mean the world to me and my 4 sons and my granddaughter❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Great episode James. I have bird houses near my garden and the birds take care of hornworms, cabbage worms and other pests. If you do this make sure that you have a bird bath so that the birds get plenty of water and don't attack your plants for water. Especially when it's particularly dry out.

I have 5x hens in a small city garden. Fences allow them to be around the plants.

What a great solution! Well done. Maybe you should focus all your annual plants in the new food forest for a year and let the chickens stay in the 7 year for a year. That will ensure you break the curculio cycle real good. Then after that start planting more annuals there again

A method we employ in our food forest is to place Rocks around the base of various perennials and annuals the chickens gravitate towards. Not only do rocks physically block the chickens from scratching but it also can act as a thermal mass, regulating temperature in the daily cycle and also provide habitat for beneficial critters.

I started googling about the CURCULIO weevil... Was compelled to help and learn.
In an old scientific paper, a gentleman said that when shaking a fruit tree, he caught 5 curculio... Then, when striking a cut branch stub with a Hammer, he collected 200 from the same tree. (make a branch stub at least an inch thick)
Chickens and hogs, together appeared to be quite effective for larva removal.
-But, you are picking up fruit regularly. Same thing as hogs in a larger orchard.
* I wonder if a heavy (chicken scratch-proof) pro weed fabric would help chickens get all larva and pupa... Weed fabric under the top inch or so of chips...?
Maybe try One or two trees, next season... mainly closest to the trunk.
(I like the sticky tanglefoot trunk idea, too)

Hey James, I commented on one of your other videos about using fruit tree Grease. Not sure if you saw that comment but maybe it could be helpful to grease the base of your trees to prevent this Curculio bug.

Yo man, great video! I had an idea could it be beneficial to rake the wood chips away from the fruit tree aprior to allowing the chickens to work around it so that you avoid the mixing of chips and topsoil? Let me know if you have tried this and observed any difference. Have a great weekend!

I used to have chickens but once my new neighbors moved in next door they forced me to get rid of them just because they don't agree with people owning chickens and they made a big deal about it. I miss my chicken's and once I move I hope to own chickens again.
I wish I could borrow some chickens for a few weekends. I am not able to keep them every day.

We lost so much of this common sense knowledge, the last 60 years or so. As a homesteader in the 70's, I let my chickens run loose on the homestead a few hours a day, in the afternoon...when I was outside to keep an eye on them. They did a fantastic job of keeping the fly population down. One time I boobooed......they knew the sweet corn was ripe, before I did, and had to shoo them back to their pen in a hurry. I'm glad to see people like yourself , starting to embrace the whole eco system of a properly managed property, full of abundance.
Ok so I’m just on the beginning stages of this adventure. I put wood chips down in the spring in part of my backyard. The last two weeks I’ve been putting more chips down in the rest of the yard so hopefully I can plant in the spring. Ok so now the problem.... I have never ever seen so many crickets in my yard in my life 😩. I really don’t like crickets. I don’t want to use chemicals. I mean when I say a lot I can’t even put into words how many😩. Help
Crickets wont hurt your garden dont use chemicals. There is nothing scary about them they wont hurt you.

I want chickens but we can't because we live in a HOA controlled area.
Daniel Fisch- I convinced a friend to challenge his HOA regs against vegetable gardens in the back yard. He spoke to a few neighbors, forced a vote on the issue and won.
I'm sure chickens are a harder sell, but your pitch could include a 2 or 4 chicken limit with no roosters, and you might be able to convince enough of your neighbors.
I believe there are even pro-backyard chicken groups who have how-to manuals to help people challenge city and HOA regulations.
Just like all politics, HOAs are usually run by a vocal minority, but they can be challenged.
It doesn't hurt to try.
Allan Turpin I’ll have to try this. I want chickens for many reasons including fertilizing my food forest, scorpion population control and the obvious reasons.
Daniel Fisch- Cool. I don't think HOA procedures are complicated, you just have to look them up ahead of time so you know how to work it.
If you get your immediate surrounding neighbors (who would be most likely to be affected by noise, which is minimal, or smell, which isn't a problem for well cared for chickens) to agree ahead of time to a trial run, other people objecting will look like busybodies.
If you do get the HOA to agree, be sure to bring your neighbors some eggs and veggies on occasion (but don't promise that ahead of time or it's akin to bribery).

Ok I also live in NJ and do the BTE garden also I forget the bugs name but the bug looks like a lady bug and are yellow or orange and are related to the stink bug. Well they wipe out my garden or most of it by mid august. Mostly my fault though since my garden runs itself most years I wasnt paying attention and when I finally notice well the battle was over and I lost.
Actually looks more like a cotton boll weevil. I looked it up. The boll weevil does the same thing in it's reproductive cycle.
The bug that got was the Harlequin Bug

I basically watch videos like this for the birds, worms, black soldier fly larvae, or whatever. Things I can’t see here in the city.
For instance, that whole cow “mob, mow, move on” section could’ve been filmed with the chickens on screen and him doing the voiceover.
